'Niitaka' (Pyrus pyriforia) has been the major cultivar of the Asian pear since the 1970s, and yielded about 70% of pear production in South Korea in 2002. When Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day) is earlier than the fruit maturation period, farmers seek to advance the harvesting date to keep pace with the increase in consumer demand caused by the holiday. However, unripened fruit is of suboptimal marketable value because the flesh has a low soluble solid content, the fruit color is not attractive, and stone volume is high. Compost treatment can enhance soil microbial activity and affect soil chemistry, which may accelerate fruit maturation and allow an earlier harvesting date. Therefore, we examined the effect of 2 years of compost application on the fruit quality of Asian pear trees grown under conventional management conditions. The Hunter "L" and "a" values were higher in compost-treated fruit, which also showed greater sweetness and lower acidity than did conventional fruit. The stone volume was reduced and fruit calcium concentration was increased by compost treatment. Therefore, compost treatment may advance fruit harvesting owing to the increased marketability afforded by attractive skin color, sweetness, and reduced stone volume.

Intermediate parent "Wonkyo Ga-Dangwagi 1" (Malus domestica Borkh.) was released from Fruit Research Division, National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Korea in 2008. It was derived from the cross between "Starkrimson" and columnar type "McIntosh Wijcik" in 1992 after selection tests from 2000 to 2008. Trees are moderately vigorous and have spreading branching habit. It bears abundant flower buds on one-year-old branches and fruits mainly on spurs or short branches. Harvesting time of this variety is late September, 7 days later than that of "Hongro" in Suwon. The fruit is conical to narrow conical in shape and bright red in skin color. Fruit size is small with weight of 200~240g on an average and fruits have $14^{\circ}Bx$ soluble solid and medium acidity. It is moderately susceptible to alternaria leaf spot (Alternaria alternata). "Wonkyo Ga-Dangwagi 1" is a promising apple cultivar and will appeal to young people with good sugar-acid balance.

The study was conducted to investigate the relationship between berry set density per bearing shoot and fruit quality in 'Kyoho' grape. Fruit quality was evaluated by soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), skin color, and total anthocyanin content (TAC). There was a sharp increase in SSC of fruit juice from veraison initiation to 30 days after veraison. The SSC level increased with the lower berry set per bearing shoot. The rapid accumulation of SSC 4 weeks after veraison in the cluster of low berry set (10-20) was observed, while that of high berry set (40-50) showed delayed and low SSC accumulation which reached only $15.0^{\circ}Bx$ at harvest. TA of fruit juice in all treatments reduced rapidly from veraison initiation to 30 days after veraison, and then reduced gradually. TA in all treatments except 50 berries set reached to 0.4-0.6% which was optimal TA in 'Kyoho' at fruit harvest. During fruit maturing after veraison, fruit skin color changed from green to purple-black, L and b value decreased, and a value increased. TAC in 10 and 20 berries set was gradually increased to 2 weeks after veraison, sharply increased until 6 weeks after veraison, and then finally decreased, while TAC in content in 30, 40, and 50 berries set per annual shoot remained at low level. The results indicated that the number of berry set for good quality seemed to be 20 per bearing shoot in 'Kyoho' grape.

Various colors of fruit skin and flesh are the most popular commercial criteria for peach classification. In order to breed new red-fleshed peach cultivar, many cross seedlings and generations should be maintained. Therefore it is necessary to develop early selection markers to screen seedlings with target traits to increase breeding efficiency. For the comparison of transcription profiles in peach cultivars differing in flesh color expression, two cDNA libraries were constructed. Differences in gene expression between red-fleshed peach cultivar, 'Josanghyeoldo' and white-fleshed peach cultivar, 'Mibaekdo' were analyzed by next-generation sequencing (NGS). Expressed sequence tag (EST) of clones from the two cultivars were selected for nucleotide sequence determination and homology searches. Putative single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) were screened from peach EST contigs by high resolution melting (HRM) analysis displayed specific difference between 8 red-fleshed peach cultivars and 24 white-fleshed peach cultivars. All 72 pairs of SNPs were discriminated and the HRM profiles of amplicons were established. In the study reported here, the development of SNP markers for distinguishing between red and white fleshed peach cultivars by HRM analysis offers the opportunity to use DNA markers. This SNP marker could be useful for peach marker assisted breeding and provide a good reference for relevant research on molecular mechanisms of color variation in peach cultivars.
Fourier transform - infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) provides biochemical profiles containing overlapping signals from a majority of the compounds that are present when whole cell extracts are analyzed. We attempted to determine the ripeness of strawberry fruit flesh by FT-IR. Fruit ripeness was divided into four developmental stages based on fruit skin color: 'yellow-green', 'pink-green', 'pink', and 'red' stages. Principal component analysis of FT-IR data of inside fruit flesh extracts clustered samples of four different developmental stages into three discrete groups: (1) 'yellow-green' group, (2) 'pink-green' group, and (3) 'pink' and 'red' group. The most remarkable difference between four different developmental stages was found in the carbohydrate fingerprint region $(1,000-1,100cm^{-1})$ of the FT-IR spectrum, indicating that differences in carbohydrate compounds represented the ripeness of strawberry fruit. Overall results indicate that FT-IR in combination with PCA enables discrimination of the ripeness of strawberry fruit flesh.

We analyzed the effect of planting site (elevation: high, middle, low) and temperature condition of orchard on the frost injury occurrence and storage characteristics of persimmon (Diospyros kaki cv. 'Fuyu) fruits under an early fall frost at two orchards, Changwon (A) and Changnyeong (B), Gyeongsangnam-do Korea. Also, the fruits picked at Nov. 5 and Nov. 20 were MA stored to investigate the quality and chilling injury of fruits. On 2-way factor analysis, both planting elevation and orchard factor had not a significant effect on fruit characteristics (weight, firmness, soluble solid), while planting elevation factor did on the skin color (hunter 'a')(p<0.05). A fruit skin coloration at orchard A was faster than that at orchard B. At low elevation of orchard B, 2% fruits were frost injured at harvest season. On LDPE film MA storage with the fruits harvested at Nov. 5 and Nov. 20, the fruits at orchard A had higher fruit firmness than those of orchard B during storage. In addition, the 73% (orchard A) and 85%(orchard B) fruits harvested at Nov. 5 showed no chilling injury 80 days after storage. However, At harvest of Nov, 20 (after incidence of frost), only the 14% fruits of orchard B had no the chilling disorder 80 days after storage, even though 76% fruits at orchard A did.

This study has been conducted to investigate the effect of Urea and K2SO4 treatment at stone hardening stage and 20 days before harvest on soil chemical properties, mineral nutrient concentration and quality of 'Mibaekdo' fruit peach. K concentration after Urea and K2SO4 treatment in soil was increased significantly by Urea 162g+K2SO4 188g/tree(standard amount) treatment at stone hardening stage, K2SO4 1.0% tree-spray, Urea 81g+K2SO4 94g/tree(half amount), Urea 162g+K2SO4 188g/tree and Urea 324g+K2SO4 376g/tree(double amount) soil treatment before harvest 20 days compared to control. T-N, K and Ca concentration in leaf was increased significantly by all treatment. but Na concentration in leaf was increased by Urea 0.5% and K2SO4 1.0% tree-spray treatment before harvest 20 days. T-N concentration in fruit skin was increased significantly by standard amount soil treatment, which decreased by K2SO4 1.0% tree-spray and half amount soil treatment. T-N, K and Ca concentration in fruit flesh(1~10mm depth flesh from peel) were increased markedly by all treatment excepted Urea 0.5% tree-spray. The leaf weight at harvest was increased markedly by Urea 0.5% tree-spray, standard amount and double amount treatment before harvest 20 days. Fruit weight was increased significantly by standard amount compared to all treatment. Red fruit skin(Hunter a value) progress was effective by K2SO4 tree-spray, half amount and double amount treatment before harvest 20 days. Fruit SSC was increased significantly by Urea 0.5% and K2SO4 tree-spray before harvest 20 days, standard amount treatment at stone hardening stage compared to control.
The anthocyanin pigment composition and color of several grape cultivars including Campbell Early, Muscat Bailey A, Kyoho (black berries), and North Red (red berries), were investigated. Twelve types of anthocyanins were identified in these cultivars by LC-MS. Black-colored cultivars, especially Muscat Bailey A, contained the widest range of anthocyanins, whereas the anthocyanin composition of North Red, the red-colored cultivar, was relatively simple. Anthocyanins extracted from the skin of berries were red in color at low pH, regardless of the origin of the extract. At higher pH, however, various colors, including blue, violet, brown, and black, were evident, depending on the cultivar. Differences in color expression among cultivars may be related to variations in the types and amounts of anthocyanidins synthesized, from which anthocyanin pigments are derived. The colors expressed by anthocyanin pigments were strong and diverse even at low concentrations. Therefore, anthocyanins extracted from grapes may be useful as natural food colorants.
This study was performed to investigate the effects of food habits and life style on the skin health of young Korean females in their late teens and twenties. The study focused on facial skin and used a self-administered questionnaire survey, an examination of skin type, and pH tests. More than half of the females had combination skin type or pH level higher than 5.8 which is regarded as normal. The variables that turned out to significantly (p<0.05) effect their facial skin types were body mass index (BMI), the type of residence, the amount of water intake, whether or not they intake drinks, the frequency and amount of alcohol drinking, favorite foods as side dishes at meals, intake frequency of fruit, the dairy, seaweed, and fast food, the frequency of washing their faces per day, the method of how they used water during face washing, whether or not they had professional skin care, and whether or not they wore color make up. The variables of the females' age, BMI, the amount of alcohol drinking, the frequency and duration of exercise, the controlling methods of stress, their favorite foods as side dishes at meals, and the intake frequency of soy products or animal foods significantly affected their facial pH levels (p<0.05). The results of this study indicate that some food habits and life styles are significantly related with facial skin health. More importantly BMI and favorite foods as side dishes during daily food intake could have remarkable effects on facial skin health.
This study was carried out to examine the effects of soil sulfur mixture on the control apple valsa canker in apple orchard for two years. In organic apple orchard, The recovery percentages of apple valsa canker were compared among control (no treatment), lime sulfur, and soil sulfur in organic orchards. In conventional apple orchards, those of recovery percentages were compared among control, neoasozin, lime sulfur, and soil sulfur. Compared with control, soil sulfur treatments significantly improved the recovery percentages of apple valsa canker infected trees in organic orchard. However, there were no differences between lime sulfur and soil sulfur treatment in organic apple orchard, except BongHyun orchard experiment in 2013. Compared with control fruit qualities, fruit skin red color and fruit firmness were improved in lime sulfur and soil sulfur treatment, respectively. In conventional orchard, apple trees treated with lime sulfur, soil sulfur or neoasozin improved recovery percentages, compared with those of control trees. Soil sulfur treatments recovered 87.5~97.5% of infected 'Fuji'/MM106 apple trees in organic and conventional apple orchards. The trees applied with neoasozin showed significant lower shoot growth than those of soil sulfur treatment in conventional orchard. Soli sulfur treatment improved fruit red color, but did not affected fruit weight, fruit firmness, soluble solids concentrations, and titratable acidity.
