  • Sixty three species and 5 varieties belonging to 30 fungal genera were collected from 75 soil samples. Cultivated (29 genera and 58 species + 5 var.), desert (22 and 35 + 2 var.) and saline soil (21 and 41 + 1 var.) fungi were recovered on glucose-, cellulose- and 50% sucrose-Czapek's agar at $28^{\circ}C$. The most common genera were Alternaria, Aspergillus, Emerieella, Fusarium, Mycosphaerella, Nectria and Penicillium. The most prevalent species from the three types of soils on the three types of media were Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, A. terreus, Emerieella nidulans, Fusarium oxysporum, Myeosphaerella tassiana, Nectria haematococca and Penicillium ehrysogenum. Chaetomium globosum was in the top of fungi in producing endo-$\beta$-1,4-glucanases among the 42 tested isolates obtained from soils on cellulose-Czapek's agar. Maximum production of this enzyme by C. globosum obtained after 6 days of incubation at $30^{\circ}C$ with culture medium containing maltose as a carbon source and ammonium nitrate as a nitrogen source and pH initially adjusted to 6.

  • Investigated was the ground-walking Coleoptera at the moor and adjacent forest at 800 m and rice paddies at lower level of 50 m in altitude. There were 5 species belonging to 5 genera and 2 families, 4 species belonging to 4 genera and 3 families, and 17 species belonging to 11 genera and 2 families respectively. Diplous depressus (Gebler) was the dominant species at the moor and forest in distinctive numbers, while Pheropsophus javanus (Dejean) was the one at the paddies. Three investigated sites supported independently their ground-walking Coleoptera groups. The moor group seemed to fail in establishing the resident Coleoptera community. The fact may imply to be related a kind of the pioneer species in early dry succession that D. depressus was found in a considerable range between forest and moor. The Coleoptera groups of moor and forest was different from that of paddies in species structure.

  • Many studies require expression analysis of the same gene/promoter across a range of bacterial genera. However, there is currently a lack of availability of reporters based on the broad-host-range IncQ replicon, which is compatible with a popular improved IncP transfer system that is self-transfer defective. We report IncQ lacZ reporter plasmids with features including (1) compatibility with IncP, IncW, and pBHR/pBBR replicons, (2) a variety of antibiotic markers (Sp-r, Sm-r, Km-r, Cm-r), (3) convenient mobilization via a novel self-transfer-defective IncP conjugation system, and (4) GenBank DNA sequences. Utility is demonstrated using three different promoters in different Gram-negative genera.

  • The taxonomic revision of the family Scorpaenidae was conducted based on the specimens collected from the coasts of the Korean Peninsula from 1989 to 1992. The scorpionfishes of Korea are composed of 30 species in 8 genera, and the keys to species and genera are provided with svnonvms and their distributions. Four species newly reported from Korea are redescribed and figured: Sebastiscus tenius (Barsukov et Chen), Sebastes steindachneri Hilgendorf, S. minor Barsukov and S. zonatus Chen et Barsukov. It is noted that the genus Sebastes comprise 18 species in Korean waters without endemics. Most species of the Korean scorrionfishes are shared with Japanese and Taiwanese faunas including temperate and tropical scorpionfishes. Most Sebastes species are recognized as temperate elements but other genera of this family are regarded as tropical elements.

  • Three monophyletic branches are strongly supported in a phylogenetic analysis of the Teloschistaceae based on combined data sets of internal transcribed spacer and large subunit nrDNA and 12S small subunit mtDNA sequences. These are described as new monotypic genera: Jasonhuria S. Y. Kondr., L. Lőkös et S. -O. Oh, Loekoesia S. Y. Kondr., S. -O. Oh et J. -S. Hur and Olegblumia S. Y. Kondr., L. Lőkös et J. -S. Hur. Three new combinations for the type species of these genera are proposed.

  • The mycoflora on the hair in 25 samples of each of goats and sheep collected from Libya was analyzed using two isolation methods at $25^{\circ}C$. Seventy species and 3 varieties belonging to 31 genera were collected from the two substrates. The hairs of sheep were polluted with fungi than goat, contained high total counts and number of genera and species. Two species of true dermatophytes were isolated namely Trichophyton rubrum and T. terrestre. Several keratiophilic species were isolated of which Chrysosporium indicum, C. keratinophilum and C. tropicum were the most prevalent. The commonest saprophytes in order of frequency were members of the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, Emericella, Alternaria and Cochliobolus.

  • Although trout farming is well established in Korea, very little information is available on the composition of intestinal microflora in rainbow trout (Salmo gairdnerii). In 1994, from October through November, we investigated the composition and succession of intestinal bacteria. As fish grew, total viable counts increased dramatically until 45 days after fertilization when anaerobes started to appear on the media. After this time, they increased steadily. Ten aerobic generic were identified and Gram negative bacteria constituted 85% of total isolates. Among these, Pseudomonas, Eikenella, and Alcaligenes were the three major genera. Six anaerobic genera were isolated and identified. The ratio of anaerobes to aerobes was about 1 : 1 in adult trout and the composition of genera was changed under different conditions.

  • An ecological survey on the vegetation of Poong Island was conducted for 2 days from August 19 through 20, 1981 and the results obtained are summarized as follows: Flora of this island consist of 65 families, 157 genera, 167 species, 27 varieties and 3 forma of which herbs are classified into 38 families, 98 genera, 98 species, 20 varieties, 2 forma and trees into 33 families, 61 genera, 69 species, 7 varieties and 1 forma. Evergreen broad-leaved trees are scanty in distribution and only Eionymus japonia thunb. and Euonymus forannei var. radicans (Sieb. et Miq) Rehder are observed. The dominant species of this island is Pinus densiflora. Due to the low density of population (149.8) and low pure farming rate of this island, the destruction of nature is rarely to be noticed and therefore natural vegetation may be considered to have been well preserved.

  • Three new genera and species of siphonostomatoid copepods are described as associates of sponges from shallow water of Samar Island in the Philippines: Samarus filipes n. gen., n. sp., Paurocheres dentatus n. gen., n. sp., and Platymyzon umbonatum n. gen., n. sp. A new family Samarusidae is proposed to accommodate Samarus n. gen. which has rudimentary legs 1-5 represented only by filiform setae. Paurocheres n. gen. is characterized by 2-segmented endopod of leg 4 and reduced setation of legs, and Platymyzon n. gen. by missing of mandibular gnathobase.

  • We reviewed five South Korean species belonging to the genera Clistopyga Gravenhorst, 1829 and Endromopoda $Hell{\acute{e}}n$, 1939, which are recorded for the first time from South Korea: Clistopyga incitator (Fabricius, 1793), Clistopyga sziladyi Kiss, 1959, Endromopoda arundinator (Fabricius, 1804), Endromopoda detrita (Holmgren, 1860), and Endromopoda phragmitidis (Perkins, 1957). The genus Clistopyga can be distinguished from the congeneric species by distinctly upcurved ovipositor, with enlarged hypopygium, and Endromopoda by apical perpendicular teeth of ovipositor on apex. Diagnoses, illustrations and keys to South Korean species of the genera Clistopyga and Endromopoda are provided.
