  • Gas Metal Arc Welding is a widely used process in Industry due to its high productivity and potential to automation. The present study investigates the effects of the welding speed, arc voltage, welding current and shielding gas on the bead geometry for a low-carbon steel. The Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is used to choose an experimental design and perform test runs accordingly in order to produce mathematical models predicting the geometry, the hardness and the heat input of the bead as functions of the welding parameters. The direct and interaction effects of the four welding parameters are represented graphically and allow to determine an optimum set of welding parameters.

  • This paper presents a method for determining machining parameters in 3-dimentional electrical discharge machining(EDM). The parameters are the peak value of currents, the pulse-on time, and the pulse-off time. It is known that they influence the performance of EDM more than the other else. The parameters are determined from the discharge area between a tool electrode and a work piece. The discharge area is directly influenced by the geometry of a tool surface and the tool discharge position. The discharge area on a tool discharge position is calculated from intersection curves between the tool surface and a horizontal plane. The grid search method is applied to determine the intersection curves. An example is introduced to show that the machining parameters are obtained from the surface geometry of a tool electrode.

  • The tool geometry parameters and cutting process have complex relationships. Until now, various cutting test were needed to acquire optimal design of end mill for the purpose of high speed machining, due to the insufficient knowledge about cutting process. In high speed machining. Using various tools with different geometry, relationships between tool geometry parameter (rake angle, clearance angle, length of cutter) and cutting process (cutting force, surface accuracy, surface roughness) have been studied. Acquired data can be used to design optimal tool for high speed machining and developed tool geometry design S/W.

  • The mecanum wheel was originaly developed in sweden to realize the omni-directional motion of the cart. The circumference of each wheel is lined with rollers set at 45 degrees relative to the main wheel. This paper proves that the roller of the mecanum wheel shapes the ellipsoid, derives the kinematic relationships between the parameters of the wheel and rollers, and proposes the procedure to determine the parameters of the wheel. The result was implemented into the computer program for the design of the mecanum wheel.

  • Purpose: This paper aims to analyse the composition system of architectural elements including shape, kinetic and material elements of kinetic facades and establish the design parameter system as a common conceptual and practical knowledge sharing platform with mechanical and electrical experts. Method: This research has been conducted in a three steps. At first, 120 cases of external shading devices are analyzed and their classification criteria have been established. Secondly geometric, kinetic and material elements are categorized in a common kinetic facade coordinates system considering environmental effects and operation method, and the applicability of combination of each element are tested. Lastly core design parameters for each element have been established in a common office building installation coordinate. Result: Geometry elements are categorized into seven geometric shapes and kinetic elements is categorized into basic linear and rotational motion and combinational folding and rolling motion. The combined set of parameters for three elements composes the whole design parameters for architectural elements of kinetic façade. Design parameters of shape elements are composed of shape, installation and arrangement parameters; design parameters for kinetic elements are composed of axis and range parameters; and design parameters of material elements are composed of thermal, lighting and color parameters.

  • Force fields of syndiotactic isoregic PVF crystal have been extracted by optimizing a structure of 2,4,6-trifluoroheptane with ab initio Quantum mechanical method with 6-31G * * basis set, and applied to calculate the structure parameters and elastic constants of the material. The cell parameters turned out to be 5.205$\AA$, of a axis(chain axis), 8.457$\AA$, of b axis and 4.621$\AA$ of c axis. These parameters are in fair agreement with those of the atactic X-ray structure(5.04$\AA$, 8.57$\AA$, and 4.95$\AA$,respectively). The young's modulus of defect free syndiotactic PVF crystal was computed to be 267 GPa comparable to those of polyvinilidene fluoride(277-293 GPa) and polyethylene(264-337 GPa) crystals. Bulk modulus value obtained at optimum geometry is more than twice greater than that obtained at experimental geometry due to large difference of elastic compliance constant (especially Sgj element) at these two different geometries.

  • One of the main parameters that affect the design of suction caisson-supported offshore structures is uplift behavior. Pull-out of suction caissons is profoundly utilized as the offshore wind turbine foundations accompany by a tensile resistance that is a function of a complex interaction between the caisson dimensions, geometry, wall roughness, soil type, load history, pull-out rate, and many other parameters. In this paper, a parametric study using a 3-D finite element model (FEM) of a single offshore suction caisson (SOSC) surrounded by saturated soil is performed to examine the effect of some key factors on the tensile resistance of the suction bucket foundation. Among the aforementioned parameters, caisson geometry and uplift loading as well as the difference between the tensile resistance and suction pressure on the behavior of the soil-foundation system including tensile capacity are investigated. For this purpose, a full model including 3-D suction caisson, soil, and soil-structure interaction (SSI) is developed in Abaqus based on the u-p formulation accounting for soil displacement (u) and pore pressure, P.The dynamic responses of foundations are compared and validated with the known results from the literature. The paper has focused on the effect of geometry change of 3-D SOSC to present the soil-structure interaction and the tensile capacity. Different 3-D caisson models such as triangular, pentagonal, hexagonal, and octagonal are employed. It is observed that regardless of the caisson geometry, by increasing the uplift loading rate, the tensile resistance increases. More specifically, it is found that the resistance to pull-out of the cylinder is higher than the other geometries and this geometry is the optimum one for designing caissons.

  • Generally, the use of robots in manufacturing industry has been increased during the past decade. GMA(Gas Metal Are) welding is an actively growing area and many new procedures have been developed for use with high strength alloys. One of the basic requirement for welding applications is to study relationships between process parameters and bead geometry. The objective of this paper is to develop a new approach involving the use of neural network and multiple regression methods in the prediction of bead geometry for GMA welding process and to develop an intelligent system that enables the prediction of bead geometry using Rapid Prototyping(RP) in order to employ the robotic GMA welding processes. This system developed using MATLAB/SIMULINK, could be effectively implemented not only for estimating bead geometry, but also employed to monitor and control the bead geometry in real time.

  • In GMAW(Gas Metal Arc Welding) process, bead geometry (penetration, bead width and height) is a criterion to estimate welding quality. Bead geometry is affected by welding current, arc voltage and travel speed, shielding gas, CTWB (contact- tip to workpiece distance) and so on. In this paper, welding process variables were selected as welding current, arc voltage and travel speed. And bead geometry was reasoned from the chosen welding process variables using negro-fuzzy algorithm. Neural networks was applied to design FL(fuzzy logic). The parameters of input membership functions and those of consequence functions in FL were tuned through the method of learning by backpropagation algorithm. Bead geometry could be reasoned from welding current, arc voltage, travel speed on FL using the results learned by neural networks.

  • We extend the octree subdivision process from Cartesian coordinates to spherical coordinates to develop more efficient space-partitioning structure for surface models. As an application of the proposed structure, we apply the octree subdivision in spherical coordinates ("S-Octree") to geometry compression in progressive mesh coding. Most previous researches on geometry-driven progressive mesh compression are devoted to improve predictability of geometry information. Unlike this, we focus on the efficient information storage for the space-partitioning structure. By eliminating void space at initial stage and aligning the R axis for the important components in geometry information, the S-Octree improves the efficiency in geometry information coding. Several meshes are tested in the progressive mesh coding based on the S-Octree and the results for performance parameters are presented.
