  • In this paper, we investigate the superstability for the p-power-radical sine functional equation $$f\(\sqrt[p]{\frac{x^p+y^p}{2}}\)^2-f\(\sqrt[p]{\frac{x^p-y^p}{2}}\)^2=f(x)f(y)$$ from an approximation of the p-power-radical functional equation: $$f(\sqrt[p]{x^p+y^p})-f(\sqrt[p]{x^p-y^p})={\lambda}g(x)h(y),$$ where p is an odd positive integer and f, g, h are complex valued functions. Furthermore, the obtained results are extended to Banach algebras.

  • In this paper, we solve and investigate the superstability of the p-radical functional equations $$f(\sqrt[p]{x^p+y^p})-f(\sqrt[p]{x^p-y^p})={\lambda}f(x)g(y),\\f(\sqrt[p]{x^p+y^p})-f(\sqrt[p]{x^p-y^p})={\lambda}g(x)f(y),$$ which is related to the trigonometric(Kim's type) functional equations, where p is an odd positive integer and f is a complex valued function. Furthermore, the results are extended to Banach algebras.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the consumption of health functional foods according to age group. We surveyed 300 subjects with quota sampling aged 10 to 50 and over. The rate of consumption of health functional foods by users was substantial (52.7%). Consumers of health functional foods showed higher scores for interest in health (3.97 vs 3.49, P<0.001) and knowledge of health functional foods (3.79 vs 3.30, P<0.001) than non-consumers of health functional foods. Regarding consumers of health functional foods, the number (P<0.01) and types (P<0.05) of health functional foods, reasons for taking (P<0.05), motivations for buying (P<0.05), periods of taking (P<0.001), cost per month (P<0.01), observance of instruction (P<0.01), and effectiveness (P<0.01) were significantly different according to age group. For non-consumers of health functional foods, reasons for not-taking (P<0.01) and types of health functional foods to be planned (P<0.001) were different according to age group. For consumers and non-consumers, problems (P<0.01) andimprovements (P<0.001) for health functional foods showed significant differences according to age group. The majority of subjects (85.4%) answered that heath functional foods had no side-effects. Reported side effects were inappetence (6.6%), constipation (2.6%), and headache (2.0%). In conclusion, differentiated strategies and specialized education programs according to age group might be needed for promoting adequate consumption and preventing side-effects of health functional foods.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the relation between functional limitation, functional disability and back pain during pregnancy. Data was collected by interview or self-report from 66 pregnant women between the gestational ages of 17 and 22 weeks who had experienced back pain from February 17 through July 28, 2001. The results of this study are as follows; 1. The prevalent mean week of back pain starting during pregnancy was 12.8. The mean pain intensity scores on the VAS during the past week and now were 5.6 and 3.7. The mean score on the functional limitations was 38.9. The mean score on the functional disability was 19.7. 2. The pain intensity on the past week was correlated with the pain intensity now (r=.339, p<0.01) and the functional limitations (r=.251, p<0.05). The pain intensity now was correlated with the functional limitations (r=.295, p<0.05) and the functional disability (r=.429, p<0.01). The functional limitations was correlated with the functional disability (r=.229, p<0.01). The higher pain intensity was the more functional limitation and functional disability occurred. 3. There was a statistically significant correlation between the pain intensity now and the type of housing (t=-2.051, p=.045), and back pain history before pregnancy (t=-2.429 p=.003). 4. There was a statistically significant correlation between the functional limitation and income (F=2.803, p=.047) and back pain history before pregnancy (t=-3.225, p=.002). There was a statistically significant correlation between the functional disability and back pain history before pregnancy (t=-3.058 p=.003). In conclusion, we found that a history of back pain was an important factor when predicting back pain and functional disability and limitation during pregnancy. The nurse and the prenatal educator should detect risk factors of back pain early in pregnancy and manage continuously though pregnancy.

  • In this paper, we investigate the transferred superstability for the p-radical sine functional equation $$f\(\sqrt[p]{\frac{x^p+y^p}{2}}\)^2-f\(\sqrt[p]{\frac{x^p-y^p}{2}}\)^2=f(x)f(y)$$ from the p-radical functional equations: $$f({\sqrt[p]{x^p+y^p}})+f({\sqrt[p]{x^p-y^p}})={\lambda}g(x)g(y),\;\\f({\sqrt[p]{x^p+y^p}})+f({\sqrt[p]{x^p-y^p}})={\lambda}g(x)h(y),$$ where p is an odd positive integer, λ is a positive real number, and f is a complex valued function. Furthermore, the results are extended to Banach algebras. Therefore, the obtained result will be forced to the pre-results(p=1) for this type's equations, and will serve as a sample to apply it to the extension of the other known equations.

  • p73 is a structural and functional homologue of the p53 tumor suppressor protein. Like p53, p73 induces apoptosis and cell cycle arrest and transactivates p53-responsive genes, conferring its tumor suppressive activity. In addition, p73 has unique roles in neuronal development and differentiation. The importance of p73-induced apoptosis lies in its capability to substitute the pro-apoptotic activity of p53 in various human cancer cells in which p53 is mutated or inactive. Despite the great importance of p73-induced apoptosis in cancer therapy, little is known about the molecular basis of p73-induced apoptosis. In this review, we discuss the p73 structures reported to date, detailed structural comparisons between p73 and p53, and current understanding of the transcription-dependent and -independent mechanisms of p73-induced apoptosis.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliable factors influencing the surgical outcome of the patients with traumatic acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) and to improve the functional outcome of these patients. Methods : A total of 256 consecutive patients who underwent surgical intervention for traumatic ASDH between March 1998 and March 2008 were reviewed. We evaluated the influence of perioperative variables on functional recovery and mortality using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results : Functional recovery was achieved in 42.2% of patients and the overall mortality was 39.8%. Age (OR=4.91, p=0.002), mechanism of injury (OR=3.66, p=0.003), pupillary abnormality (OR=3.73, p=0.003), GCS score on admission (OR=5.64, p=0.000), and intraoperative acute brain swelling (ABS) (OR=3.71, p=0.009) were independent predictors for functional recovery. And preoperative pupillary abnormality (OR=2.60, p=0.023), GCS score (OR=4.66, p=0.000), and intraoperative ABS (OR=4.16, p=0.001) were independent predictors for mortality. Midline shift, thickness and volume of hematoma, type of surgery, and time to surgery showed no independent association with functional recovery, although these variables were correlated with functional recovery in univariate analyses. Conclusion : Functional recovery was more likely to be achieved in patients who were under 40 years of age, victims of motor vehicle collision and having preoperative reactive pupils, higher GCS score and the absence of ABS during surgery. These results would be helpful for neurosurgeon to improve outcomes from traumatic acute subdural hematomas.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to identify independent predictors of mortality and functional recovery in patients with primary intracerebral hemorrhage (PICH) and to improve functional outcome in these patients. Methods : Data were collected retrospectively on 585 patients with supratentorial PICH admitted to the Stroke Unit at our hospital between 1st January 2004 and the 31st July 2008. Using multivariate logistic regression analysis, the associations between all selected variables and 30-day mortality and 90-day functional recoveries after PICH was evaluated. Results : Ninety-day functional recovery was achieved in 29.1% of the 585 patients and 30-day mortality in 15.9%. Age (OR=7.384, p=0.000), limb weakness (OR=6.927, p=0.000), and hematoma volume (OR=5.293, p=0.000) were found to be powerful predictors of 90-day functional recovery. Furthermore, initial consciousness (OR=3.013, p=0.014) hematoma location (lobar, OR=2.653, p=0.003), ventricular extension of blood (OR=2.077, p=0.013), leukocytosis (OR=2.048, p=0.008), alcohol intake (drinker, OR=1.927, p=0.023), and increased serum aminotransferase (OR=1.892, p=0.035) were found to be independent predictors of 90-day functional recovery after PICH. On the other hand, a pupillary abnormality (OR=4.532, p=0.000) and initial unconsciousness (OR=3.362, p=0.000) were found to be independent predictors of 30-day mortality after PICH. Conclusion : The predictors of mortality and functional recovery after PICH identified during this analysis may assist during clinical decision-making, when advising patients or family members about the prognosis of PICH and when planning intervention trials.
