  • Piezoelectric ceramics is an active element that makes stator to vibrate to generate rotational force in ultrasonic motors. In drive of ultrasonic motors, many factors that affect to the resonance characteristics of piezoelectric ceramics exist. For example, those factors are bonding condition with elastic body, the magnitude of electric field, the normal force for frictional drive and the emission of heat due to vibration and friction and so on. Therefore, it is important to research the inclination of property variation of piezoelectric ceramics in circumstance that has complex elements. In this paper, we focused and analyzed the resonance characteristics of ultrasonic motor due to the magnitude of the driving voltage and normal force.

  • A total of 17 experimental data for the onset of slugging, which is assumed to be the precursor of the condensation-induced waterhammer (CIWH), have been obtained for various How rates of water Incorporating the most recent correlations of interfacial heat transfer and friction factor developed for a circular geometry and using an improved criterion of transition from stratified to a slug flow, two existing analytical models to predict lower and upper bounds for CIWH have been upgraded. Applicability of the present as well as existing CIWH models has been tested by comparison with two sets of CIWH data. The result of this comparison shows that the applicability of the present as well as existing models is reasonably good. Based on the present models for CIWH, a computer code entitled as“KAIST-CIWH”has been developed and sample guide charts to find CIWH free regions for a given combination of major flow parameters in a long horizontal pipe have been presented along with the results of parametric studies of major parameters (D, P, $T_{f,in}$, and L/D) on the critical inlet water flow rate($W_{f,in}_crit$ for both lower and upper bounds. In addition, two simple formulas for lower and upper bounds that can be used in an emergency for quick results have been presented.

  • The aerodynamic resistance($R_a$) to vertical transfer in the surface boundary layer can be formulated in terms of the friction velocity, height of observation, vertical heat flux and surface roughness. Unlike previous studies which focused on the role of $R_c$, present study perform additional tests using a variety of $R_a$ formulae. Several $R_a$ formulations available in the literature, suitable for unstable conditions, were tested for their influence on the dry deposition velocity. The canopy resistance($R_c$) determines the shape of the diurnal pattern, while a small amplitude diurnal cycle in $V_d$ was attributed to the aerodynamic resistance. The aerodynamic resistance is the major contributor to the formation of spikes in nighttime and $R_a$ is relatively important at night because the canopy resistance is smaller. All formulations show similar diurnal cycle and yield good agreement with the observations. Although present $V_d$ formulations are suitable for numerical air qualify models, the research must continue for further improvements in resistance parametrizations.

  • In a rolling wire probe, a key component of an inspection apparatus for PDP electrode patterns, the electric performance of it is known to be strongly dependent on the surface condition of a collet pin, a needle pin, and a wire. However, the collet and needle pins rotate very rapidly in contact with each other, which results in the degradation of the surface by the heat and friction and finally the formation of black wear marks on the surface after a several hundred hours test. Once the black wear marks appear on the surface, the electric resistance of the probe increases sharply and so the integrity of the probe is severely damaged. In this experiment, TiN coating, which has excellent electric conductances and good wear-resistance, has been applied on the surface of collect and needle pins for preventing the surface damages. In order to achieve the homogeneous coating with a good adhesion property, special coating substrate stages and jigs were designed and applied during coating. TiN has been deposited using 99.999% Titanium target by a DC reactive sputtering method. According to the components and jigs, processing parameters, such as DC power, RF bias and the flow rate ratio of Ar and N$_2$ used as reactive gases, has been controlled to obtain good TiN films. Detailed problems and solutions for applying the new substrate stages and jigs will be discussed.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the effect of double injection strategies on combustion characteristics in a single-cylinder diesel engine. These studies are applied to the double injection strategies, such as $2^{nd}$ injection timing variations with fixed injection interval (8 degree) and variations of injection pressures with fixed injection timing and intervals. The injection quantity was 7 + 7 mg for double injections, and 14 mg for single injection. When the injection pressure was increased, the ignition delay was shortened, and the ISFC (indicated specific fuel consumption) was increased due to the fast termination of combustion by the shortened energizing duration. In addition, the retardation of injection timings toward TDC (top dead center) caused the reduction of ignition delay and the decrease of ISFC with the decrease of FMEP (friction mean effective pressure).

  • Hot spot phenomenon that occurs, during judder vibration, is locally concentrated heat due to friction between brake disk and pad. It is important to understand the reason behind hot spot phenomenon, for reduction of judder vibration. In this experimental study, experiments were performed in accordance with rotation speed of brake disk, pressure of master cylinder and pad length for achieving different aspects of hot spot phenomenon. Temperature distribution of hot spot was obtained by using the infrared camera. As the hot spot occurred, vibration was measured and frequency analysis was performed. Finite element analysis of thermal deformation of disk was performed by using temperature distribution that was achieved by experimental results. And mode shapes of disk was analyzed by finite element analysis and compared with experimental results. It was observed that the excitation frequency band of frictional contact and frictional force mainly affects the hot spot phenomenon.

  • A brushless direct current (BLDC) motor electronically performs rectification without brushes. It therefore does not have the typical mechanical friction contacts between the brushes and commutators. The BLDC motor has the advantages of high speed, low noise, and electronic noise reduction in addition to high durability and reliability. Therefore, it is mainly used in electric vehicles and electric equipment. However, iron loss and copper loss due to long-term use induce temperature increases in the motor, which reduces its performance and life. The temperatures of the stator and permanent magnet are predicted to be $62.3^{\circ}C$ and $32.2^{\circ}C$, respectively. This study shows the enhanced temperature distribution in a 600 W BLDC motor using unsteady and three-dimensional (3D) numerical investigations validated with experimental data.

  • MoN-Cu thin films were prepared to achieve appropriate properties of high hardness and low friction coefficient, which could be applied to automobile engine parts for reducing energy consumption as well as solving wear problems. Composite thin films of MoN-Cu have been deposited by various processes using multiple targets such as Mo and Cu. However, those deposition with multiple targets revealed demerits such as difficulties in exact control of composition and homogeneous deposition. This study is aiming for suggesting an appropriate process to solve those problems. A single alloying target of Mo-Cu (10 at%) was prepared by powder metallurgy methods of mechanical alloying (MA) and spar plasma sintering (SPS). Thin film of MoN-Cu was then deposited by magnetron sputtering using the single alloying target of Mo-Cu (10 at%). Properties of the resulting MoN-Cu thin film were examined and compared to those of MoN-Cu thin films prepared with double targets of Mo and Cu.

  • In the current paper, a generalization of the results of Zhao et al. (2008) on a new design of C/C composite multidisc brake system is presented. The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of thermal sensitivity of Carbon/Carbon (C/C) composite material on the temperature distributions, deformation, and stress during braking. In this regard, a transient temperature-displacement coupled analysis for C/C composite brake discs with frictional heat generation under simulated operating conditions is performed. An axisymmetric model for brake system is used for the finite element analysis according to the theory of energy transformation and transportation. The transient temperature distributions on the friction surfaces, deformation, and stress are obtained. To check the validity, the results are corroborated with other solutions available in the literature, wherever possible. The current study could be used as a guide in the initial design of a high performance multidisc brake system.

  • Since coaxial magnetic gears use non-contact power transmission, friction, wear, noise, and heat generated in the power transmission process of existing mechanical gears can be minimized. Currently, research for application to various industries is being actively conducted, but among the characteristics of coaxial magnetic gears, the problem of rapidly decreasing torque density at a high gear ratio was discussed. This paper proposes a direction for multiple gear combination using low gear ratio coaxial magnetic gears with high torque density. In order to confirm the effectiveness of the method, the torque density was compared with a single high gear ratio model, and the combination and design direction of multiple coaxial magnetic gears were shown.
