By activity-guided fractionation, gliotoxin was isolated as an antibacterial metabolite of the fungus Penicillium decumbens which was derived from the jellyfish Nemopilema nomurai. Gliotoxin was further evaluated for antibacterial activity against several piscine and human MDR (multidrug resistance) pathogens. Gliotoxin showed significant antibacterial activity against Gram-positive piscine pathogens such as Streptococcus iniae FP5228, Streptococcus iniae FP3187, Streptococcus parauberis FP3287, Streptococcus parauberis SPOF3K, S. parauberis KSP28, and Lactococcus garvieae FP5245. Gliotoxin showed strong activity especially against S. parauberis SPOF3K and S. iniae FP5228, which are resistant to oxytetracycline. It is noteworthy that gliotoxin effectively suppressed streptococci which are the major pathogens for piscine infection and mortality in aquaculture industry. Gliotoxin also showed strong antibacterial activity against multidrug- resistant human pathogens (MDR) including Enterococcus faecium 5270 and MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) 3089.
Acetone extracts of 301 strains of marine-derived fungus were tested for antimicrobial activity against three strains of bacteria. The bacteria consisted of three pathogens, Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. Aureus, and multidrug-resistant S. aureus. The acetone extracts of 10 strains (MFA117, MFA130, MFA134, MFA206, MFA217, MFA268, MFA277, MFA291, MFA292, MFA301) showed strong activity, inhibiting 100% of the bacterial growth. These antimicrobial active strains were cultlued in SWS medium on a 1 L scale and the resulting broth and mycelium were extracted to afford mycelium extract (000M) and broth extract (000B), respectively. Antimicrobial activity for all extracts has been tested as the results, the mycelium extract of one strain (217M) and the broth extracts of 9 strains (117B,130B, 134B, 206B, 268B, 277B, 291B, 292B, 301B) exhibited relatively high levels of activity at minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of $500-125\;{\mu}g/mL$ range. Among them, the extracts, 277B, 291B, 292B and 301B showed the most significant antimicrobial activity with $IC_{50}$ values of $125\;{\mu}g/mL$.

Stems and pods of hyacinth bean cultivated in a farmer's field in Gazipur District, Bangladesh, were found rotted in nearly 5% hyacinth bean plants. A fungus having fluffy mycelium and large sclerotia was isolated from affected tissues. Combined results of morphological, molecular and pathological analyses identified the fungus as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib) de Bary. Inoculating the fungus on healthy hyacinth bean plants and pods reproduced the symptoms previously observed in the field. The three isolates obtained from naturally infected plants were cross inoculated in hyacinth bean, okra and African-American marigold and they were pathogenic to these hosts. The optimum temperature and pH for its growth were $20^{\circ}C$ and pH 5.0, respectively. Sclerotial development was favored at pH 5.0. Sucrose and mannitol were the best carbon sources to support hyphal growth, while glucose was the most favourable for sclerotial development. The hyacinth bean genotypes, HB-82 (Rupban Sheem) and HB-102 were found highly resistant, while HB-94 (Ashina) was moderate resistant to the fungus. Finally, S. sclerotiorum was sensitive to Bavistin, Dithane M-45 and Rovral fungicides and Ca in the form of $CaCl_2$. This observation could possibly aid in eliminating field loss in hyacinth bean caused by an emerging pathogenic fungus S. sclerotiorum.
Dioxopiperazine alkaloids, 12R,13S-dihydroxyfumitremorgin C (1), fumitremorgin C (2), and brevianamide F (3), were isolated from the marine-derived fungus Pseudallescheria, and the absolute stereostructures of compounds 1 - 3 were elucidated on the basis of chemical and physicochemical evidence. Compounds 1 - 3 showed an antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus, and multidrug-resistant S. aureus. The MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) values of compounds 1 - 3 were 125 ${\mu}g/mL$ for all strains.
For the selection and breeding of chestnut varieties resistant to the chestnut blight fungus Cryphonectria parasitica, disease resistance and susceptibility of 28 varieties widely planted and growing in Korea were evaluated by artificial inoculation of a pathogenic fungus. For this experiment, a typical virulent strain (KCPC-19) was selected. Artificial inoculation was conducted into all varieties by using two different materials and methods, i.e., bark and wood tissue sections in the laboratory and living trees in the field. In the bark and wood tissue section method, the size of necrotic area and canker development on chestnut varieties were examined and compared 4 days after inoculation. There were wide variations of chestnut varieties in disease resistance and susceptibility against chestnut blight fungus, but 3 varieties, Daebo!, Ishizuchi, and Sandae, were shown to be relatively resistant to the disease with the necrotic area of 0.95-1.03 cm2, while Arima was the most susceptible with the size of 2.0 cm2. In the living tree inoculation examined 5 weeks after inoculation, 3 varieties, Daebo, Ishizuchi, and Riheiguri, showed the higher resistance, but Tono 2 did the highest susceptibility among tested varieties.

Benomyl-resistant mutants of entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae were isolated and their physiological characteristics were investigated. These militants were obtained spontaneously or by UV irradiation in benomyl-treated media. Four spontaneous (S-2, S-11, S-18, S-19) and four UV-induced (UV-4, UV-5, UV-19, UV-24) mutants, which grow stably and normally were selected. No significant differences in conidia or hyphal shape, conidia viability, mycelial biomass, or virulent to the diamondback moth were observed between the wild type and their mutants. But differently from the mycelial growth of other benomyl-resistant mutants which was slower than that of the wild type on a modified Czapek-Dox, SDAY, $4\%$ chitin, or $1\%$ skim milk medium, that in the spontaneous mutants, S-18 and S-19, did not show any difference from the wild type. Especially, S-18 and S-19 grew well at benomyl concentrations up to 50 times or higher than that which inhibits wild type proliferation. These results suggested that S-18 and S-19 could potentially be used with the fungicide, benomyl.

Twenty-seven monogenic rice lines harboring major resistant gene for blast were screened to analyze their resistance spectrum to Korean blast fungus population using 190 isolates collected from 1985 to 2002. Especially, the monogenic line containing Pi-9 gene was screened using 320 isolates. Based on the monogenic lines-blast isolate interactions, the 27 rice lines were classified into 9 groups. The chinese rice cultivar LTH showed susceptible to all the tested isolates. Those lines IRBLz-Fu, ERBL5-M and IRBL9-W harboring Pi-z, Pi-5, and Pi-9, respectively showed broader spectrum of resistance than those rice lines having Pi-19, Pi-7 etc. Interestingly, the Pi-9 gene(IRBL9-W) showed resistance to most isolates collected before 2000, but it showed susceptible reactions to 5% and 20% of blast fungus population in 2001 and 2002, respectively. Population of virulent isolates to Pi-ta, Pi-b, and Pi-7 also were increased in 2002 compared to those before 2000.
Bioassay-guided fractionation of an organic extract of the broth from the marine-derived fungus of the genus Aspergillus led to the isolation of the polyketides, (+)-epoxydon (1), (+)-epoxydon monoacetate (2), gentisyl alcohol (3), 3-chlorogentisyl alcohol (4), and methylhydroquinone (5). Compounds 1-5 showed a potent antibacterial activity against the methicillin-resistant and multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA and MDRSA) with MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) values of 12.5, 12.5, 12.5, 50.0, and $6.2\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Compounds 1-4 also exhibited a significant radical scavenging activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) with $IC_{50}$ values of 6.0, 15.0, 7.0, and $1.0\;{\mu}M$, respectively.
The microbial transformation of anthranilic acid (1) by the marine-mudflat-derived fungus Thielavia sp. produced an antibacterial polycyclic quinazoline alkaloid, thielaviazoline (2). The stereostructure of the metabolite was assigned based on detailed spectroscopic data analyses including comparison of the NMR ($^1H$ and $^{13}C$) data with those of reported compound (2). Compound 2 displayed in vitro antimicrobial activity against methicillin-resistant and multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA and MDRSA), with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 6.25 and $12.5{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Compound 2 also showed potent radical-scavenging activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) with an $IC_{50}$ of $11{\mu}M$, which was more active than the positive control, L-ascorbic acid ($IC_{50}$, $20.0{\mu}M$).
