What is a foundational element of plane geometry? Isn't it possible to constitute the contents of plane geometry from that element? In this paper, we suggest a view point that triangle is a foundational element of plane geometry. And take some examples of reconstruction of usually given contents and mathematical activity centered on the triangle in plane geometry.
This study firstly examined 18 prospective secondary mathematics teachers' understanding of the nature of definitions and the use of the dynamic geometry software Sketchpad to not only improve their understanding of definitions, but also their ability to define geometric concepts themselves. Results indicated that the evaluation of definitions by accurate construction and measurement enabled students to achieve a better understanding of necessary and sufficient conditions, as well as the ability to more readily find counter-examples, and to recognize uneconomical definitions, and improve them.
In this study we in detail analyze Kolmogorov's viewpoint of mathematical abilities, and conclude that school geometry plays important role in developing and upbringing mathematical abilities. We discuss meanings of school geometry in gifted students education, and draw didactical principles concerned with gifted students education. We suggest some geometrical materials which aim for developing and upbringing mathematical abilities.
Over the years, the benefits of instructional manipulatives in mathematics education have been verified by classroom practice and educational research. The purpose of this paper is to introduce how the instructional material, specifically, geoboard could be used and integrated in elementary mathematics classroom in order to develop student's mathematical concepts and process in terms of the following areas: (1) Number '||'&'||' Operation : counting, fraction '||'&'||' additio $n_traction/multiplication (2) Geometry : geometric concepts (3) Geometry : symmetry '||'&'||' motion (4) Measurement : area '||'&'||' perimeter (5) Probability '||'&'||' Statistics : table '||'&'||' graph (6) Pattern : finding patterns Further, future study will continue to foster how manipulatives will enhance children's mathematics knowledge and influence on their mathematics performance.
The article examines four activities whereby the human face of geometry may be promoted in mathematical teaching at the upper secondary level. The activities deal with the historical, epistemological, structural and applicative issues of geometric knowledge.
In this paper we have studied the efficiency of GSP which is widely used in the school. In order to study the efficiency of the computer aided education we divided the students into two groups in the Namwon Middle School : One group called "A" is the classes using GSP, the other called "B" is the classes not using GSP. In the three times examination group A got good marks better than group B. In the questionnaires about the interest in geometry group A is higher than group B. By the results of this study the effort on education with using various multi media can come into the utmost educational effect. Therefore it is necessary for the teachers at school to have self training continuously in order to carry a higher educational quality.
Mathematically, a proof is to create a convincing argument through logical reasoning towards a given proposition or a given statement. Mathematics educators have been working diligently to create environments that will assist students to perform proofs. One of such environments is the use of dynamic-geometry-software in the classroom. This paper reports on a case study and intends to probe into students' own thinking, patterns they used in completing certain tasks, and the extent to which they have utilized technology. Their tasks were to explore the shape-to-shape, shape-to-part, and part-to-part interrelationships of geometric objects when dealing with certain geometric problem-solving situations utilizing dissection-motion-operation (DMO).
This study suggests that it is necessary to prove that the values of three areas of a triangle, which are obtained by the multiplication of the respective base and its corresponding height, are the same. It also seeks to deeply understand the meaning of Area formula of triangles by exploring some questions raised in the analysis of the proof. Area formula of triangles expresses the invariance of congruence and additivity on one hand, and the uniqueness of parallel line, one of the characteristics of Euclidean geometry, on the other. This discussion can be applied to introducing and developing exploratory learning on area in that it revisits the ordinary thinking on area.
Nowadays the education of Mathematics is more important than any other courses in the school. But the most students have felt the difficulty and uncomfortableness in studying Mathematics, especially the geometry course. Moreover teachers also consider that the teaching of geometry is the hardest part of Mathematics. Therefore we suggest an effective method of teaching the geometry course for the middle school students. We provide the activity papers which contain mathematics problems based on the practical life of students. And we analyze the effects of the activity papers using the questionnaire.
It has been always the issue to discuss 'how we teach mathematics' for the mathematical learning. As for an answer to this, it was suggested to use the history of mathematics. The reason is simple that is, the education of mathematics requires to understand mathematics and to know the history of mathematics is effective for mathematical understanding. In particular, the history of algebra was discussed to some extent as an illustration. This study focuses on the history of geometry from this point of view. We review the history of geometry by comparison in terms of three criteria from the origin of geometry to modem differential geometry in the middle of the 20th century, which are backgrounds (inner or outer ones), characterizations (approach, method, object), influences to modem mathematics. As an application of such historical data to the education of mathematics, we pose the problem to determine the order of instruction in mathematics.
