Research and Development of Marine Bio-Organisms - Introduction and Its prospect -

  • A large number of natural products were worldwidely discovered from maine organisms. There are many secondary metabolites produced by maine organisms which showed very strong bio-activities and distinct bio-active mechanisms. In korea, about 350 secondary metabolites including more than 280 novel compounds have been isolated and structually defined. Many researches for developing products such as cosmetics, functional food materials, anti-fouling substances are being performed using distinct activities of marine organisms. Although the research on marine natural products has been remained at its initial or developing stage of drug development, significant progress has been made for isolation, structure determination and bioassay of secondary metabolites.

  • Functionalized organic polymers have been used as supports for heterogenized homogeneous catalytic process[1]. Sprcific advantages of using these resins as support reagents have been reviewed[2-4]. These include: -ease of by-product separation from the main reaction product usuallyby simple filtration. -prevention of intermolecular reaction of reactive species or functional groups by simulating high dilution conditions[5]. -utility of the "fish-hook" principle in which a minor component in fished out of a large excess substrate by the insoluble polymer[6]. -the possibility of reusing recovered reagents as well as eliminating the use of volatile or noxious substances[7]. Catalysis by ion-exchange membranes is perhaps one of the latest examples of the use of a polymer-supported species. Conceptually, catalysts on membrane supports offer several possible advantages over traditional powder type systems. They are: (1) Membranes immobilize the catalyst, preventing agglomeration. (2) Filtration is unnecessary for the catalyst separation and so complete catalyst recovery is facilitated. (3) Catalytyic and separation processes can be combined, allowing membrane supported catalysts for the continous flow reactors. reactors.

텔레비전 식품 광고에 관한 고찰 (Television Food Advertisement: Review and Recommendation)

  • Television food advertisement is the most effective way to reach to consumers with food and nutritional informations and affect their eating behavior. Therefore, 218 food commercials were reviewed using video tapes and copies to know the present food product trends, food messages they transmit and define misleading food commercials. Messages were focused on the benefit of health promoting substances they contain, especially for functional food components, fortified nutrients, food safety focused on food additives, convenience and differentiation with other products. Overnutrition on specific nutrients could be expected due to nutrient fortified products and misleading of food commercials were also noted. Regarding trends, guidelines provided by television broadcasting company shoud be fortified in the connection of Food Hygine Law and supervision committe should reinforce the food company to summit data for the approval of their advertisement claims. Nutrition educational spot program shoud be produced and broadcasted for the public to protect the consumer from food faddism in near future.

Monacolin K 강화 홍국쌀 생산을 위한 균주 및 특성 연구 (Study on Monascus Strains and Characteristic for Manufacturing Red Yeast Rice with High Production of Monacolin K)

  • 혈중 콜레스테롤 저하작용이 있는 monacolin K 고함유 홍국쌀 생산을 위해 2종의 홍국 균주와 7종의 쌀 품종을 사용하여 홍국쌀을 생산하였다. 생산된 홍국쌀의 monacolin K 함량을 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 발효된 홍국쌀의 색은 균주에 비해 품종에 따라 차이가 크게 나는 경향이었으며, 상주찰벼가 붉은 색소 함량이 높았지만, monacolin K 생산량과 붉은 색소의 정도가 상관관계가 크다고 판단할 수 없다. 2. 홍국추출물을 UPLC로 이용하여 활성형 monacolin K와 비활성형 monacolin K가 분리 되었고, LC-MS/MS로 분자량을 확인한 결과, 활성형과 비활성형 monacolin K의 선구이온(precursor ion)은 각각 m/z 421, 405였고, 생성이온(product ion) 중 활성형은 m/z 101,319, 비활성형은 m/z 199, 285의 분자량을 확인하였다. 3. M. ruber KCTC6122과 M. ruber KCCM60141 균주를 이용하여 쌀 품종별로 생산한 홍국쌀의 monacolin K 함량을 분석한 결과, 상주찰벼가 각각 47.24, 117.03ppm으로 가장 많은 함량을 나타내었다. 4. 7종의 품종을 비교했을 때, M. ruber KCCM60141이 KCTC6122과 비교하여 monacolin K 생산량이 더 높은 균주이고, 그 중 상주찰벼를 이용하는 것이 홍국쌀 생산에 적절한 품종 선택이라고 판단된다.

  • 최근 암에 의한 사망률이 증가하고, 암 치료를 위한 화학적 항암제의 부작용이 지속적으로 대두됨에 따라 암 예방뿐 아니라, 항암제의 부작용을 감소시키면서 효과는 유지시킬 수 있는 방법이 필요하다. 이를 위해 최근 천연물과 항암제의 병용투여법이 주목 받고 있으며, 보다 안전하고 효과적인 천연물질의 개발이 요구된다. 최근 복분자딸기의 항산화, 항암, 항염 등 다양한 생리활성이 부각되면서 소비가 지속적으로 증가하고 있다. 또한 이러한 생리활성을 활용하여 식품, 주류, 화장품과 의약품과 같은 분야에서 복분자딸기를 이용한 다양한 상품이 개발되고 있다. 따라서 이 고찰은 복분자딸기의 항암 및 항염증 효능에 대한 연구결과와 복분자딸기의 특허동향을 정리하였다. 향후 복분자 딸기의 열매뿐 아니라, 줄기, 잎 등 다양한 부위를 활용한 천연유래 기능성 소재 개발 및 복분자딸기의 다양한 응용가능성을 모색하기 위한 더 많은 연구가 이루어져야 할 것으로 여겨진다.

복분자(Rubus coreanus Miquel) 와인의 에틸아세테이트층으로부터 저분자 페놀성 항산화 화합물의 단리·동정 (Isolation and Identification of Low Molecular Phenolic Antioxidants from Ethylacetate Layer of Korean Black Raspberry (Rubus coreanus Miquel) Wine)

  • 복분자 와인은 복분자 열매를 발효ㆍ숙성시켜 제조하기 때문에 그들 양자 간의 성분에는 차이가 있을 것으로 추측되었다. 그러나 복분자 와인의 음용률이 높음에도 불구하고 복분자 와인 중에 함유된 성분들에 관한 체계적인 연구는 거의 전무한 실정이다. 그래서 먼저 복분자 와인 중에 함유되어 있는 성분들의 chemical profile의 검토를 위해 항산화 활성에 초점을 맞추어 화합물의 단리ㆍ구조해석에 착수하였다. 복분자 와인 11 L(신선 복분자 열매 15.7 kg 상당량)의 농축액(928.3 g)을 용매분획한 후 얻어진 EtOAc층(20 g/56.2 g)을 대상으로 각종 column chromatography 및 HPLC를 행하여 5종의 항산화 활성 화합물을 단리하였다. 그들을 대상으로 $^1H$-NMR 분석 및 TMS 유도체화 후 GCMS 분석을 행한 결과, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid(1, 0.1 mg), 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid(2, 0.3 mg), 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-phenol(3, 0.6 mg), pyrocatechol(4, 0.3 mg), 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid ethyl ester(5, 0.6 mg)로 동정하였다. 화합물 1과 2는 복분자 열매중에 존재함이 보고되어 있으나 화합물 3-5는 복분자 열매로부터 그 존재가 보고되어진 바 없으며, 이들 5종의 화합물 모두가 복분자 와인으로부터 동정되어진 것 또한 처음이다.

Banana Peel: A Green Solution for Metal Removal from Contaminated Waters

  • BACKGROUND: Certain crop-based waste materials have been recognized as cost-effective and highly efficient adsorbents for removal and recovery of different kind of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. The ability is strongly attributed to the carboxyl functional group of some pectin substances such as galacturonic acid often found in fruit peels. The present manuscript was aimed at assessing the potential applicability of banana peel for metal removal from contaminated waters. METHODS AND RESULTS: As revealed by laboratory investigations, banana peel contains pectin (10-21%), lignin (6-12%), cellulose (7.6-9.6%), and hemicelluloses (6.4-9.4%). The pectin extraction is reported to have glucose, galactose, arabinose, rhamnose, xylose, and galactouroninc acid. Several studies conducted under different conditions proved that banana peel is capable of adsorbing 5.71, 2.55, 28.00, 6.88, 7.97, and 5.80 mg/g of $Cd^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$, and $Zn^{2+}$, respectively, from aqueous solutions. Adsorption capacity is, however, dependent upon several factors including solution pH, dose of adsorbent and metal concentration, contact time and shaking speed. CONCLUSION(S): Since the annual world production of banana exceeds 100 million tons, about 40 million tons of banana peel (40% of total weight of the fresh fruit) remains vastly unused. Exploring a sound technology with banana peel would therefore, not only address the much needed sustainable tool for cleaning contaminated waters, but of course bring an additional value to the banana industry worldwide.

  • 배는 전세계적으로 많이 소모되고 있는 과일이다. 일반적으로 배는 아시아 배와 유럽 배로 분류된다. 배는 다양한 생리활성 물질을 보유하는 것으로 알려져 있으며 이에 대한 기능성 연구가 계속 되어져 진행되고 있다. 따라서 본 종설에서는 지금까지 알려진 배의 생리활성 물질들의 개요 및 다양한 질병들에 대한 예방효과에 대해서 알아보고자 하였다.

A Design for Summer Safety Shoes for Agricultural Work Using a Survey

  • Objective: This study aimed to find good design for summer functional farm shoes under the agricultural environment and working characteristics, which can help safe farm work and further promote the efficiency of working. Background: Most accidents at farms were overturn accidents caused by slipping or falling, and it was found that the main factors which caused the overturn accidents were inappropriate work shoes for the working conditions. These inappropriate work shoes often cause overturn accidents in the rural areas with steep paths. Method: A survey on work shoes was conducted with 174 farmers, and the outcome of this survey was used to find problems of work shoes and improvement ideas for the design of work shoes which can be used at farms. Results: Regarding the form of farm shoes, the ankle height was set at 6 inches to prevent the bending of the ankle and the inflow of foreign substances. The size and groove of the pattern of the outsole were extended to prevent catching of foreign substances. In the upper part, polyurethane and cordura were used in combination to secure air permeability, which was pointed out as the reason for the discomfort during the work wearing existing work shoes. Conclusion: Since farmers felt discomfort with the shoes which they were currently wearing, this study suggested a design of farm shoes by analyzing the important matters of the work shoes in development in order to improve such discomfort. Application: This study can help develop farm shoes that would practically ease farmers' burden of working at farm worksites and keep them safe.

Anti-Oxidant and Anti-Adipogenic Effects of Ethanol Extracts from Wheat Germ and Wheat Germ Fermented with Aspergillus oryzae

  • Most of the wheat germ in cereal grains is removed during the milling process. Various physiological effects have been reported for bioactive substances in wheat germ such as phenolic acids and flavonoids. In this study, the antioxidant and anti-adipogenic effects of ethanol extracts from wheat germ (WGE) and wheat germ fermented with Aspergillus oryzae (F-WGE) were investigated in HepG2 and 3T3-L1 cells. The anti-oxidant activity of F-WGE was demonstrated by a dose-dependent increase in the enhanced scavenging capacity of hydroxyl radicals and $Cu^{2+}$-chelating activity compared to WGE. WGE and F-WGE treatment at doses between 10 and $400{\mu}g/mL$ did not affect the viability of HepG2 and 3T3-L1 cells. Intracellular ROS levels from $Cu^{2+}$-induced oxidative stress were significantly decreased by F-WGE treatment in HepG2 cells compared to WGE. Lipid accumulation was increased in 3T3-L1 adipocytes by $100{\mu}M$ $Fe^{2+}$ treatment, but the accumulation was strongly inhibited by $100{\mu}g/mL$ of WGE and F-WGE treatment. These results suggest that changes in bioactive substances during the fermentation of wheat germ can potentiate scavenging activities against transition metal-induced oxidative stress and lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Therefore, we propose that F-WGE is a novel food materials and provided scientific evidences for its efficacy in the development of functional foods.
