Accurate actuator tracking is critical to achieve reliable real-time hybrid simulation results for earthquake engineering research. The frequency-domain evaluation approach provides an innovative way for more quantitative post-simulation evaluation of actuator tracking errors compared with existing time domain based techniques. Utilizing the Fast Fourier Transform the approach analyzes the actuator error in terms of amplitude and phrase errors. Existing application of the approach requires using the complete length of the experimental data. To improve the computational efficiency, two techniques including data decimation and frequency decimation are analyzed to reduce the amount of data involved in the frequency-domain evaluation. The presented study aims to enhance the computational efficiency of the approach in order to utilize it for future on-line actuator tracking evaluation. Both computational simulation and laboratory experimental results are analyzed and recommendations on the two decimation factors are provided based on the findings from this study.

A weakly nonlinear seakeeping methodology for predicting motions and loads is presented in this paper. This methodology assumes linear radiation and diffraction forces, calculated in the frequency domain, and fully nonlinear Froude-Krylov and hydrostatic forces, evaluated in the time domain. The particular approach employed here allows to overcome numerical problems connected to the determination of the impulse response functions. The procedure is divided into three consecutive steps: evaluation of dynamic sinkage and trim in calm water that can significantly influence the final results, a linear seakeeping analysis in the frequency domain and a weakly nonlinear simulation. The first two steps are performed employing a three-dimensional Rankine panel method. Nonlinear Froude-Krylov and hydrostatic forces are computed in the time domain by pressure integration on the actual wetted surface at each time step. Although nonlinear forces are evaluated into the time domain, the equations of motion are solved in the frequency domain iteratively passing from the frequency to the time domain until convergence. The containership S175 is employed as a test case for evaluating the capability of this methodology to correctly predict the nonlinear behavior related to wave induced motions and loads in head seas; numerical results are compared with experimental data provided in literature.
The motion of a ship advancing in regular waves is analyzed in the time-domain using the convolution integral of the radiation forces. The memory effect functions and infinite frequency added masses are obtained from the solution of the three dimensional improved Green integral equation in the frequency domain by making use of the Fourier transformation. The ship motions in regular waves have been calculated by both the time and frequency domain methods. It has been shown that they agree very well with each other. The present time-domain method can be used to predict the time histories of unsteady motions in irregular waves. It can also be used to calculate the hydrostatic and Froude-Krylov forces over the instantaneous wetted surface of the ship hull to predict large ship motions, in a practical sense, advancing in large amplitude waves.
In this paper, the method for soil-structure interaction analyses in the time domain is proposed. The far field soil region which is the outside of the artificial boundary is modeled by using explicit frequency-dependent two dimensional infinite elements which can include multiple wave components propagating into the unbounded medium. Since the dynamic stiffness matrix of the far field soil region using the proposed infinite elements is obtained explicitly in terms of exciting frequencies and constants in the frequency domain, the matrix can be easily transformed into the displacement unit-impulse response matrix, which corresponds to a convolution integral of it in the time domain. To verify the proposed method for soil-structure interaction analyses in the time domain, the displacement responses due to an impulse load on the surface of a soil layer with the rigid bed rock are compared with those obtained by the method in the frequency domain and those by models with extend finite element meshes. Good agreements have been found between them.
Seismic qualification of instruments and devices mounted on electrical cabinets in a nuclear power plant is performed in this study by means of the in-cabinet response spectrum (ICRS). A simple method and two rigorous methods are proposed in the EPRI NP-7146-SL guidelines for generating the ICRS. The simple method of EPRI can give unrealistic spectra that are excessively conservative in many cases. In the past, the time domain analysis (TDA) methods have been mostly used to analyze a structure. However, the TDA requires the generation of an artificial earthquake input motion compatible to the target response spectrum. The process of generating an artificial earthquake may involve a great deal of uncertainty. In addition, many time history analyses should be performed to increase the accuracy of the results. This study developed a numerical analysis program for generating the ICRS by frequency domain analysis (FDA) method. The developed program was validated by the numerical study. The ICRS calculated by FDA thoroughly matched with those obtained from TDA. This study then confirms that the method it proposes can simply and efficiently generate the ICRS compared to the time domain method.
In tire presence of incident waves with different frequencies, there are second order sum and difference frequency wave exciting forces due to the nonlinearity of tire incident waves. Although the magnitude of these nonlinear wave forces are small, they act on TLPs at sum and difference frequencies away from those of the incident waves. So, the second order sum and difference frequency waveexciting forces occurring close to tire natural frequencies of TLPs often give greater contributions to high and law frequency resonant responses. Nonlinear motion responses and tension variations in the time domain are analyzed by solving the motion equations with nonlinear wave exciting forces using tire numerical analysismethod. The numerical results of time domain analysis for the nonlinear wave exciting forces on the ISSC TLP in regular waves are compared with the numerical and experimental ones of frequency domain analysis. The results of this comparison confirmed tire validity of the proposed approach.
The energy-transmitting boundary, which is used in the well-known finite element method (FEM) program FLUSH, is quite efficient for the earthquake response analysis of buildings considering soil-structure interaction. However, it is applicable only in the frequency domain. The author proposed methods for transforming frequency dependent impedance into the time domain, and studied the time domain transform of the boundary. In this paper, first, the estimation methods for both the halfspace condition under the bottom of the soil model and the pseudo three-dimensional effect were studied with the time domain transmitting boundary. Next, response behavior when using the boundary was studied in detail using a practical soil and building model. The response accuracy was compared with those using viscous boundary, and the boundary that considers the excavation force. Through these studies, the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed time domain transmitting boundary were confirmed.

Wearable sensor-based gait analysis has been widely conducted to analyze various aspects of human ambulation abilities under the free-living condition. However, there have been few research efforts on using wearable sensors to analyze human walking on an unstable surface such as on a ship during a sea voyage. Since the motion of a ship on the unstable sea surface imposes significant differences in walking strategies, investigation is suggested to find better performing wearable sensor-based gait analysis algorithms on this unstable environment. This study aimed to compare two representative gait event algorithms including time domain and frequency domain analyses for detecting heel strike on an unstable platform. As results, although two methods did not miss any heel strike, the frequency domain analysis method perform better when comparing heel strike timing. The finding suggests that the frequency analysis is recommended to efficiently detect gait event in the unstable walking environment.
Linear and nonlinear time history analyses have been becoming more common in seismic analysis and design of structures with advances in computer technology and earthquake engineering. One of the most important issues for such analyses is the selection of appropriate acceleration time histories and matching these histories to a code design acceleration spectrum. In literature, there are three sources of acceleration time histories: artificial records, synthetic records obtained from seismological models and accelerograms recorded in real earthquakes. Because of the increase of the number of strong ground motion database, using and scaling real earthquake records for seismic analysis has been becoming one of the most popular research issues in earthquake engineering. In general, two methods are used for scaling actual earthquake records: scaling in time domain and frequency domain. The objective of this study is twofold: the first is to discuss and summarize basic methodologies and criteria for selecting and scaling ground motion time histories. The second is to analyze scaling results of time domain method according to ASCE 7-05 and Eurocode 8 (1998-1:2004) criteria. Differences between time domain method and frequency domain method are mentioned briefly. The time domain scaling procedure is utilized to scale the available real records obtained from near fault motions and far fault motions to match the proposed elastic design acceleration spectrum given in the Eurocode 8. Why the time domain method is preferred in this study is stated. The best fitted ground motion time histories are selected and these histories are analyzed according to Eurocode 8 (1998-1:2004) and ASCE 7-05 criteria. Also, characteristics of both near fault ground motions and far fault ground motions are presented by the help of figures. Hence, we can compare the effects of near fault ground motions on structures with far fault ground motions' effects.
The paper deals with an approach to time domain simulation for closed end at the downstream of pipe, hydraulic lines terminating into a tank and series lines with change of cross sectional area. Time domain simulation of a fluid power systems containing hydraulic lines is very complex and difficult if the transfer functions consist of hyperbolic Bessel functions which is the case for the distributed parameter dissipative model. In this paper, the magnitudes and phases of the complex transfer functions of hydraulic lines are calculated, and the MATLAB Toolbox is used to formulate a rational polynomial approximation for these transfer functions in the frequency domain. The approximated transfer functions are accurate over a designated frequency range, and used to analyze the time domain response. This approach is usefully to simulate fluid power systems with hydraulic lines without to approximate the frequency dependent viscous friction.
