  • The PLL equivalent augmented system incorporated with state feedback is proposed in this paper. The optimal value of filter time constant of loop filter in the phase-locked loop control system and the optimal state feedback gain designed by using linear quadratic regulator approach are derived. This approach allows the PLL control system to employ the large value of the phase-frequency gain $K_d$ and voltage control oscillator gain $K_o$. In designing, the structure of phase-locked loop control system will be rearranged to be a phase-locked loop equivalent augmented system by including the structure of loop filter into the process and by considering the voltage control oscillator as an additional integrator. The designed controller consisting of state feedback gain matrix K and integral gain $k_1$ is an optimal controller. The integral gain $k_1$ related to weighting matrices q and R will be an optimal value for assigning the filter time constant of loop filter. The experimental results in controlling the second-order lag pressure process using two types of loop filters show that the system response is fast without steady-state error, the output disturbance effect rejection is fast and the tracking to step changes is good.

  • A variable gain low noise amplifier (VG-LNA) implemented in TSMC 0.18 um process is presented. This VG-LNA is designed of two stage amplifier, and its gain is controlled by the shunt feedback loop composed of a gain control transistor (GCT) and a coupling capacitor in second stage. The channel resistance of GCT in the shunt feedback loop influences the input and output stages of a second stage by the Miller effect. Total gain of the proposed VG-LNA is changed by two factors, the load impedance reduction and the interstage mismatch by controlling the channel resistance of the GCT. Consequently, by adding a shunt feedback with a gain control transistor, this proposed VG-LNA achieves both wide gain tuning range of 37 dB and continuous gain control simultaneously.

  • In this paper, we design a low noise amplifier to support ka-band satellite communication systems using 65-nm RFCMOS process. The proposed low noise amplifier is designed with high-gain mode and low-gain mode, and is designed to control the gain according to the magnitude of the input signal. In order to reduce the power consumption, the supply voltage of the entire circuit is limited to 1 V or less. We proposed the gain control circuit that consists of the inverter structure. The 3D EM simulator is used to reduce the size of the circuit. The size of the designed amplifier including pad is $0.33mm^2$. The fabricated amplifier has a -7 dB gain control range in 3 dB bandwidth and the reflection coefficient is less than -6 dB in high gain mode and less than -15 dB in low gain mode.

  • In this paper, we propose the Digital Automatic Gain Controller for IEEE 802.11a High-speed Physical Layer in the 5 GHz Band. The input gain is estimated by calculating the energy of the training symbol that is a synchronizing signal. The renewal gain is calculated by comparing the estimated gain with the ideal gain. The renewal gain is converted into the controlled voltage for GCA to reduce or amplify the input signals. We used a piecewise-linear approximation to reduce the hardware size. The gain control is performed seven times to provide more accurate gain control. The proposed automatic gain controller is designed with VHDL and verified by using the Xilinx FPGA.

  • The purpose of this paper is a study on getting proper gain set of PID controller which satisfies multi-performance specifications of the control system. The multi-objective optimization method is introduced to evaluate specifications, and the genetic algorithm is used as an optimal problem solver. To enhance the performance of genetic algorithm itself, adaptive technique is included. According to the proposed method in this paper, finding suitable gain set can be more easily accomplishable than manual gain seeking and tuning.

  • A simple experimental method to design gain-flattened erbium-doped fiber amplifier is proposed and demonstrated based on the two linear relations between the output power and the pump power, and between the gain and the length of the eribium-doped fiber at the gain flattened state. The spectral gain variation of the eribium-doped fiber amplifiber constructed by this method was less than 0.4 dB over 12 nm (1,545~1,557nm) wavelength region. The gain flatness is also controlled within 0.4 dB over the input power range of -30~-15dBm/ch through the feedback control utilizing the amplified spontaneous emission power in the 1,530 nm region.

  • This paper focuses on discrete-time sliding mode control with SIIM fuzzy adaptive switching gain. The adaptive switching gain is calculated using the simplified indirect inference fuzzy logic. Two fuzzy inputs are the normal distance from the present state trajectory to the switching function and the distance from the present state trajectory to the equilibrium state. The fuzzy output $f_{out}$(k) out f k is used to adjust the speed the adaptation law depending on the location of the state trajectory. The simulation results showed that the proposed method had no chattering in case of uncertain parameter without disturbance. Moreover the convergent rate of the switching gain was faster and more stable even in case of disturbance.

  • Input devices of wearable computer are difficult to use, so a lot of alternative pointing devices have been considered in recent years. In order to resolve this problem, this paper proposed a dynamic gain control method which is able to improve the performance of wearable pointing device and showed an experimental result comparing this method with conventional method. Also the effects of methods were compared in terms of device (wearable and desktop). The result of calculating throughputs(index of performance) by Fitts' law showed that the pointing performance in dynamic gain condition was improved 1.4 times more than normal gain.

  • This paper deals with the Gain Control in the processing of the underwater acoustic image obtained from side scan sonar(SSS) system. At first, this paper describes the principles of SSS that is a surveying equipment for the underground of the rivers or dams as well as sea floor. Then this paper analyzes the cause and effects of the time varying intensity from the view point of transmission loss and beam pattern. At last, the time varying gain filter that is adopted by the towfish is introduced.

  • A modified Kohonen's simple Competitive Learning(SCL) algorithm which has binary reinforcement function and a constant adaptation gain is proposed. In contrast to the time-varing adaptation gain of the original Kohonen's SCL algorithm, the proposed algorithm uses a constant adaptation gain, and adds a binary reinforcement function in order to compensate for the lowered learning ability of SCL due to the constant adaptation gain. Since the proposed algorithm does not have the complicated multiplication, it's digital hardware implementation is much easier than one of the original SCL.
