  • This paper provides two types of engineering J estimation equations for cylinders with finite internal axial surface cracks under internal pressure. The first type is the so-called GE/EPRI type J estimation equation based on Ramberg-Osgood materials. Based on detailed 3-D FE results the GE/EPRI-type J estimation equation along the crack front is proposed and validated for Ramberg-Osgood materials. For more general application, the developed GE/EPRI-type solutions are then re-formulated based on the reference stress concept. The proposed reference stress based J estimation equation has good agreement between the FE results and the proposed reference stress based J estimation provides confidence in the use of the proposed method for elastic-plastic fracture mechanics of pressurised piping

  • A new method in the fault tree analysis (FTA) for the reliability calculation is suggested. Two steps are necessary in traditional method in evaluation of the occurrence probability of top event in fault tree (FT). The first step is to find the minimal outsets, and the second one is to substitute the result into the poincare equation. In order to reduce the enormous computing time of this method, lots of rapid algorithms have been developed. Almost of all achievements were, however, based on the partial structural properties of FT. In this paper, the FT is transformed to a non-linear graph G which has the same minimal outsets of original n, and then the reliability is calculated using the domination theory. In this new method, the required number of equation terms are at most $2^n$ (n is node number of graph G), while $2^m$-1 (m is the number of minimal cutsets) calculation terms are required in the poincare equation in traditional method. Since m>>n in general. our new method reduces the calculation time significantly.

  • In this paper we establish the general solution of the functional equation f(2x+y)+f(x-2y)=2f(x+y)+2f(x-y)+f(-x)+f(-y) and investigate the Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stability of this equation in quasi-Banach spaces. The concept of Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stability originated from Th. M. Rassias' stability theorem that appeared in his paper: On the stability of the linear mapping in Banach spaces, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 72 (1978), 297-300.

  • This paper deals with the problem of the determination of the response of a viscoelastic Bernoulli-Navier beam, which is resting on an elastic medium. Assuming uniaxial bending, the displacement of the beam axis is governed by an integro-differential equation. The compatibility of the displacements between the beam and the elastic medium is imposed through an integral equation. In general and in particular in the case of a Boussinesq medium, the solution has to be pursued numerically. On the contrary, in the case of a Winkler's medium the compatibility equation becomes a linear finite relationship, which allows finding an original analytical solution of the problem for both hereditary and aging behavior of the beam. Some numerical examples complete the paper, in which a comparison is made between the hereditary and the aging model for the creep of the beam.

  • In this paper, we develop an accurate explicit finite difference method for the two-dimensional Black-Scholes equation with a hybrid boundary condition. In general, the correlation term in multi-asset options is problematic in numerical treatments partially due to cross derivatives and numerical boundary conditions at the far field domain corners. In the proposed hybrid boundary condition, we use a linear boundary condition at the boundaries where at least one asset is zero. After updating the numerical solution by one time step, we reduce the computational domain so that we do not need boundary conditions. To demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed algorithm, we calculate option prices and their Greeks for the two-asset European call and cash-or-nothing options. Computational results show that the proposed method is accurate and is very useful for nonlinear boundary conditions.

  • The mechanical properties of the most widely used cryogenic materials, i.e. austenitic stainless steel (ASS), aluminum alloy and invar steel, strongly depend on temperatures and strain rates. These phenomena show very complicated non-linear behaviors and cannot be expressed by general constitutive equation. In this study, an unified constitutive equation was proposed to represent the effect of temperature and strain rate on the materials. The proposed constitutive equation has been based on Tomita/Iwamoto and Bodner/Partom model for the expression of 2nd hardening due to martensite phase transformation of ASS. To simulate ductile fracture, modified Bodner/Chan damage model was additionally applied to the model and the model validity was verified by comparison of experimental and simulation results.

  • The arbitrary V-notched crack problem is considered. The general expressions for the stress components on this problem are obtained as explicit series forms composed of independent unknown coefficients which are denoted by coefficients of eigenvector. For this results eigenvalue equation is performed first through introducing complex stress functions and applying the traction free boundary conditions. Next solving this equation, eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors are obtained respectively, and finally inserting these results into stress components, the general equations are obtained. These results are also shown to be applicable to the symmetric V-notched crack or straight crack. It can be shown that this solutions are composed of the linear combination of Mode I and Mode II solutions which are obtained from different characteristic equations, respectively. Through performing asymptotic analysis for stresses, the stress intensity factor is given as a closed form equipped with the unknown coefficients of eigenvector. In order to calculate the unknown coefficients. based on these general explicit equations, numerical programming using the overdetermined boundary collocation method which is algorithmed originally by Carpenter is also worked out. As this programming requires the input data, the commercial FE analysis for stresses is performed. From this study, for some V-notched problems, unknown coefficients can be calculated numerically and also fracture parameters are determined.

  • PURPOSES: Implementation and verification of the simple linear cohesive viscoelastic contact model that can be used to simulate dynamic behavior of sticky aggregates. METHODS: The differential equations were derived and the initial conditions were determined to simulate a free falling ball with a sticky surface from a ground. To describe this behavior, a combination of linear contact model and a cohesive contact model was used. The general solution for the differential equation was used to verify the implemented linear cohesive viscoelastic API model in the DEM. Sensitivity analysis was also performed using the derived analytical solutions for several combinations of damping coefficients and cohesive coefficients. RESULTS : The numerical solution obtained using the DEM showed good agreement with the analytical solution for two extreme conditions. It was observed that the linear cohesive model can be successfully implemented with a linear spring in the DEM API for dynamic analysis of the aggregates. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that the derived closed form solutions are applicable for the analysis of the rebounding behavior of sticky particles, and for verification of the implemented API model in the DEM. The assumption of underdamped condition for the viscous behavior of the particles seems to be reasonable. Several factors have to be additionally identified in order to develop an enhanced contact model for an asphalt mixture.

  • Nowadays, the viscous damper using high viscosity oil was much to be used for engine shafting system to reduce the excessive additional stress by torsional vibration. In general, it was assumed that the viscous damper could be modelled having only damping coefficient, that is to say, whose stiffness be ignored. But it is found that there exists a jump phenomenon, as a kind of non-linear vibration, in the actual engine shafting system with a damper of high viscosity. Therefore the damper ring and the casing are modelled as two mass elastic system with a complex viscosity. Also, to analyze a non-linear phenomenon, it is assumed that the viscous damper has a linear stiffness coefficient in proportion to the angular amplitude and a non-linear stiffness coefficient in proportion to cube of the angular amplitude. For the analysis, Quasi-Newton method with BFGS(Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno) formula is used. Both calculated and measured values are provided in this paper which confirm the possibility of applying non-linear theory to engine shafting system with viscous damper.

  • This paper presents linear algebraic equations in the form of recursive formula to compute elastokinematic characteristics of a suspension system. Conventional methods of elastokinematic analysis are based on nonlinear kinematic constrant equations and force equilibrium equations for constrained mechanical systems, which require complicated and time-consuming implicit computing methods to obtain the solution. The proposed linearized elastokinematic equations in the form of recursive formula are derived based on the assumption that the displacements of elastokinematic behavior of a constrained mechanical system under external forces are very small. The equations can be easily computerized in codes, and have the advantage of sharing the input data of existing general multi body dynamic analysis codes. The equations can be applied to any form of suspension once the type of kinematic joints and elastic components are identified. The validity of the method has been proved through the comparison of the results from established elastokinematic analysis software. Error estimation and analysis due to piecewise linear assumption are also discussed.
