  • The 1986 AASHTO Guide for the Design of Pavement Structures introduced the resilient modulus as a definitive material property to characterize roadbed soil. Although the incorporation of resilient modulus represents a significant acvance in pavement design practice, the test procedure for resilient modulus is complicated and time-consuming. Therefore, it is necessary to develop data base of resilient modulus for the soils frequently encountered; and to develop the reliable correlations between resilient properties and parameters from simple routine tests, In this study, resilient modulus tests were performed on five cohesive soils sampled from in-service subgrades. The stress at 1 percent axial strain in unconfined compression test(su1.0%) was found as a good indicator of the resilient modulus, and unique relationship between Mg and Su1.0% was obtained. A simple chart to estimate the resilient modulus at different levels of confining stress and deviator stress was also developed.

  • There are several types of foundations for light-weight structures, such as low story buildings, on soft clay deposits. Those foundations, such as piled raft, compensated foundation, mat foundation, floating foundation are commonly used rather then end-bearing piles to get more benefits on the construction and cost savings. In this study, settlement behaviors are computed and compared for several types of foundations on soft clay deposits. Also, theoretical expressions of parameters for piled raft system were provided with co-relations for design purposes. The predictions of settlements of piled rafts foundation are proposed based on the pile dimensions and design loads. From this study, the piled raft foundations is more benefits for reducing the settlement of clay deposits, and it is found that the piled raft system is applicable and effective on thick clay deposits, and that differential settlements of the foundation should be managed by designing the configuration of pile lengths.

  • In recent years, Natm has been successfully applied to difficult ground conditions with the use of soil-perservention methods which promote face stability and restrict excessive ground movement. When the tunnle excavation od made through difficult ground like highly weathered rock, the umbrella arch method is often adopted which pre-reinforceas tunnel crown periphery using a stiff shell-shaped structure. The umbrella arch method was originally developed in Itali, and has recently been confirmed its effectiveness in Korea as well. However, no in depth study on the umbrella arch method has been conducted ans as a result no rational analysis/design method is available at present. Therefore this study was undertaken with the aim of identifying the basic reinforcing mechanism and satablishing both qualitative and quantiative relationships between various design parameters and ground movements.

  • A wide range of problems geotechnical engineering have been analyzed by using the finite element method. In order to establish confidence in a numerical procedure, it is desirable that numerical solution be verified against field or laboratory observations, or both, and in order to aid the user in applying the method to practical problems, it is necessary to examine effects of various parameters that influence the behavior of engineering structures. Often it can be profitable to translate numerical solutions in formats that can be used readily for design analysis. The allowable bearing capacity of concrete piles is mainly governed by settlement rather than by strength of soil. Therefore, the load-displacement behavior of piles should be well understood at the design stage. This paper deals with some of these goals by considering the problem of load-displacement behavior of axially-loaded pile foundations.

  • In order to control differential settlement and to secure the safety of super structure on a high rock embankment the designed static compaction is changed with dynamic compaction and piled raft method. The parameters for dynamic compaction design are obtained from a pilot test. In addition, numerical analyses are also carried out to figure out the length and quantity of piled raft that can restraint the differential settlement within allowance range.

  • While the pavement design is based on mechanical property such dynamic elastic modulus, the quality of highway subgrade during construction is controled by the optimum moisture content(OMC) and maximum dry density(${\gamma}$$\_$dmax/). However, since the quality control based on the OMC and maximum dry density does not consider the mechanical characteristics, there is a conceptional gap between design and PMS(pavement management system). Therefore, it is necessary to develope a new qualify control system using mechanical property for highway construction in more rational way. To achieve this goal, it is planned to perform various laboratory tests to collect mechanical properties of subgrade soil samples from several highway construction sites and to propose the relationship between dry unit weight (or OMC) and mechanical parameters. In this paper, the experimental data so far obtained are presented and analyzed. In addition, further research plan is presented and discussed.

  • Recent earthquake events revealed that severe seismic damages were concentrated mostly at sites composed of soil sediments rather than firm rock. This indicates that the site effects inducing the amplification of earthquake ground motion are associated mainly with the spatial distribution and dynamic properties of the soils overlying bedrock. In this study, an integrated GIS-based information system for geotechnical data was constructed to establish a regional counterplan against ground motions at a representative metropolitan area, Seoul, in Korea. To implement the GIS-based geotechnical information system for the Seoul area, existing geotechnical investigation data were collected in and around the study area and additionally a walkover site survey was carried out to acquire surface geo-knowledge data. For practical application of the geotechnical information system used to estimate the site effects at the area of interest, seismic zoning maps of geotechnical earthquake engineering parameters, such as the depth to bedrock and the site period, were created and presented as regional synthetic strategy for earthquake-induced hazards prediction. In addition, seismic zonation of site classification was also performed to determine the site amplification coefficients for seismic design at any site and administrative sub-unit in the Seoul area. Based on the case study on seismic zonations for Seoul, it was verified that the GIS-based geotechnical information system was very useful for the regional prediction of seismic hazards and also the decision support for seismic hazard mitigation particularly at the metropolitan area.

  • Geology conditions are crucial in decision-making during the planning and design phase of a tunnel project. Estimation of the geology conditions of road tunnels is subject to significant uncertainties. In this work, the effectiveness of a novel regression method in estimating geological or geotechnical parameters of road tunnel projects was explored. This method, called Gaussian process regression (GPR), formulates the learning of the regressor within a Bayesian framework. The GPR model was trained with data of old tunnel projects. To verify its feasibility, the GPR technique was applied to a road tunnel to predict the state of three geological/geomechanical parameters of Rock Mass Rating (RMR), Rock Structure Rating (RSR) and Q-value. Finally, in order to validate the GPR approach, the forecasted results were compared to the field-observed results. From this comparison, it was concluded that, the GPR is presented very good predictions. The R-squared values between the predicted results of the GPR vs. field-observed results for the RMR, RSR and Q-value were obtained equal to 0.8581, 0.8148 and 0.8788, respectively.

  • The stability condition of rock slopes is greatly affected by the geometry and strength parameters of discontinuities in the rock masses. Rock slopes Involving movement of rock blocks on discontinuities are failed by one or combination of the three basic failure modes-plane, wedge, and toppling. In rock mechanics, practically all the parameters such as the joint set characteristics, the rock strength properties, and the loading conditions are always subject to a degree of uncertainty. Therefore, a reasonable assessment of the rock slope stability has to include the excavation of the multi-failure modes, the consideration of uncertainties of discontinuity characteristics, and the decision on stabilization measures with favorable cost conditions. This study was performed to provide a new numerical model of the deterministic analysis, reliability analysis, and reliability-based optimization for rock slope stability. The sensitivity analysis was carried out to verify proposed method and developed program; the parameters needed for sensitivity analysis are design variables, the variability of discontinuity properties (orientation and strength of discontinuities), the loading conditions, and rock slope geometry properties. The design variables to be optimized by the reliability-based optimization include the cutting angle, the support pressure, and the slope direction. The variability in orientations and friction angle of discontinuities, which can not be considered in the deterministic analysis, has a greatly influenced on the rock slope stability. The stability of rock slopes considering three basic failure modes is more influenced by the selection of slope direction than any other design variables. When either plane or wedge failure is dominant, the support system is more useful than the excavation as a stabilization method. However, the excavation method is more suitable when toppling failure is dominant. The case study shows that the developed reliability-based optimization model can reasonably assess the stability of rock slopes and reduce the construction cost.

  • The vertical loads of buried Hume pipes were calculated using the finite element method, in which the hyperbolic soil model, the nonlinear hysteretic stress path model and soil-structure interface model were used. The obtained results were compared and discussed with those from the classic methods such as Marston-Spangler's theory and so on. The effects of excavation width and depth to the top of pipe along with soil parameters and type of excavation, which have not been included in the classic methods, were investigated. In addition, a calculation method of the vertical load for buried Hume pipes was proposed and it is presumed to be easily applied in the practical fields.
