This work introduces a modal testing and analysis results of the mock-up for a layered stone pagoda. The pagoda has been horizontally excited by an impact hammer. As to the measured acceleration time responses, the first five lower mode shapes and natural frequency are extracted by the TDD technique. It is observed that the time delay of a shear wave occurs through friction surfaces. Such phenomena cannot be described by using the traditional analytical models such as a continuum cantilever beam model or a discrete shear building model. However, the time delay typically affects only the phases of the pagoda system. The frequencies of the pagoda system are not affected by such time delay. It is found in the first time that the layered stone pagoda system has a set of closely placed modes in near of natural frequency. It is believed that such modes are due to the friction characteristics in friction surfaces. Based on the stick-slip friction model, it seems that the one of the closely placed mode can be a self-excited one.

This study provided the analytical finite element method estimating the friction-induced noise on the complex beam structure. The frictional contact model was theoretically constructed and applied to the analytical finite element squeal model. The numerical results showed that the beam structure was excited by the mode-coupling instability of the specific system modes. Also, the direction of friction was shown to influence on the dynamic instability of the modes. Besides, the unstable modal frequencies estimated from the numerical calculation were validated by the experiment of the actual beam structure.
An unrestrained plane rigid body resting on a horizontal surface which shakes horizontally and vertically may assume one of the five modes of response: rest, slide, slide-rock, rock, and free flight. The first four are nontrivial modes of motion. It is important to study which one of these responses is started from rest as in most studies it is often assumed that the initial mode is the particular mode of response. Criteria governing the initiation of modes are first briefly discussed. It is shown that the commencement of response modes depends on the aspect ratio of the body, coefficients of static and kinetic friction at the body-base interface, and the magnitude of maximum base accelerations. Considering the last two factors as random variables, the initiation of response modes is next studied from a probabilistic point of view. Type 1 extreme value and lognormal distributions are employed for maximum base excitations and coefficient of friction respectively. Analytical expressions for computing the probability values of each mode of response are derived. The effects of slenderness ratio, vertical acceleration, and statistical distributions of maximum acceleration and coefficient of friction are shown through numerical results and plots.
In presence of collision between two rigid bodies, they exhibit impulsive behavior to generate physically feasible state. When the frictional impulse is involved, collision resolution can not be easily made based on a simple Newton's law or Poisson's law, mainly due to possible change of collision mode during collision, For example, sliding may change to sticking, and then sliding resumes. We first examine two conventional methods: the method of mode evolution by differential equation, and the other by linear complementarity programming. Then, we propose a new method for mode evolution by solving only algebraic equations defining mode changes. Further, our method attains the original nonlinear impulse cone constraint. The numerical simulation will elucidate the advantage of the proposed method as an alternative to conventional ones.
This paper reviewed characteristics of fatigue crack behavior observed by changing various shapes of initial crack and magnitudes of loading in compact tension shear(CTS) specimen subjected to shear loading. In the high-loading condition, fatigue crack under shear loading propagated branching from the pre-crack tip. Meanwhile, the secondary fatigue crack in the low-loading condition which was created in the notch root due to friction on the pre-crack face grew to a main crack. Influenced by the mode II loading condition, fatigue crack propagation retardation appeared in the initial propagation region due to the reduction of crack driving force and friction on crack face. In both cases, however, fatigue cracks grew in tensile mode type. Propagation path of fatigue crack under the shear loading was 70 degree angle from the initial crack regardless of its shape and load magnitude.
This article deals with the manufacture and test results of asbestos-free friction material for Aluminium at toy disk. In order to obtain optimum formulation, various formulations of fibres, matrix, modifiers, fillers, etc were designed and evaluated. The constant friction and brake dynamometer tests were performed to know weak and strong point for each friction material. The C21 formulation of various tested formulations exhibited superior friction constant(0.38∼38), fade rate (18%) by JASO C406 test mode and maximum wear 1.6 mm. disc wear 0.08 mm by JASO C427 test mode. The surface morphology of AL alloy disk(before and after test) was observed by Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) and Image Analyzer.
Joint strength of spot friction welded 5J32 Al alloy were investigated according to the tool shape and the tool penetration depth. General spot friction stir welding tool consists of a shoulder having bigger diameter and a threaded pin projected from the shoulder, which resulted in the generation of large up-lifting of upper plate around the weld nugget because of the deeper penetration and the severe stirring effect of threaded pin. Two kinds of welding tools without the threaded pin were used to avoid the distortion and improve the joint strength. One was a simple cylindrical shape and the other was cylindrical shape with small projection. Therefore, the process was named as spot friction welding comparing to spot friction stir welding because spot friction welding don't use a stirring effect. Using the cylindrical shape tool with small projection, the up-lifting of upper plate were avoided and joint strength were superior to that of the joint using simple cylindrical shape tool. At the 0.5mm of too penetration depth using cylindrical tool with small projection, nugget pull fracture mode can be observed and shear fracture mode were dominant at the rest conditions.

This paper presents the development of a new inchworm actuation system using the shearing deformation of the piezoelectric actuators. In this new actuation system, piezoelectric shearing/expanding actuators, an inertial mass and an advanced preload system are configured innovatively to generate the motion of an inertial mass. There are two modes in the new actuation system: (1) stick mode, and (2) clamp mode. In stick mode, the deformation of the piezoelectric shearing actuators drives an inertial mass by means of the friction force at their contact interface. On the other hand, in clamp mode, the piezoelectric expanding actuators provide the gripping force to an inertial mass and, as a result, eliminate its backward motion following the rapid backward deformation of the piezoelectric shearing actuators. To investigate the feasibility of the proposed new actuation system, the experimental system is built up, and the static performance evaluation and dynamic analysis are conducted. The open-loop performance of the linear motion of the proposed new actuation system is evaluated. In dynamic analysis, the mathematical model for the contact interface is established based on the LuGre friction model and the equivalent parameters are identified.
It has been argued that fracture energy of composite laminates depends on their thickness and number of layers. In this paper a modified direct energy balance approach (DEBA) has been developed to evaluate the mode-II shear fracture energy for E-glass/Epoxy laminates from finite element model at an arbitrary thickness. This approach considers friction and damage/plasticity deformations using cohesive zone modeling (CZM) and nonlinear finite element modeling. The presence of compressive stress and resulting friction was argued to be a possible cause for the thickness dependency of fracture energy. In the finite element modeling, CZM formulation has been developed with bilinear cohesive constitutive law combined with friction consideration. Also ply element have been developed with shear plastic damage model. Modified direct energy balance approach has been proposed for estimation of mode-II shear fracture energy. Experiments were performed on laminates of glass epoxy specimens for characterization of material parameters and determination of mode-II fracture energies for different thicknesses. Effect of laminate thickness on fracture energy of transverse crack tension (TCT) and end notched flexure (ENF) specimens has been numerically studied and comparison with experimental results has been made. It is shown that the developed numerical approach is capable of estimating increase in fracture energy due to size effect.

In a precise control system, the Lu-Gre friction model has often been used to describe the nonlinear friction. For the XY table system with this friction model, we identified the friction parameters and designed nonlinear observer. The nonlinear friction effects could be removed within appropriate position tracking errors and control inputs through experiments. Also, we designed the nonmodel-based SMC system to compensate the nonlinear friction. Through experiments, it is shown that this method has the similar performance compared with the nonlinear observer system and is useful when friction parameters are hard to identify except the problem of input chattering.
