Two fundamental issues exist in the damage theory of geo-material based on the concept of thermodynamics: existence or nonexistence of the dissipation potential, and whether the dissipation potential could be decoupled into a damage potential and a plastic one or not. Thermodynamics theory of elastoplastic damage assumes the existence of dissipation potential, but the presence of dissipation potential is conditional. Based on the dissipation inequality in accord with the second law of thermodynamics, the sufficient and necessary conditions are given for the existence of the dissipation potential separately in total and incremental forms firstly, and proved strictly in theory. With taking advantage of the basic mechanical properties of geo-materials, the nonexistence of the dissipative potential is verified. The sufficient and necessary conditions are also given and proved for the decoupling of the dissipation potential of geo-materials in total and incremental forms. Similarly, the non-decoupling of the dissipation potential has also been proved, which indicates the dissipation potential of geo-materials in total or incremental forms could not be decoupled into a dissipative potential for plasticity and that for damage respectively. The research results for the fundamental issues in the thermodynamics theory of damage will help establish and improve the theoretic basis of elastoplastic damage constitutive model for geo-materials.

In recent years there has been a steady increase in geoenvironmental engineering projects where geotechnical engineering has been combined with environmental concerns. Many of these projects involve some investigation of contaminant in the ground. There are many techniques such as geophysical, drilling, sampling, md pushing techniques for investigation of contaminated ground. The most rapidly developing site characterization techniques for geoenvironmental purposes involve direct push technology, that is, penetration tests. The purpose of this study investigated underground oil storage tanks(USTs) using the envi-cone penetrometer system. The electrical resistivity sensor, pH sensor, ORP sensor, and thermometer are installed in envi-cone penetrometer system. This envi-cone penetrometer system provides a continuous profile of measurements, and it is rapid, repeatable, reliable and cost effective for investigation of contaminated ground surrounding the underground oil storage tanks.

In recent years there has been a steady increase in geoenvironmental engineering research where geotechnical engineering has been combined with environmental concerns in the field of construction and industrial waste reusing in civil works. Many of these projects involve some investigation on the characteristics of geotechnical and environmental properties. In this study, investigation and test on the characteristics of demolished waste concrete was carried out to detect the physical, mechanical, and environmental properties for reusing as embankment and backfill materials in civil works.
This work describes the development of a numerical module with a multiphysics structure to simulate the thermo-hydro-chemo-mechanical behavior of compacted bentonites. First, the conceptual model, based on the state-of-the-art formulation for clay-based engineered barriers in deep geological repositories, is described. Second, the advantages of multiphysics-based modules are highlighted. Then, the guidelines to develop a code using such tools are outlined, presenting an example of implementation. Finally, the simulation of three tests that illustrate the behavior of compacted bentonites assesses the scope of the developed code. The satisfactory results obtained, and the relative simplicity of implementation, show the opportunity of the modeling strategy proposed.

The catalytic filter of Cu-ZSM5/alumina beads was considered to reduce NOx in the urea SCR system. Catalytic support of porous alumina beads with mean pore size $130{\mu}m$ and porosity $75{\sim}83%$ were prepared using foaming and gel-casting method. The Cu-ZSM5 catalysts were coated on the supporting alumina beads using $Cu(NO_3)_2$ by ion exchange method. After a washcoating process was applied to coat 10w% Cu-ZSM5 on porous alumina bead, coating layer was estimated $20{\mu}m$ in thickness. The characterization and the feasibility as a catalytic supports were investigated. And the NOx conversion test in Cu-ZSM5/Alumina Beads filter system was conducted by using Urea as reductants under laboratory test. The NOx conversion was increased as size and porosity of beads and observed more than 95% excellent NOx conversion above $300^{\circ}C$.
This study entails establishing reference standard sand in Nigeria for engineering and geoenvironmental research work. Sands from four geographical locations in southwestern Nigeria were examined for baseline geotechnical and mineralogical properties. A total of sixteen sand samples were collected. The samples were air dried and subjected to tests in accordance with standard specifications. The tests carried out were: specific gravity, grain size analysis, moisture content, bulk density, porosity, void ratio, chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction and Differential Thermal Analysis. The properties of the samples were compared with a standard (Ottawa sand in Illinois of the United States) in order to find out which of the four samples selected from southwestern Nigeria could serve as standard baseline sand. The results show that Igbokoda sand has geotechnical and mineralogical characteristics closest to Ottawa sand. It was therefore concluded that Igbokoda sand could be used as a standard baseline sand for research work in southwestern Nigeria and other parts of Nigeria since it needs little processing to bring it to the same level as standard baseline sand, like the Ottawa sand.

The porous pellets were prepared from porphyry by slurry foaming method. The effect of sintering temperatures on pore structure of porous porphyry pellets with different extension ratio ($E_R$) was investigated by specific surface area, water absorption and porosity, which changed with sintering temperatures. When the sintering temperatures increased from $975^{\circ}C$ to $1075^{\circ}C$, specific surface area and water absorption of the all samples decreased. In case of the sample with an equal sintering temperature, $E_R=3.0$ pellets had little influence on pore structure compared to the $E_R=2.0$ pellets. As a results, it was shown by SEM that facilitated formation of micro pores at $E_R=2.0$ pellets shrunk increasingly after sintering process. At $E_R=3.0$ and sintering temperature at $1025^{\circ}C$, optimum conditions of the porous porphyry porous pellets was found. Also, Escherichia coli removal efficiency of the silver-containing porphoyry porous pellets was measured for the feasibility as a antibacterial media. The antibacterial activity of prepared silver-containing sample was maintained above 90% for 40 days.
