  • As a notion of environment protection changes throughout the world, construction engineers, as part of the effort to resolve environmental problems, have been actively doing research on environmental friendly porous concrete using large and non-uniform aggregate. Porous Concrete enables water and air to pass through a firmly hardened material and allows required nutrients to reach roots of plants. The purpose of this study is to analyze planting ability when the change of aggregate gradation and void ratio. The results of an experiment from the planting ability of the porous concrete to its influence on the compressive strength are reported in this paper. As a result of the experiment, the compressive strength is higher when the gradation of aggregate is smaller, and it also goes higher when the void ratio gets smaller The planting ability of porous concrete is decided by the germination and the grass length of Indigofera pseudo-tinctoria(IPT). The length of IPT is longer when the gradation of aggregate is greater and the void ratio gets smaller.

  • These experiments were intended to obtain basic information to develop an effective method of seed storage, using local varieties of seeds of 13 different crops in Korea. The germination ratio and velocity were investigated at one month intervals with seeds stored in six different temperatures($-20^{\circ}C$, $-7^{\circ}C$, $7^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$) for six months. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. Final germination ratio of the seeds of different crops were not influenced by the storage temperatures when dry seeds were used, but moist seeds were affected by storage temperatures. 2. The germination velocity and growth of the primary root of the seeds were remarkably influenced by storage temperatures. Viability of the seeds maintained in freezing temperatures ($-20^{\circ}C$, $-7^{\circ}C$) and in low temperature ($7^{\circ}C$) were higher than that of the seeds stored in high temperature ($30^{\circ}C$).

  • In order to develop a novel food utilization of germinated brown rice, physicochemical properties of germinated brown rice and its extrudates were investigated. The physical characteristics, the paste viscosity, and the anti-oxidation activity were analyzed. Brown rice was soaked for 10 hr and germinated for 24 and 48 hr at $30^{\circ}C$. Extrusion conditions of brown rice and germinated brown rice were barrel temperature at 100 and $120^{\circ}C$ and moisture content at 20%. The expansion ratio increased with the increase in germination time. It increased at barrel temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, and decreased at $120^{\circ}C$. The bulk density showed negative corporations with the expansion ratio. The paste viscosity of germinated brown rice was decreased with the increase in the germination time. However the paste viscosity of extrudates was lower as barrel temperature increased. Content of polyphenolic compound in extrudates was increased by increasing germination time and barrel temperature.

  • To determine an optimum harvest time for chinese milk vetch (CMV) seed production, the seeds were harvested at 4 times, according to 25, 30, 35, and 40 day after flowering (DAF), in Miryang, southern part of Korea. CMV plants were manually harvested at each time and seed threshing was done by rice threshing machine. Seed yield, 1,000-seed weight, germinability, and hard coat ratio were investigated. Seed yield was the highest, 53.9 kg/300 kg by dry weight (DW) of CMV plant, at 35 DAF. 1,000-seed weight increased according to seed harvest time from 25 DAF to 40 DAF when it was 3.10 g. The germination ratios of seeds harvested at 4 times were not significantly different when the seeds stored until August 1. In case of long period of CMV seeds stored, the seeds harvested later showed higher germination rate. On the other hand, because the hard coat ratio causing germination inhibition was declined with an increase of storage period, it was higher in the seeds harvested later. There was no difference among the seeds harvested at 4 times at October 1. In conclusion, it was presumed that an optimum harvest time for CMV seed production should be at 35 DAF considering seed yield, weight and germinability.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of minimum night temperature in the PE house on growth of seedlings of Pinus densiflora and Betula platyphylla in winter season. The experiment was performed with three minimum night temperature regimes,5~8$^{\circ}C$, 10~13$^{\circ}C$ and 15~18$^{\circ}C$. The temperature regimes were maintained for 8 weeks (to April 6) after germination peak, and then were broken by increasing natural temperature. The temperature did not affect the germination rate but delayed the germination by 10 days. Height, root collar diameter growth, and dry weight of two species were reduced by relatively low night temperature. The reduction was more obvious in the dry weight of above the ground measured at 8 weeks after germination. The seedlings grown for 8 weeks at 5~8$^{\circ}C$ showed the lowest T/R ratio. It was also observed that the height growth response in Betula platyphylla seedlings to relatively low temperature was more sensitive than Pinus densiflora.

  • Lilium lancifolium, which is one of the Korean native lilies, possesses several useful genetic characteristics such as growth vigor, bulbil formation and resistance to Fusarium. Hybridization was performed to insert useful traits of Asiatic hybrid "Dreamland" as the male parent with upward direction and dark brown spotless on the petal into L. lancifolium as the female parent. The rate of pollen germination of L. lancifolium and "Dreamland" were 30% and 60%, respectively. The pollen germination ratio of $F_1$ progenies at flowering date was 25-57%, which is between the parents'pollen germination ratio. The individual flowering time was between 113 days and 131 days after planting. Of 99% of all plants, the leaf shape index was more than five, which means that the leaf shape of $F_1$ plants is more influenced by female than male parent. The flower color was separated into four types. 51.5% of the progenies showed orange and 44.2% showed light orange, respectively. The colors seemed to be highly influenced by female parents. Mixed colors of parents, orange yellow and light yellow orange, were 3.1%, 1.2%, respectively. Flowering directions were segregated by three different ways, upside, side, and downside. Side direction, which is medium type between female and male parent, was 73%. All progenies showed lots of spot on petals except one offspring. The percentage of bulbil formation on leaf axil was 49.4%. Among those, the maximum number of bulbil formation was 25. The mean number of bulbil formation per plant was five.

  • To evaluate performance of the experimental pick-up type pulse crop harvester for harvesting sprout bean, its pick-up and discharging grain loss ratios, grain quality such as whole grain ratio, damaged grain ratio, unthreshed grain, and foreign material ratio in grain tank, germination rate of threshed grain, and theoretical field capacity of the harvester were analyzed according to engine speeds of 2000, 2400 and 2800 rpm and harvesting speeds of 0.6, 1.0 and 1.4 m/s. It is considered that the harvester showed optimum performance at the engine speed of 2800 rpm and the harvesting speed of 1.0 m/s, and then average pick-up grain loss ratio of 2.7%, discharging grain loss ratio of 0.5%, whole grain ratio of 99.3%, damaged grain ratio of 0.2%, unthreshed grain ratio of 0.0%, foreign material ratio of 0.2%, and germination rate at 8 days after seeding of 72.8% were shown. It is considered that the harvester has lower grain loss and higher grain quality than the imported bean combines. And also as it could harvest 3 rows of cut and dried sprout bean crop width of which was about 2 m, its effective field capacity was estimated for about 50 a/h.

  • This study was performed to investigate the seed morphological characteristics and dormancy type of Adenophora triphylla var. japonica Hara that high valued medicinal crop and to select the disinfectants and light quality for germination rate improvement. The seed disinfection was carried out using distilled water (control), NaClO 4%, $H_2O_2$ 4%, and benomyl $500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. The light quality treatments were set to dark condition (control I), fluorescent lamp (control II), LEDs [red, blue, green, and combined RB LEDs (red:blue = 8:2, 6:4, 4:6, 2:8)] with a photoperiod of 12/12 (light/dark) and light intensity $150{\pm}10{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ photosynthetic photon flux density. Although the Adenophora triphylla var. japonica Hara seed was an underdeveloped embryo (E) and seed (S) with an embryo (E):seed (S) ratio of 0.4, it is germinated within 30 days, and seed moisture saturation was reached within 6 hours after immersion. After seed disinfection, the mold incidence rate was significantly inhibited, and the final germination rate was the highest at 87% in the benomyl seed disinfection. The final germination rate was the highest at 92% in the red light, and the mean daily germination was the lowest in the R2B8. Therefore, there is almost no dormancy in the Adenophora triphylla var. japonica Hara seed, and benomyl seed disinfectant and red light were effective in the improvement of germination rate. So it is considered to the high value of use for medicinal crop Adenophora triphylla var. japonica Hara cultivation.

  • We investigated a suitable method for in vitro germination of spores, propagation of prothalli, and the formation of sporophytes in the fern Dryopteris nipponensis Koidz. Spore germination rate was relatively high regardless of culture medium. Prothallus development was faster in Knop medium than in Murashige and Skoog (MS) media. Prothalli used in all experiments were obtained from germinated spores, and were cultivated in different concentrations of media components. The active formation of sexual organs such as antheridium made 1MS medium suitable for prothallus propagation, although there was a lower propagation ratio compared to Knop medium. Growth and morphogenesis of prothalli were most effective on 1MS medium containing 2% sucrose, and 60 mM of total nitrogen source with 20:40 mM ratio of $NH_4{^+}:NO_3{^-}$. To select a suitable soil composition for sporophyte formation, ground prothalli were cultivated on single and mixed soils using bed soil, peat moss, perlite, and decomposed granite for 14 weeks. Bed soil promoted sporophyte formation and growth regardless of single or mixed use. In particular, a mixture of bed soil and decomposed granite in a 2:1 ratio (v:v) led to accelerated sporophyte formation ($0.83/cm^2$).

  • This study was conducted to analyze ripening characteristics of the seed according to days after flowering. The seeds were harvested on land located in the Department of Herbal Crop Research in Rural Development Administration in 2019. Seed weight and germination rate were investigated according to days after flowering and the embryo:seed ratio was examined during the fruiting process. The results showed that the weight increased significantly by the days after flowering at each inflorescence and the seed began to germinate at different time. Further, given the embryo:seed ratio, we found that embryo continue to grow in the seed. Because Angelica acutiloba (Siebold & Zucc.) Kitagawa bloom in various inflorescences, the stage of embryonic development of the seeds can affect the germination of seed. Based on our results, the key seed harvest period for good seed is 50 to 70 days after flowering.
