  • According to revolutionary developments in automobile technologies, various electronically controlled components of vehicles are rapidly increasing. A variety of advanced vehicles (hybrid vehicle, hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, electric vehicle, etc.) using electrical energy source are increasing, too. The electromagnetic compatibility is getting more important for development of a vehicle because those advanced vehicles are equipped with more new electronic systems. In general, electromagnetic compatibility tests consist of an electromagnetic interference (EMI) test and an electromagnetic susceptibility (EMS) test. In this paper, in order to investigate the electromagnetic interference in the cabin of vehicle by various electric and electronic components of vehicles, a series of narrowband electromagnetic emission tests are conducted. For comparison, the several digital home appliances (smartphone under charging, laptop compuer and digital camera), which are used a lot in daily lives, are tested.

  • This paper deals with a construction plan of hydrogen fueling stations on express highways using geographic information system. We analyzed the existing hydrogen fueling stations and production facilities to construct the hydrogen supply system to satisfy the hydrogen demands. Also, we suggested the necessary number and locations of hydrogen fueling stations on express highways for operating fuel cell vehicles. As a result, we need to construct at least 6 hydrogen stations on express highways in 2020 and 14 hydrogen stations in 2025. In 2030, when fuel cell vehicles are expected to spread over the whole nation, 114 hydrogen stations are needed to construct on express highways. This study mainly utilized the information of distances between hydrogen production facilities and fueling stations. However, we need to analyze the other factors such as traffic and income data. Also, it is necessary to make a suitable construction plan of hydrogen fueling stations that should be constructed on each district using geographic information system.

  • Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles are typically refueled at a wide range of temperatures (-40℃ to 85℃) in the hydrogen refueling station in accordance with the worldwide accepted standard. Currently, there is no traceable method by which to verify and calibrate the hydrogen flowmeters to be used at hydrogen refueling stations except for a water calibration process as a conventional method. KRISS hydrogen field test standard based on the gravimetric principle was developed to verify the measurement accuracy of the mass flowmeter to be used at hydrogen refueling stations for the first time in Korea.

  • The use of new and renewable energy is essential to solve the problem of increasing fossil fuel use due to industrial development. The paradigm of the automobile industry has changed due to the strengthening of environmental regulations in developed countries, and the development of eco-friendly cars is underway. Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), which use hydrogen as fuel, require strict standards for fuel-related components. In particular, check valves for FCEV control high-pressure hydrogen and thus, must be sufficiently strong for the challenging environment caused by high-pressure hydrogen. Therefore, this study used DEFORM 3D, a regular finite element analysis program, to check the moldability of check valves for FCEV, design the process, verify reliability through single streamline analysis, tensile tests, and ANSYS simulations, and identify suitable materials for the high-pressure hydrogen environment.

  • The cold start problem is one of major obstacles to overcome for the commercialization of fuel cell vehicles. However, the cold start characteristics of fuel cell systems are very complicated since various phenomena, i.e. ice-blocking, electro-chemical reactions, heat transfer, and defrosting of BOP components, are involved in them. This paper presents a framework to approach the problem at a full stack scale using Axiomatic Design (AD). It was characterized in terms of Functional Requirements (FRs) and Design Parameters (DPs) while their relations were established in a design matrix. Considering the design matrix, the endplates should have low thermal conductivity and capacity without increase in weight or decrease in structural stiffness. Consequently, composite sandwich endplates were proposed and examined both through finite element analyses and experiments simulating cold start conditions. From the examinations, it was found that the composite sandwich endplates significantly contributed to improving the cold start characteristics of PEMFC.

  • According to revolutionary developments in automobile technologies, eco-friendly advanced vehicles (hybrid vehicle, hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, electric vehicle, etc.) are rapidly increasing. The electromagnetic compatibility is getting more important for development of a vehicle because those advanced vehicles are driven by electric energy and equipped with more electric systems. In general, electromagnetic compatibility tests consist of an electromagnetic interference(EMI) test and an electromagnetic susceptibility(EMS) test. EMI test of the electric vehicles are needed not only in driving mode but also in charging mode because they must be recharged by much electric energy for driving. Depending on vehicle manufacturers, the charging device type and the location of charging device inlet in electric vehicles are various. In this paper, in order to investigate EMI of electric vehicles in charging mode in consideration of the direction of measuring antenna and the location of charging device inlet, a series of electromagnetic emission tests are conducted using three electric vehicles (neighborhood electric vehicle, electric vehicle and electric vehicle-bus). The test results show that electromagnetic emission measurements in charging mode are dependent on the direction of measuring antenna and the location of charging device inlet.

  • Growing concerns regarding environmental pollution have increased the demand for green vehicles. Green vehicles include electric vehicles, compressed natural gas vehicles, fuel cell vehicles, and vehicles running on fuels such as bio diesel or an ethanol blend. CNG vehicles are equipped with a cylinder valve installed in a high-pressure vessel to control the CNG flow. For this purpose, the optimum design of cylinder valve solenoid is necessary to secure at driving a CNG vehicle. In this study, electromagnetic field analysis to ensure the reliable operation of the solenoid was conducted by using a Maxwell V15. The electromagnetic field analysis was performed by magnetostatic technique according to distance between magnetic poles in order to predict the attraction force. Finally, the attraction force was validated through comparison between the Maxwell results and the measurement results. From the results, the error of attraction force was found to be 2.85 N to 6.5 N under the testing conditions.

  • This paper presents the modeling of hybrid railway vehicles with hydrogen Fuel-Cells (FCs)/battery using a rule-based algorithm. The driving power of traction system is determined with the speed-torque curve by operation area of the electric machine and the electrical systems are modeled. The demanded power of electrical systems is set with the energy management system (EMS). The consumption of hydrogen is effectively managed with the subdivided operation region depending on the state of charge (SOC). The validity of the modeling is verified using MATLAB/Simulink.

  • There is a general agreement that performance of hydrogen fuel cell vehicle(FCV) with respect to cold start, packaging, acceleration, refueling time and range has progressed to the point where vehicles that could be brought to market in 2015_2020 will satisfy customer expectations. However cost, durability and the lack of refueling infrastructure remain significant barriers. Cost have been dramatically reduced and durability has been enhanced over the past decade, yet are still about twice what appears to be needed sustainable market success. Advanced Technologies for the commercialization of hydrogen FCV were reviewed.
