  • The structural and contamination characteristics of hot cells at KAERI were investigated. The SEM results showed that the size of the hot particulate on the inner surface of the hot cell ranged from 0.2 to $10{\mu}m$. It was found that an inlet flow rate of 15 m/sec was suitable for this developed cyclone with a 49 mm optimum vortex finder length. The results showed that the collection efficiency was about 85% for $3{\mu}m$ particles. The collection efficiency didn't show a sharp increase when the inlet flow rate was faster than 15m/sec. When the temperature of the inlet flow gas was increased, the collection efficiency of the cyclone was slightly decreased. The larger the vortex finder length was, the higher the pressure drop in the cyclone was. The cut size diameter decreased with an increment of the Reynolds number. It was established that the flow in the cyclone was a turbulent flow on the basis of the Reynolds number and this turbulent flow caused a pressure drop in the cyclone. $Stk^{1/2}_{50}$ decreased with increasing values of the Reynolds number and it gradually approached a constant value at a higher value of the Reynolds number Namely, $Stk^{1/2}_{50}$ approached approximately 0.045 between 6000 and 8000 of the Reynolds number.

  • A mixed population of marine bacteria was obtained to catalize the biodegradation of bunker-C fuel oil by means of the enrichment culture technique. Samples used for the enrichment culture were collected from sea water and sediments in the vicinity of Pusan, Chungmu, and Ulsan in Korea. As the biodegradation of bunker-C oil proceeded, the number of bacteria increased from $1.1\times10^6\;to\;8.7\times10^8$ cells per ml when pH was bufferized by 0.1 M Tris-HCl buffer to 7.6, then oil dispersion increased to $OD^{540}$ 2.2 and approximately $48\%$ of the oil was biodegradated in 10 days. Oil dispersion was absolutely dependent on the addition of nitrogen and phosphate sources in sea water. High and low sulfur-containing bunker-C and crude oil could be dispersed similarly. Bunker-C oil was dispersed rapidly at the pH ranging from 7.0 to 8.0 and dispersed to the amount of 7.5 g per liter of sea water medium.

  • In this paper, we developed an electro impedance spectroscopy (EIS) device, which are primarily used for the analysis of fuel cells or batteries, to widen its coverage to the next generation super capacitor EDLC characterization. The developed system was composed of a signal generator that can generate various signal patterns, a potentiostatic generator, and a high speed digital filter for signal processing and measurement program. The developed system is portable, which is not only suitable laboratory use but also for mass production line. The special features of the system include a patterned output signal from 0.01 to 20 kHz, and a fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis of current signals, both of which are acquired simultaneously. Our tests showed similar results after comparing the analysis from our newly-developed device showing the characteristics of EDLC complex impedance and the analysis from an equivalent impedance which was applied to an equivalent circuit. Now, we can expect a fast inspection time from the application of the present system to the super capacitor production line, based on time-varying changes in electrochemical impedance.

  • The microstructural change of the $Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_3$ (SSC) electrode for a cathode material of solid oxdie fuel cells (SOFCs) deposited by the electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) technique was characterized. Samarium chloride hexahydrate $(SmCl_3{\cdot}6H_2O)$, strontium chloride hexahydrate $(SrCl_2{\cdot}gH_2O)$, cobalt nitrate hexahydrate $(Co(No_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O)$ as starting materials and methyl alcohol as solvent were used to make precursor solution. The suitable porous SSC films for a cathode of SOFCs were deposited on Si substrate and it is observed that the microstructure was strongly dependent on processing parameters such as deposition time, substrate temperature, and applied voltage. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray Diffractometer (XRD) measurement were used to investigate the microstructure and crystallinity of the SSC films. The ESD technique is shown to be an efficient method in which the SOFCs' cathode film can be fabricated with the desired phases and microstructure.

  • Experiments were conducted in a constant-pressure combustion chamber to investigate the effects of hydrocarbon addition on cellular instabilities of syngas-air flames. The measured laminar burning velocities were compared with the predicted results computed using reliable kinetic mechanisms with detailed transport and chemistry. The cellular instabilities that included hydrodynamic and diffusional-thermal instabilities of the hydrocarbon-added syngas-air flames were identified and evaluated. Further, experimentally measured critical Peclet numbers for fuel-lean flames were compared with the predicted results. Experimental results showed that the laminar burning velocities decreased significantly with an increase in the amount of hydrocarbon added in the reactant mixtures. With addition of propane and butane, the propensity for cell formation was significantly diminished whereas the cellular instabilities for methane-added syngas-air flames were not suppressed.

  • The stamping process is widely used in fabricating various sheet-parts for vehicle, airplane, and electronic devices due to its low processing cost and high productivity. Recently the use of thin sheets with corrugated structures has rapidly increased for the production of energy devices, e.g., heat exchangers and fuel cells. However, it is very difficult to make corrugated structures directly in the stamping process due to their geometrical complexity. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a multi-step stamping process with a combined heat treatment process: a sequence of the first stamping, heat treatment, and second stamping. By multi-stamping, we obtained successful results in fabricating very thin corrugated structures with thicknesses of $100{\mu}m$; these are applicable as part of a plate-type heat exchanger.

  • This review article highlights different types of nano-sized catalysts for the selective alcohol oxidation to form aldehydes (or ketones) with supported or immobilized metal nanoparticles. Metal nanoparticle catalysts are obtained through dispersing metal nanoparticles over a solid support with a large surface area. The nanocatalysts have wide technological applications to industrial and academic fields such as organic synthesis, fuel cells, biodiesel production, oil cracking, energy conversion and storage, medicine, water treatment, solid rocket propellants, chemicals and dyes. One of main reactions for the nanocatalyst is an aerobic oxidation of alcohols to produce important intermediates for various applications. The oxidation of alcohols by supported nanocatalysts including gold, palladium, ruthenium, and vanadium is very economical, green and environmentally benign reaction leading to decrease byproducts and reduce the cost of reagents as opposed to stoichiometric reactions. In addition, the room temperature alcohol oxidation using nanocatalysts is introduced.

  • Hollow-fiber membranes, is one of the new technologies that is growing rapidly in the past few decades. In addition, separation membranes using polymer materials, have attracted attentions in various fields including gas separation, fuel cells, water treatment, wastewater treatment, and organic separation. Nanofiltration (NF) membranes having the separation characteristics in the intermediate range between ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes for liquid separation, with relatively low investment cost and operating pressure lower than that of RO membranes, have high permeance and rejection performance of multivalent ions as well as organic compounds of molecular weight between $200{\sim}1000gmol^{-1}$. In this paper, we would like to review the research trends on the various structure control and characterization of NF hollow fiber membranes with respect to materials and the methods of preparation (phase inversion method and interfacial polymerization method). Currently, most of NF membranes have been manufactured by plate and frame types or spiral wound types. But hollow fiber types have delayed in commercial products, because of the weak strength when to produce on the basis of the existing materials, therefore the development of new materials or improvement of existing materials will be needed. If improving manufacturing technology is available, hollow fiber types will replace spiral wound types and gradually show a higher market share.

  • Natural gas is a clean fuel that discharges almost no air-contaminating substances. This study examined the simultaneous reduction of $CH_4$ and NOx of NGOC/LNT catalysts for CNG buses related to the improvement of the $de-CH_4/NOx$ performance, focusing mainly on identifying the additive catalysts, loading of the washcoat, stirring time, and types of substrates. The 3wt. % Ni-loaded NGOC generally exhibited superior $CH_4$ reduction performance through $CH_4$ conversion, because Ni is an alkaline, toxic oxide, and exerts a reducing effect on $CH_4$. A excessively small loading resulted in insufficient adsorption capacity of harmful gases, whereasa too high loading of washcoat caused clogging of the substrate cells. In addition, with the economic feasibility of catalysts considered, the appropriate amount of catalyst washcoat loading was estimated to be 124g/L. The NOx conversion rate of the NGOC/LNT catalysts stirred from $200^{\circ}C$ to $550^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours showed 10-15% better performance than the NGOC/LNT catalysts mixed for 2 hours over the entire temperature range. The NGOC/LNT catalysts exhibitedapproximately 20% higher $de-CH_4$ performance on the ceramic substrates than on the metal substrates.

  • One of the greatest challenges for our society is providing powerful electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells are among the most promising candidates in terms of energy and power density. As the starting material, $TiCl_4{\cdot}YCl_3$ solution and dispersing agent (HCP) were mixed and synthesized using ammonia as the precipitation agent, in order to prepare the nano size Y doped spherical $TiO_2$ precursor. Then, the $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ was synthesized using solid state reaction method through the stoichiometric mixture of Y doped spherical $TiO_2$ precursor and LiOH. The Ti mole increased the concentration of the spherical particle size due to the addition of HPC with a similar particle size distribution in a well in which $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ spherical particles could be obtained. The optimal synthesis conditions and the molar ratio of the Ti 0.05 mol reaction at $50^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes and at $850^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours heat treatment time were optimized. $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ was prepared by the above conditions as a working electrode after generating the Coin cell; then, electrochemical properties were evaluated when the voltage range of 1.5V was flat, the initial capacity was 141 mAh/g, and cycle retention rate was 86%; also, redox reactions between 1.5 and 1.7V, which arose from the insertion and deintercalation of 0.005 mole of Y doping is not a case of doping because the C-rate characteristics were significantly better.
