Methods : The 30 patients who had a diagnosis of high intensity zone by lumbar-MRI and admitted to Gwangju oriental medical hospital in wonkwang university from January 2005 to August 2004 were observed. The symptom of inpatients is low back pain with or without sciatica. We treated 30 patients by scolopendrid aquacupuncture besides the general conservative treatment of oriental medicine. Results and Conclusion : The scolopendrid aquacupuncture treatment led to improvement in the pain and symptom of disability as determined by all efficacy measures. After scolopendrid aquacupuncture treatment, there was improvement in VAS, ROM and SLRT. This results suggest that scolopendrid aquacupuncture is good method for treatment of low back pain with or without sciatica showing high intensity zone of magnetic resonance imaging.

  • Objectives : We investicated correlation between Yangdorak and Meridian at Idiopathic facial nerve paralysis patients. Methods : For Yangdorak examination, We made a comparison between 21 patients who were diagnosticated to Idiopathic facial nerve paralysis and 22 persons who were not. Results : 1. The stress showed the highest frequency in premonitory cause at onset. 2. In comparing results on the Yangdorak general mean, they were not statistically significant between two group(p<0.05). 3. In comparing results on the Stomach(ST)-meridian Yangdorak mean, Idiopathic facial nerve paralysis group is stastically significant in comparison with non-facial paralysis group(p<0.05). 4. In comparing results on the Small Intestine(SI)-meridian Yangdorak mean, Idiopathic facial nerve paralysis group is not stastically significant in comparison with non-facial paralysis group(p<0.05). Conclusion : Yangdorak may be used for a method to objective clinical examination. But further studies are required for a use of practical indicator.

  • Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture therapy in patients with Cervical Herniated Intervertebral Disc Methods: We investigated 30 cases of patients with Cervical Herniated Intervertebral Disc, who had been treated from October 2008 to December 2011. We divided patients into two groups: Group I was treated by Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture therapy and general acupuncture and Group II was treated by acupuncture therapy only. We measured the efficacy of treatments using the numerical rating scale(NRS). Results: 1. The treatment method for Group I was more effective than that of Group II in reducing the NRS on the tenth day after admission but there was no statistically significant difference between the results of two groups on the fifth day after admission and the tenth day after admission. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture therapy is effective in reducing pain for patients with Cervical Herniated Intervertebral Disc. Further clinical research is needed to verify these results and findings.

  • Objectives : The objective of this study is to report a case of a patient with a fracture of the 1st metatarsal bone, whose symptoms improved after receiving Complex Korean Medical treatment mainly focused on acupuncture. Methods : During admission treatment, the patient received 2 sessions of acupuncture treatment, 1 session of pharmacopuncture treatment, and electromoxibustion daily. To assess the patient's condition regarding the 1st metatarsal bone fracture, X-rays were performed on the affected area of the patient on a weekly basis, along with a daily follow up on the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), degree of swelling (measured in cm via measuring tape), and the temperature of the affected area. The Foot Function Index (FFI) and Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) were also used to add credibility in assessing the patient's current condition. Results : After 4 weeks of hospital admission treatment, the NRS of the pain in the affected area decreased from 4 to 1, with the night pain NRS of the affected area also being reduced from 8 to 0. There was a general improvement in the swelling and temperature of the affected area, as well as the FFI and HAQ of the patient. Conclusions : The study shows that complex Korean medical treatment can be effective in treating patients with bone fractures even without interventions involving traditional Korean herbal medicine.

  • Objectives : This study reports the clinical effects of miniscalpel needle therapy in patients with carpal tunnel or tarsal tunnel syndrome. Methods : Three patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) or tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) (first case, patient with CTS and TTS; second case, patient with CTS; and third case, patient with TTS) were treated with miniscalpel needle (MSN) therapy and integrative Korean medical treatment. The Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Neuropathic Pain Scale (NPS), Boston scale score, and AOFAS (American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society) ankle-hindfoot score were measured. Results : In general, outcome measures after treatment showed improvement in all cases. In the first case (CTS and TTS), scores on the NRS, NPS, and Boston scale decreased, and AOFAS ankle-hind foot scores increased. In addition, Tinel's sign showed improvement. In the second case (CTS), scores on the NRS, NPS, and Boston scale, and Tinel's sign, were decreased. In the third case (TTS), scores on the NRS and NPS, and Tinel's sign, showed improvement, and AOFAS ankle-hind foot scores were increased. Conclusion : These results suggest that MSN therapy has a meaningful clinical effect in CTS and TTS.
