  • Superduplex stainless steels are important materials to the oil and gas industry, especially for off-shore production. TIG welding of super duplex stainless steels to obtain the optimal phase balance between austenite and ferrite is mainly achieved by controlling the cooling rate and the weld chemistry. The latter depends on the filler wire chosen and the shielding gas used. If TIG welding of superduplex stainless steels is performed with argon shielding gas only, then nitrogen gets lost from the weld pool, which can result in a ferrite-rich weld metal, with an inferior corrosion resistance than parent metal. In the present study, nitrogen permeation model from the shield gas which gets into the weld metal in DCEN-TIG welding has suggested. This plasma stream model shows characteristics of permeation of nitrogen ions into the molten metal due to the strong physical effect of plasma stream which formed by the arc pressure rather than the permeation of nitrogen ions caused by electric effect.

  • Recently, it has increased that the importance of gas pressure weldment of steel bars in large construction bars. But there has hardly been any studies about it. Therefore we need more research. SD40 steel bar (32mm in diameter) which has been practically used at construction sites are tested about tension, bonding, fatigue, a macro structure and micro structure at foil gitudinal section and hardness to fed out the mechanical property and best welding ranges in some cases of mechanical cut and gas cut before gas pressure welded. It is that a gas-pressure welded zone of steel bar where was cleaned of impurities in way of two-upsetted method is more excellent bending and tension property than the regulation of KD D 0244. Also gas cut bars gained hardness from the heat affected zone so. In conclusion, to improve the weldability of steel bars, it is considered best to clean mechanically cut sutra- faces and then weld them by a method of 2 step upset way.

  • Korea Gas Corporation has operated high pressure gas transmission line of about 600 kilometers and, therefore, a series of repair welding processes are required in order to cope with external defects such as dent, gouge, cracking usually due to mechanical attacks. Most of gas pipelines repair processes are performed after completely venting remaining gas. However, in some case, though it is very unusual, repairs require without venting gas. For instance, this case is that damaged pipeline is remedied with split sleeve by welding. In this paper, in an effort to confirm a safe application of the split sleeve welding, residual stress, strain and temperature distributions are evaluated by computer simulation and experiments. The results obtained are as follows : 1) Computer modelling is supposed to be reasonable because microstructure changes due to welding is simulated coincidently as compare to that of real condition. 2) The maximal temperature on inside surface of pipeline is 50$0^{\circ}C$ for the repair welding process. 3) The amount of residual stress is estimated as the stress corresponding to 0.8% strain. 4) The repair process employed is determined to be technically preferable because of its avoiding cracks and fractures in the course of welding.

  • Bead shape control with gas force process has been developed to overcome the concave back bead in pipe orbital welding. However, It is impossible to make a convex back bead using the existing gas nozzle, because it has high gas-consuming and low gas force. The purpose of this paper, to develop optimum shape of nozzle which to reduce the consumption of gas, maximizing the shield gas force with low cost and high productivity coincide the Green welding. In this paper venturi-type nozzle was compared with existing CP-type nozzle by TIG pulse welding in overhead position. As a result, CP-type occurs the wormholes in the overhead position, but the Venturi-type without the pore and formed a good bead appearance.

  • Magnesium alloy has been known as lightweight material in automobile and electronic industry with aluminum alloy, titanium alloy and plastic material. Friction welding is useful to join different kinds of metals and nonferrous metals they are difficult to be joined by such as gas welding, resistance welding and electronic beam welding. In this study, friction welding was performed to investigate optimization process of Mg alloy with a 20mm diameter solid bar. For that, the orthogonal array $(L_{9}(3^{4}))$ was used that contained four factors and each factor had three levels. Control factors were heating pressure, heating time, upsetting pressure and upsetting time. Also tensile tests were carried out to measure mechanical properties for welded conditions. The levels of heating pressure and upsetting pressure used were 15, 25, 35MPa, and 30, 50, 70MPa, respectively. In addition those of heating time and upsetting time were 0.5, 1, 1.5 sec and 3, 4, 5 sec., respectively, rotating speed of 2000rpm. From the experimental results, optimization condition was estimated as follows; heating pressure=35MPa, upsetting pressure=70MPa, heating time=1.5sec, upsetting time=3sec.

  • Using a fiber laser heat source, an oil pressure sensor was fabricated to measure the pressure in commercial vehicles. A stepping motor was used for the rotational and translational motion in the diaphragms and hardware joining. Laser welding process algorism including shielding gas control and vision system was integrated by using LabVIEW software for the high quality welding and in-line monitoring purpose. For the maximum flexibility in pressure transmission to the pressure sensor, thin sheet metal diaphragm, $25{\sim}50{\mu}m$(SUS-316L), was used and the diaphragms were optimally designed with FEM analysis. The welded samples were cross-sectioned the observation showed that the maximum depth ratio was more than seven times of diaphragms. The maximum welding speed was measured to be as high as 50in/mm by the developed automation mechanism. The fabricated prototypes were tested for the proof pressure, spring constant and sealing. The FEM results of spring constant measurement was as accurate as up to 80% of the design value and the sensor was safely operated up to the nominal pressure of 10bars.

  • PAL(Pohang Accelerator Laboratory) designed and manufactured a 5m-long straight vacuum chamber to adopt U7 undulator that is the first insertion device. Top and bottom plates of the vacuum chamber were made of Al alloy A5083-H321, and welded together by the GTAW welding. The leak rate is less than 1×{TEX}$10^{-10}${/TEX} torr·ℓ/s with negligible welding deformation. The pressure has been maintained below {TEX}$10^{-10}${/TEX} torr after installation. This paper reports the welding process and the method applied to achieve ultimate vacuum performance and t satisfy integrity of welds.

  • A tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding method was used for the bonding of stainless steel. TIG welding using inert gas (He or Ar gas) is a method to prevent oxidation and nitriding of materials and to combine non-ferrous metals. This method has the advantage of obtaining a smooth weld surface. In this study, the welding characteristics of 304 stainless steel welded by TIG welding method were analyzed by using nondestructive technique. Ultrasonic and Acoustic Emission (AE) was applied to evaluate the micro-damage of TIG welded 304 stainless steel. The velocity and damping coefficient of ultrasonic wave showed a slight difference in HAZ, which is the welding part of stainless steel. The AE parameters of average frequency, rise time and event were analyzed for the dynamic behavior of stainless steel during loading. Optimal AE parameters for evaluating the degree of damage to the specimen have been derived. Fractograph and metal structures of 304 stainless steel using SEM and optical microscope were discussed.
