A study on comings and goings of the meridian gi in $\ulcorner$Huangdineijing$\lrcorner$ (황제내경(黃帝內經)의 경기(經氣) 왕래(往來)에 대한 고찰)

  • Objectives : The aim of this study is to investigate the properties of Meridian Gi in $\ulcorner$Huangdineijing(黃帝內經)$\lrcorner$, specially one of the movement properties like that comings and goings of Gi. Methods : Through searching concepts and properties of Meridian Gi in several chapters of $\ulcorner$Huangdineijing(黃帝內經)$\lrcorner$, many phrases concerned with that properties could be explained and reconstructed into new motional shape of Meridian Gi. Results : The basic characters of comings and goings of Meridian Gi or genuine Gi originate from food essence, and that are like a kind of waves. The most important moments of acupuncture treatment is such time of it's short passing the acupoints, carrying out tonifying and purging methods by controlling the spirit. Conclusions : The Meridian Gi consists of anti-pathogenic Gi so called genuine Gi and pathogenic Gi. Medical doctor must correctly knows the flow of Meridian Gi to operate tonifying and purging method of acupuncture treatments in order to get the desired results. Also maintaining very sensitive state in diagnostic process, the most important key points is to control the spirit and adjust mental activities of both doctors and patients. The motional properties of Meridian Gi are actually concerned with the arrival of Gi and reinforcement-reduction along and against Meridian Gi.

  • A Shared Services center (SSC) is created by removing common administrative functions from operational divisions within an organization, and centralizing the functions in a separate centre. SSC helps supporting organizations to focus on core activities and to achieve cost reduction as well as service quality enhancement. In contrast to many leading global companies which has been adopted SSCs from early 90's. A Company's HR SSC which has opened this year is the first genuine SSC practice in Korea. Centering on the case of A Company' s HR SSC implementation, we discussed on some practical implications for companies which has future plan to introduce a shared service center.

Electrical Properties of Diamond-like Carbon Thin Film synthesized by PECVD (PECVD로 합성한 다이아몬드상 카본박막의 전기적 특성)

  • In addition to its similarity to genuine diamond film, diamond-like carbon (DLC) film has many advantages, including its wide band gap and variable refractive index. In this study, DLC films were prepared by the RF PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) method on silicon substrates using methane ($CH_4$) and hydrogen ($H_2$) gas. We examined the effects of the RF power on the electrical properties of the DLC films. The films were deposited at several RF powers ranging from 50 to 175 W in steps of 25 W. The leakage current of DLC films increased at higher deposition RF power. And the resistivities of DLC films grown at 50 W and 175 W were $5\times10^{11}$ ${\Omega}cm$ and $2.68\times10^{10}$ ${\Omega}cm$, respectively.

A Follow-up Association Study of Genetic Variants for Bone Mineral Density in a Korean Population

  • Bone mineral density (BMD) is one of the quantitative traits that are genetically inherited and affected by various factors. Over the past years, genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have searched for many genetic loci that influence BMD. A recent meta-analysis of 17 GWASs for BMD of the femoral neck and lumbar spine is the largest GWAS for BMD to date and offers 64 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 56 associated loci. We investigated these BMD loci in a Korean population called Korea Association REsource (KARE) to identify their validity in an independent study. The KARE population contains genotypes from 8,842 individuals, and their BMD levels were measured at the distal radius (BMD-RT) and midshaft tibia (BMD-TT). Thirteen genomic loci among 56 loci were significantly associated with BMD variations, and 3 loci were involved in known biological pathways related to BMD. In order to find putative functional variants, nearby SNPs in relation to linkage equilibrium were annotated, and their possible functional effects were predicted. These findings reveal that tens of variants, not a single factor, may contribute to the genetic architecture of BMD; have an important role regardless of ethnic group; and may highlight the importance of a replication study in GWASs to validate genuine loci for BMD variation.

Structural Variation of Diamond-like Carbon Thin Film According to the Annealing Temperature (열처리온도에 따른 다이아몬드상 카본박막의 구조적 특성변화)

  • In addition to its similarity to genuine diamond film, diamond-like carbon (DLC) film has many advantages, including its wide band gap and variable refractive index. In this study, DLC films were prepared by the RF PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) method on silicon substrates using methane $(CH_4)$ and hydrogen $(H_2)$ gas. We examined the effects of the post annealing temperature on the structural variation of the DLC films. The films were annealed at temperatures ranging from 300 to $900^{\circ}C$ in steps of $200^{\circ}C$ using RTA equipment in nitrogen ambient. The thickness of the film and interface between film and substrate were observed by surface profiler, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), respectively. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that DLC films were graphitized ($I_D/I_G$, G-peak position and $sp^2/sp^3$ increased) ratio at higher annealing temperature. The variation of surface as a function of annealing treatment was verified by a AFM and contact angle method.

An Experimental Study on the a Light Device which Adopt Safety Ultra Constant Dischange Lamp (초정압 방전램프(UCD)를 적용한 안전 조명 장치에 관한 연구)

  • This paper describes the development of various lighting equipment adapting Ultra Constant Discharge Lamp that has newly been on commercial supply in the market. Meeting the required conditions of lighting equipment, various types of UCD Lamp equipment with excellent performances could be successfully developed. In order to provide a guideline for the economical lighting product selection, the analyzed data comparison between Hi-pressure Sodium Lamp which has been the most popular lamp for street lighting and UCD Lamp is provided. The conclusions of the study are made as follows; (1) The performance measurement result of UCD Lamp shows excellent Luminous Efficacy as 108Lm/W, daylight-like Color Rendering Index as 90Ra, and the best operating temperature range as $-50^{\circ}C{\sim}+85^{\circ}C$. Comparing to the Hi-pressure Sodium Lamp, UCD could be evaluated as much superior products. (2) In an assembled status with the lighting fixture (Type STB형-60W), UCD Lamp was tested OK for one hour duration at the temperature range form $-50^{\circ}C$ to $+85^{\circ}C$ and the humidity of 98%. The operation at the extremely low temperature can be an excellent feature to enable the export to the cold temperature regions such as Northern Europe and Russia and the specific applications for defense systems and special industry. (3) As UCD Lamp is a genuine Korea made product following Energy-saving and Eco-friendly policy, it should be appreciated as one of the best $CO^2$ reduction Green product.

Replication of the Association of the 6q22.31c Locus near GJA1 with Pulse Rate in the Korean Population

  • Pulse rate is known to be related to diverse phenotypes, such as cardiovascular diseases, lifespan, arrhythmia, hypertension, lipids, diabetes, and menopause. We have reported two genomewide significant genetic loci responsible for the variation in pulse rate as a part of the Korea Association Resource (KARE) project, the genomewide association study (GWAS) that was conducted with 352,228 single nucleoride polymorphisms typed in 8,842 subjects in the Korean population. GJA1 was implied as a functionally causal gene for pulse rate from the KARE study, but lacked evidence of replication. To re-evaluate the association of a locus near GJA1 with pulse rate, we looked up this signal in another GWAS conducted in a Health Examinee-shared cohort of 3,703 samples. Not only we were able to confirm two pulse rate loci (1q32.2a near CD46 and 6q22.13c near LOCL644502) identified in the KARE GWAS, we also replicated a locus (6q22.31c) near GJA1 by the lookup in the Health Examinee GWAS. Considering that the GJA1-encoded protein is a major component of cardiac gap junctions, a functional study might be necessary to validate its genuine molecular biological role in the synchronized contraction of the heart.

FusionScan: accurate prediction of fusion genes from RNA-Seq data

  • Identification of fusion gene is of prominent importance in cancer research field because of their potential as carcinogenic drivers. RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) data have been the most useful source for identification of fusion transcripts. Although a number of algorithms have been developed thus far, most programs produce too many false-positives, thus making experimental confirmation almost impossible. We still lack a reliable program that achieves high precision with reasonable recall rate. Here, we present FusionScan, a highly optimized tool for predicting fusion transcripts from RNA-Seq data. We specifically search for split reads composed of intact exons at the fusion boundaries. Using 269 known fusion cases as the reference, we have implemented various mapping and filtering strategies to remove false-positives without discarding genuine fusions. In the performance test using three cell line datasets with validated fusion cases (NCI-H660, K562, and MCF-7), FusionScan outperformed other existing programs by a considerable margin, achieving the precision and recall rates of 60% and 79%, respectively. Simulation test also demonstrated that FusionScan recovered most of true positives without producing an overwhelming number of false-positives regardless of sequencing depth and read length. The computation time was comparable to other leading tools. We also provide several curative means to help users investigate the details of fusion candidates easily. We believe that FusionScan would be a reliable, efficient and convenient program for detecting fusion transcripts that meet the requirements in the clinical and experimental community. Molecular Identification of Deer Antlers using Nucleotide Sequences of Mitochondrial Displacement Loop Region (미토콘드리아 displacement loop 영역의 염기서열을 이용한 녹용의 원산지 동정)

  • It is reported that about 80% of deer antlers (Cervi Pantotricuhum Cornu) produced in the world are consumed in Korea. Fraudulent replacement or mislabeling of costly deer antlers with cheaper ones, however, is one of the most common problems in the Korean deer antler market. Therefore, there is a continuous need for the development of genetic markers to discriminate between genuine and fraudulent deer antlers. This study was performed to develop a method for the identification and authentication of deer antlers using nucleotide sequence analysis against displacement loop of mitochondrial genome among four deer antlers, Cervus eleaphus sibericus, Cervus eleaphus bactrianus, Cervus eleaphus Canadensis, and Cervus eleaphus, originated from Russia, China, North America and New Zealand, respectively. As a result, multiple-alignment of mitochondrial displacement (D) loop region in 1.2 kb showed that, among the four deer antlers, a deleted sequence of about 70 bps was only found in Cervus elaphus bactrianus from China. Finally, Cervus elaphus bactrianus among nine samples of deer antlers were successfully identified by PCR using primer amplifying deleted D-loop. Cervus elaphus bactrianus was also confirmed from cloning the PCR products and their nucleotide sequence analyses were confirmed. However, no marker to identify Cervus eleaphus sibericus, Cervus eleaphus canadensis and Cervus eleaphus were found in the nucleotide sequences of mitochondrial D-loop. Our results suggest that PCR for deleted D-loop region of mitochondrial DNA are useful for identification and authentication of deer antlers of Cervus elaphus bactrianus originating from China.
