This paper presents the plastic inhomogeneous deformation behavior of bimetal composite rods during the axisymmetric and steady-state extrusion process through a conical die. The rigid-plastic FE model considering frictional contact problem was used to analyze the co-extrusion process with material combinations of Cu/Al. Different cases of initial geometry shape for composite material were simulated under different conditions of co-extrusion process, which includes the interference and frictional conditions. From the simulation results, the sleeve cladding rate at the core/sleeve interface was recorded as a distribution of diameter ratio and interference conditions, which will be useful for the investigations of the bonding process during co-extrusion process. In addition, the results of the co-extrusion, connected with the results of the variations of diameter rate and average contact pressure, demonstrate a good agreement and present the possibility of describing the parameters of the plastic zones in non-uniform deformation of these type of composite materials.
We propose a mathematical model which describes the frictional contact between a piezoelectric body and an electrically conductive foundation. The behavior of the material is described with a linearly electro-viscoelastic constitutive law with long term memory. The mechanical process is dynamic and the electrical conductivity coefficient depends on the total slip rate, the friction is modeled with Tresca's law which the friction bound depends on the total slip rate with taking into account the electrical conductivity of the foundation both. The main results of this paper concern the existence and uniqueness of the weak solution of the model; the proof is based on results for second order evolution variational inequalities with a time-dependent hemivariational inequality in Banach spaces.

Method for contact failure mitigation is studied in this paper. The focus is laid on the contact shape that eventually influences the internal stresses. Contact mechanics is consulted within the frame of plane problem. Hertzian contact, rounded punch and uniform traction profiles are considered. Frictional as well as frictionless contact is also considered. As results, the higher traction profile induced by the rounded punch reveals the greatest among the considered shapes. Therefore, it is suggested to increase the edge radius as large as possible if a contact body of punch shape needs to be designed. It is also found that uniform traction cannot always provide the solution of contact failure mitigation.
Most of machines and structures contain the elements which contact each other directly. When these elements subjected to vibration or repeated load, local relative movement occurs between the elements in contact which results in, a kind of wear. In order to know the factors which govern fretting, we have to analyze the phenomenon of microslip which causes fretting by using a general and efficient method from a viewpoint of contact mechanics. Based on the results of analysis, it is necessary to propose the way of minizing fretting which is one of the most significant surface failure. In this report, a general and efficient algorithm is applied to analyze the contact problem of the bolted joint, which is one of the typical elements damaged by fretting, with ratios of plate thickness, the ratios of Young's moduli, the ratios of the plate thickness to bolt radius varied. Finally, the ways of minizing fretting for the boked joint are suggested.

CMP(Chemical Mechanical Polishing) Processes have been used to improve the planarization of the wafers in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. Polishing performance of CMP Process is determined by the chemical reaction of the liquid sol containing abrasive, pressure of the head portion and rotational speed of the polishing pad. However, frictional heat generated during the CMP process causes agglomeration of the particles and the liquidity degradation, resulting in a non-uniform of surface roughness and surface scratch. To overcome this chronic problem, herein, we introduced NaCl salt as an additive into silica sol for elimination the generation of frictional heat. The added NaCl reduced the zata potential of silica sol and increased the contact surface of silica particles onto the sapphire wafer, resulting in increase of the removal rate up to 17 %. Additionally, it seems that the silica particles adsorbed on the polishing pad decreased the contact area between the sapphire water and polishing pad, which suppressed the generation of frictional heat.

In the precision motion device, the frictional problem by mechanical friction causes serious effects on the system performance. Various researches have been executed to solve this problem, but classical fluid lubrication method has some disadvantages in precision motion under clean environment. Therefore, the magnetic bearing and contact-free systems have been focused on with its pollution-free characteristics. In this paper, we treat modeling and analysis of electromagnets not only for magnetic bearing but also fer contact-free electromagnetic actuators. Three types of electromagnet for various applications are modeled and analyzed by magnetic circuit theory and the validity is verified by experiments.
A brief description of the current technology (contact-start-stop) employed in most of today's hard disk drive is presented. The dynamics and head/disk interactions during a start/stop process are very complicated and no one has been able to accurately model the interactions. Thus, the head/disk interface that meets the start/stop durability and stiction requirements are always developed statistically. In arriving at a solution. many sets of statistical tests are run by varying several parameters. such as, the carbon overcoat thickness. lubricant thickness. disk surface roughness, etc. Consequently, the cost associated III developing an interface could be significant since the outcome is difficult to predict. An alternative method known as Load/Unload technology alters the problem set. such that. the start/stop performance can be designed in a predictable manner. Although this techno¬logy offers superior performance and significantly reduces statistical testing time, it also has some potential problems. However. contrary to the CSS technology. most of the problems can be solved by design and not by trial and error. One critical problem is that of head/disk contacts during the loading and unloading processes. These contact can cause disk and slider damage because the contacts are likely to occur at high disk speeds resulting in large friction forces. Use of glass substrate disks also may present problems if not managed correctly. Due to the low thermal conductivity of glass substrates. any head/disk contacts may result in erasure due to frictional heating of the head/disk interface. In spite of these and other potential problems. the advantage with L/UL system is that these events can be understood. analyzed. and solved in a deterministic manner.
The main goal of this paper is to establish an interference tolerance for determining optimal amount of clearance in the shaft-bearing system supported by radial ball bearings. The 2-D frictional contact model was employed for the FE analysis between the shaft and the inner raceway. Several examples were simulated using different material properties for the solid shaft. Efforts were focused on the deformation applied in the radial direction to select suitable bearings. The analysis results showed that the initial axial preload applied on the bearings plays a significant role to reduce bearing fatigue life. The proposed design parameters obtained by numerical simulations can approximately predict a rate of bearing life reduction as a function of shaft diameter ratio. This analysis can also be used to calculate the optimal initial radial clearance in order to obtain a shaft-bearing system design for high accuracy and long life.
A nonlocal finite element model is developed for solving elasto-static frictional contact problems of nanostructures and nanoscale devices. A two dimensional Eringen-type nonlocal elasticity model is adopted. The material is characterized by a stress-strain constitutive relation of a convolution integral form whose kernel is capable to take into account both the diffusion process of nonlocal elasticity and the scale ratio effects. The incremental convex programming procedure is exploited as a solver. Two examples of different nature are presented, the first one presents the behavior of a nanoscale contacting system and the second example discusses the nano-indentation problem.

A transient finite element simulation is developed for the two-dimensional thermoelastic contact problem of a stationary functionally graded material between sliding layers, with frictional heat generation. Thermoelastic instability in functionally graded materials is investigated. The critical speed of functionally graded material coating disk is larger than that of the conventional steel disk. The effect of the nonhomogeneity parameter in functionally graded material is also investigated. The results show that functionally gradient materials restrain the growth of perturbation and delay the contact separation.
