The noise level of the navigation bridge as well as topside of the superstructure is dominated by the exhaust gas noise of the high-powered main engine and generator engine of special purpose vessels. In the case of the noise radiated from the top of the funnel. the exhaust pipe can be fitted with a silencer to reduce the propagated noise level. This paper is prepared based on an experimental performance test results of the silencers for generator-engine exhaust gas noise with consideration of air velocity. Two silencers were examined to check the performance of noise reduction in cases of air velocity 0m/s and 32m/s. In the sound reduction test, 400mm and 600mm diameter pipe ducts equipped with an axial fan were used as exhaust gas pipe system in the actual ship. The test procedure and results are presented in detail.

Exhaust gas recirculation is the well-known and widely used NOx reduction technology for diesel engines. More effective EGR cooler has been developed and applied to diesel engines to meet the reinforced emission regulation. However, the contaminated EGR cooler by diesel exhaust gas reduces the performance of the engine and NOx reduction rate. The buildup of deposits in EGR coolers cause significant degradation in heat transfer performance, often on the order of 20~30%. Deposits also increase pressure drop across coolers and thus may degrade engine efficiency under some operation conditions. In this study, as a solution for this problem, DOC assisted EGR cooler is designed and then investigated to reduce fouling and its impact on cooler performance. A single channel EGR cooler fouling test apparatus and soot particle generator were developed to represent the real EGR cooler and exhaust gas of diesel engine. EGR cooler effectiveness of the case with catalyst of pt 30g/ft3 decreased just up to 5%. This value was 45% less compared to the case without catalyst which decreased up to 9% after 10hours experiments.
This paper proposes a new start-up method for a load commutated inverter (LCI) in a large synchronous gas-turbine generator. The initial rotor position for start-up torque is detected by the proposed initial angle detector, which consists of an integrator and a phase-locked loop. The initial rotor position is accurately detected within 150ms, and the angle difference between the real position and the detected position is less than 1%. The LCI system operates in two modes (forced commutation mode and natural commutation mode) according to operating speed range. The proposed controllers include a forced commutation controller for the low-speed range, a PI speed controller and a PI current controller, where the forced commutation controller is connected to the current controller in parallel. The current controller is modeled by Matlab/Simulink, where a six-pulse delay of the thyristor and a processing delay are considered by using a zero-order hold. The performance of the proposed start-up method is evaluated in Matlab/Psim at standstill and at low speed. To verify the feasibility of the method, a 5kVA LCI system prototype is implemented, and the proposed initial angle detector and the system performance are confirmed by experimental results from standstill to 900rpm.

Noise and vibration was encountered in exhaust duct system which is connected with a gas turbine and a heat recovery steam generator(HRSG) of a cogeneration power plants. Especially, these problems occurred when water was added to the fuel injection to reduce NOx contents of the exhaust gas. Through the cavity mode analysis and measurements, It was concluded that these problems occurred due to the acoustic resonance between the duct cavity mode and the excitation force induced by turbulent gas flow during water injection. To reduce the noise and vibration, optimal baffle plate to change the cavity mode was installed inside of duct and noise levels of about 8 dB(A) are reduced in duct system. The effects of baffle plate and guide vane to the HRSG or inlet duct vibration were also evaluated and it was verified that there is no relation to the resonance phenomena. So, vibration of inlet duct was easily reduced by the reinforcement of structures.

Stoichiometric combustion in spark ignition (SI) engines has an advantage of meeting future stringent emission regulations. However, the drawback of the combustion is a lower thermal efficiency than that of lean burn. In this study, energy losses in a natural gas stoichiometric SI engine generator were analyzed to establish a strategy for improving the generating efficiency (GE). The energy losses were investigated based on dynamometer and load bank experiments. As the intake manifold pressure increased in the dynamometer experiment, the brake thermal efficiency (BTE) increased mainly due to the reduction in the pumping and mechanical losses. In the load bank experiment, the generating power and GE increased with the increased intake manifold pressure. The generating power and GE were lower than the brake power and BTE due to the cooling fan power and the losses in the generator.

Effects of combustion chamber design on combustion stability characteristics of a full-scale gas generator were studied experimentally. Thirty seven double-swirl injectors with recess number of 1.5 were distributed in the injector head, which significantly influences combustion performance. The characteristics of combustion stability were inspected by the parametric variations such as changing length and diameter of the combustion chamber and installing a turbulence ring. The experimental result shows that as the effective length of the combustion chamber decreased, an instability frequency took place in a high-frequency region, and the amplitude of the dynamic pressure generally diminished and could be reduced to the unharmful level. However, the dynamic pressure fluctuation in the region of longitudinal resonant frequency could not be suppressed perfectly.

LES analysis was conducted with in-house CFD code to investigate the turbulence evolution and interaction due to turbulence ring and splash plate in the gas generator. The calculation results show that the installation of turbulence ring can introduce additional turbulences and significantly improve turbulent mixing in the downstream flow. However, the addition of splash plate in the downstream of TR(Turbulence Ring) brings totally different shape of perturbation energy and enstrophy distribution into turbulent mixing. This enhancement can be done by the formation of the intensively strong vorticity and mixing behind the plate. Pressure drop was found to be a reasonable level of about 1% or less of initial pressure in all calculation cases. Also, calculation results revealed that the variation of shape and intrusion length of TR did not greatly affect the characteristics of turbulent mixing in the chamber. Even though the effect of installation location of splash plate on the turbulent mixing was not investigated yet, calculation results conclude the addition of splash plate leads to the increase in turbulent mixing with an acceptable pressure drop.

The rocket grade hydrogen peroxide has been widely used as a monopropellant in propulsion systems. In the present paper, we described an experimental study of a catalytic reactor that employs two stage catalyst beds to enhance the low temperature performance of the reactor. $K_2MnO_4$ was chosen as the catalyst for the initial stage of the reactor bed for its superior behavior in the low temperature regime. LSC was used for the catalyst of the second stage of the reactor. The gas generator with combined catalyst beds was built and tested to exhibit high decomposition efficiency over 90% and successful cold-start characteristics.

A system design has been conducted of the liquid rocket engine for Korean launch vehicle (KSLV-II, Korea Space Launch Vehicle II). The present turbopump-fed liquid rocket engine of vacuum thrust 76 ton and vacuum specific impulse 297 sec adopts gas generator cycle. The combustion pressure of the regeneratively cooled combustor is 60 bar. The propellant is LOx/kerosene. The engine is started by pyrostarter and the combustor is ignited by TEA (TriEthylAluminium). The engine system performance and the subsystems performance requirements are given through energy balance analysis. The combustion pressure, specific impulse and the engine mass are analyzed to be reasonable comparing with the published data. The startup analysis method which will be used in the future has been validated against the turbopump-gas generator coupled test. The tuning method for performance variation of the engine which is not actively controled has been prepared by mode analysis and performance deviation analysis.

The combustion characteristics of Boron-beads to improve the energy density of gas generator has been investigated in accordance with diameter of beads and their composition. In this paper, electrically heated tungsten sheet and visualized furnace are applied to measure ignition temperature and burning time of bead respectively. The results proposes ignition temperature between 720~800 K and burning time proportional to bead diameter. Also a ignition delay of boron particle is detected through the temperature and radiation intensity measurements.
