  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions on youth's family role salience. The participants in this research were 526 university students(male 200, female 326). All respondents submitted their answers on a self-report questionnaire. The measurement instruments were Family Role Salience Scale(Hong, 2001), Self-esteem Scale(Rosenberg, 1979), and Gender Role Attitudes Scale(Kang, 2000). The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-tests, and multiple regressions. The major results of this study were twofold. (a) The young male exhibited higher levels of family role salience (marital role salience, parental role salience, and homecare role salience) perceptions than the young female did. (b) Self-esteem showed a significant influence on the perceptions of youth's family role salience, whereas family socioeconomic status was a non-significant factor. However, gender role attitudes, parental relationship satisfaction, and religion showed different influences on the perceptions of family role salience for young male and female. Implications for educators and directions for future research are discussed.

  • This paper investigates the acoustic characteristics of English fricatives in the TIMIT corpus, with a special focus on the role of gender in rendering fricatives in American English. The TIMIT database includes 630 talkers and 2342 different sentences, comprising over five hours of speech. Acoustic analyses are conducted in the domain of spectral and temporal properties by treating gender as an independent factor. The results of acoustic analyses revealed that the most acoustic properties of voiceless sibilants turned out to be different between male and female speakers, but those of voiceless non-sibilants did not show differences. A classification experiment using linear discriminant analysis (LDA) revealed that 85.73% of voiceless fricatives are correctly classified. The sibilants are 88.61% correctly classified, whereas the non-sibilants are only 57.91% correctly classified. The majority of the errors are from the misclassification of /ɵ/ as [f]. The average accuracy of gender classification is 77.67%. Most of the inaccuracy results are from the classification of female speakers in non-sibilants. The results are accounted for by resorting to biological differences as well as macro-social factors. The paper contributes to the understanding of the role of gender in a large-scale speech corpus.

  • The purpose of this paper is to describe the situation of everyday life of women and men in Germany and gender related aspects. Therefore social demographical data, presented tv the Office for European Statistics, Luxembourg and by German statistical data, are used. Based on this data the different roles, responsibilities, and social positions of women and men are interpreted in the context of the idea of mainstreaming gender. In comparison to other European countries, especially to the Scandinavian countries, the situation of women in Germany still has to be improved. It is a prevalent problem for women to arrange family life and working career, because the gender-related role-allocation is still an issue. Women, who are involved in looking after children, are significantly less engaged in business life, as for men caring does not make a difference, whether they are employed or not. In addition to this fact women on average earn less than men, especially for women working in higher positions. To improve the situation of women and men the German government has initiated a ‘Gender Mainstreaming Policy’ in 2000 and has taken important legal measures which make it possible to reconcile family-life and gainful employment. For Home Economists there is a need to integrate the gender dimension into a household analytical approach.

  • In this paper I will look into achievement standards which show gender difference. This work is based on the average of percentage of correct answer about items taken in National Assessment of Educational Achievement (2010~2014) at each male and female student of middle school. Achievement standard becomes the basic unit when teachers make study plans as the smallest unit that composes the curriculum. Study plans are expressed concretely according to lesson time numbers, and then lesson time numbers are determined by achievement standards. Therefore, objective informations about gender difference appearing in achievement standards will play an important role in embodiment of programs to obliterate gender difference when teachers make study plans. Also This research is expected to play a role as an indicator in studying on gender difference in mathematics education.

Although there were several tools in Korea, they were revealed having some problems of cultural differences, translation biases, and methodological problems. Methods: A list of 78 items were developed using the existing tools and descriptions from 5 married couples. The items were the typical personality characteristics which were manifested by gender, male or female. And the list contained several items which were the socially desirable personality characteristics. which would be simply used as contextual items. Validity of the 78 items were screened by 18 expert panels with 4 point Likert scale, and 57 items were judged as highly valid from 70% of the experts, which were selected as preliminary items for the tool. Using the preliminary tool which was developed as a 4 point Likert scale, data were collected from 1,127 subjects for item analysis and factor analysis. 53 items were remained, because 4 items whose item-total correlation were lower than 0.2 were excluded by the result of item analysis. Factor analysis was done with the 53 items, and 49 items whose factor loadings were same and higher than 0.4 were remained. 3 factors were identified with eigen value 2.0, and these factors were named as masculinity, femininity, and social desirability. Results and Conclusion: KGRII(Korean Gender Role Identity Inventory) which contained 45 items was developed, with 15 items for 3 factors. The reliability of the tool was very high. Cronbach alpha of the tool was 0.929, and alpha of the subscales were ranged from 0.841 to 0.922.
