  • This study is about the applicability of copper slag as the ground improvement material. By the geo-technical characteristics of the copper slag and by the effect of consolidation and under drainage condition, it is proved that the copper slag can be used for ground improvement material as substitution for sand. As a result of laboratory tests, it was shown that the permeability of the copper slag was similar to that of sands under the vertical drainage condition. In addition, the copper slag showed higher critical hydraulic gradient than that of sand under up-ward vertical flow state. The copper slag has potential safety against piping and it has internal stability of particles. The conclusion is that the copper slag is suitable for drainage and filter material.

  • In this study, it was examined a strength characteristic of organic acid material that is eco-friendly and low energy as a soil improving material. The object of this study is to analysis of strength changes with observing the clay mixed organic acid material through the unconfined compression strength test and triaxial compression test during 28 days. As a result of the tests, the strength of clay mixed organic acid material is increased when the more ages are prolonged, the more organic acid material mixture ratio growed. Therefore, in grasping the strength improvement effects of clay by organic acid material mixing, it confirmed that organic acid material as soil improving material is effective through unconfined compression strength test and triaxial compression test. Through this test, the definite strength increase is confirmed according to the mixture of the organic acid material and the possibility of soil improvement is also confirmed based on this result. From now on, detailed examination and field test will help closely to definite strength characteristics.

  • Within a country, owing to the restriction of aggregate which have been supplied to construction sites, applicability of byproducts such as the copper slag is expected to be more reasonable. In this study, on the basis of characteristics, grain distribution and environmental stability of copper slag, its engineering application was estimated as the vertical and horizontal drainage material. As a results of laboratory tests, it was shown that the permeability of the copper slag was similar to that of sands under vertical drainage condition. In addition, the copper slag showed higher critical hydraulic gradient than that of sand under upward vertical flow state. The copper slag has potential safety against piping and it that the copper slag is suitable for drainage and filter material.

  • Material functions about effective stress, permeability, coefficient of consolidation and coefficient of volume change has important role to predict consolidation velocity and settlement of soft ground. Modified oedometer for radial drainage is adapted to find out material functions on laboratory tests. Undisturbed sample for laboratory tests were taken from construction sites of industrial complexes on southern coastal area which consists of upper dredged fill and lower original clay layer. For different drainage condition in consolidation process void ratio, effective stress, permeability, coefficient of consolidation and coefficient of volume change has been assessed with results of existing standard oedometer tests. It is worthwhile to note that consolidation material functions could be expressed as regression equation by Stark (2005), heterogeneity for permeability could be assessed from these relationships.

  • This study was made on the fact that the environmental impact and durability of the recently developed alkali silicasol chemical grout material. The grout material used for this study was designed to understand its environmental impact and durability through the SEM, chemical resistance test, leaching test, permeability test. In order to compare with the engineering characteristics regarding alkali silicasol grout material and sodium silicate grout material. As a result of SEM, the surface and internal tissues of alkali silicasol grout material could be identified to be denser than those of sodium silicate. As a result of leaching test the adaptability was identified as grout material as it had proved to be an ecological material owing to the total amount of the element to be leached being extremely little. As a result of permeability test it is judged that it is possible to apply the silicasol to the site in the place requiring the water cut-off as the silicasol.

  • Collapse of a huge structural material has brought about enormous loss of lives and property. Every construction may be destroyed by the nature's power and careless mistake of human as well as its own defect. So a great number of concern and detailed managing technique are demanded not in constructing work but also in management of constructed material. The Interest of construction safety has Increased rapidly and a plenty of effort has been attempted to manage systematically. In this study, the use of FM(Facilities Management) as a branch of GSIS(Geo-spatial Information System) was developed to offer the users convenient managing achievement and establishment of history managing system in the bridge management system. This study accomplished dividing all information of images, photos, drawing and etc. into their items of time, material and the person in charge, and developed to stue and maintain those items in database. Related database which is composed of recording of check, retrieving and adding the data was accomplished to an easy access of database, and by using these data as output for example images, m display, report and hard copy, this system was proved to help manage efficiently in bridge management system.

  • In the site for apartment construction, the contaminated soils of the heavy metal and the oil were appeared. The representative soil samples were sampled at 7 sampling points. To confirm the geotechnical stability of the contaminated soils, the environmental checks for the heavy metal and the oil. The soils of 2 sampling points were contaminated heavily, so it was estimated that these soils must be disused. For 1 sampling point of the slightly contaminated soil, to confirm the re-applicability of fill material, the stability analysis was performed and it was concluded that this soil will be able to re-use.

  • The main objective of this study is to develop an analytical model for the resilient modulus of EPS geofoam when it is applied for flexible pavement as a subgrade material. This analytical model has been developed based on the results from triaxial compression tests. And this model can be used to analyze the flexible pavement structure using the finite element method by developing a program or modifying an existing program for any desired purposes. The results of this study show that the EPS geofoam as a replacement material for subgrade in flexible pavement is a feasible alternative to natural weak soils.

  • Unconfined compressive strength tests were performed to evaluate curing characteristics of controlled low strength material(CLSM) made with coal ashes. It is found that unconfined compressive strength normalized by curing times, increases as decreasing the water contents of CLSM particularly during first three days. Dynamic cone penetrometer tests were also carried out to evaluate cost-effective CLSM lump strength characteristics with time. It takes around 10 days to reach target strength, 500kPa (penetration rate, 20mm/blow). Curing rate significantly decreases after 10 days elapsed regardless of CLSM formulation.

  • The low temperature and temperature difference (variation) may cause to deteriorate the integrity of tunnel constructed in cold region. An insulation material was developed and applied to the tunnel lining surface to keep the temperature of tunnel lining constant in spite of temperature variation at outdoor. The lining surface where the insulation material applied showed the less sensitive to temperature variation than non-applied lining surface.
