This study aimed to investigate the differences on emotions, physical symptoms, future perspectives by perceived air pollution. Sixty-one university students were randomly allocated either to air pollution group (n = 30) or clean air group (n = 31). Participants watched a news video clip of a polluted city or a clean city according to their condition and were asked to imagine as if they were living in the city. Results showed that air pollution group reported increased depression, anxiety, anger and physical symptoms after the exposure. Meanwhile, clean air group showed no significant changes or decrease of them. In addition, air pollution group reported restrained future time perspectives and decreased plan of outdoor activities, while clean air group did not report significant changes after the exposure.

Current progress in the various fields of epidemiologic study in Korea calls for the increased participation of the trained epidemiologists. Expanding epidemiologic concepts to the wide spectrum of health and medical programs, active participation to the diversified health service fields and strengthening the role of epidemiology in the social and political decision making should be included in the perspectives of epidemiology in Korea. The future of epidemiology is certainly depend on the efforts of present epidemologists.

  • Laparoscopic gastrectomy has been widely accepted especially in patients with early-stage gastric cancer. However, the safety and oncologic validity of laparoscopic gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer are still being debated. Since the late 90s', we have been engaged in developing a stable and robust methodology of laparoscopic radical gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer, and have established laparoscopic distinctive technique for suprapancreatic lymph node dissection, namely the outermost layer-oriented medial approach. In this article, We present the development history of this method, and current status and future perspectives of laparoscopic gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer based on our experience and a review of the literature.

  • Currently, computer-aided technology becomes one of main issues in clinical dentistry. About 25 years ago, the development of dental CAD/CAM systems for the fabrication of crowns and fixed partial dentures leads to be able to fabricate complete denture today. The fabrication of milled complete denture prostheses with digital scanning technology may decrease the number of patient appointments. However, the precise tooth arrangement and evaluation by patient is not promising relatively. The purpose of this review was to analyze the existing literature on computer aided technology for fabricating complete denture with historical background, current status, and future perspectives. In addition, two available commercial systems were introduced.

  • 존 켈리 회장은 7월 12일 경주시 힐튼호텔에서 열린 '원자력 안전 및 해체산업 육성 국제 포럼'에 참석하여 'Perspectives on the Future of Nuclear Power in the United States'를 주제로 특별강연을 했다.

  • Lung cancer remains the most common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Although there are many possible treatments, including targeted therapies such as epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors and anaplastic lymphoma kinase inhibitors, new therapeutic strategies are needed to improve clinical outcomes. Immunotherapy through the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors has provided one of the most important breakthroughs in the management of solid tumors, including lung cancers, and has shown promising results in numerous clinical trials. This review will present the current status of immunotherapy for lung cancer and future perspectives on these treatments.

  • Neuroendoscopic surgery is performed because it causes minimal damage to normal structures, carries a lower rate of complications, and achieves excellent outcomes. Surgeons using an endoscope and related instruments can perform complex operations through very small incisions, which is especially useful for minimally invasive procedures for the brain and spine. Neuroendoscopic surgery is now performed in cases of obstructive hydrocephalus, various intraventricular lesions, hypothalamic hamartomas, craniosynostosis, skull base tumors, and spinal lesions. This review discusses the brief history of neuroendoscopy and the current state and future perspectives of endoscopic surgery.

  • Botulinum toxins are neurotoxic modular proteins composed of a heavy chain and a light chain connected by a disulfide bond and are produced by Clostridium botulinum. Although lethally toxic, botulinum toxin in low doses is clinically effective in numerous medical conditions, including muscle spasticity, strabismus, hyperactive urinary bladder, excessive sweating, and migraine. Globally, several companies are now producing products containing botulinum toxin for medical and cosmetic purposes, including the reduction of facial wrinkles. To test the efficacy and toxicity of botulinum toxin, animal tests have been solely and widely used, resulting in the inevitable sacrifice of hundreds of animals. Hence, alternative methods are urgently required to replace animals in botulinum toxin testing. Here, the various alternative methods developed to test the toxicity and efficacy of botulinum toxins have been briefly reviewed and future perspectives have been detailed.

  • 'Enhanced Cooperation', which was the mandate of Tunis Agenda in 2005, was the product of political compromise after failing to reach a consensus on global internet governance mechanism. In 2012, UN General Assembly decided to establish CSTD 'Working Group on Enhanced Cooperation (WGEC)' to find out what could and should be done to implement the Tunis Agenda. After a first meeting, WGEC sent out a questionnaire to collect extensive opinions from internet communities. Replies to the questionnaire showed a broad spectrum of perspectives on the problem of existing internet governance arrangement and how to improve it. This article analysed different perspectives, based on replies, especially regarding the concept and implementation of the Tunis Agenda, public policy issue and possible mechanisms, and the role of stakeholders including government. The recommendation of WGEC will be submitted to UN GA passing through CSTD and ECOSOC, in 2014, which is expected to have great impact on the future of internet governance.
