  • Radio wave is the valuable resources in $21^{st}$ century. It will be widely used in various applications such as DMB, USN, telematics, and home network as well as mobile and wireless communications. Cognitive Radio technology is devised to maximize the utilization of radio resources by sensing near-by spectrum and dynamic and allocating free resources dynamically and adaptively. Wireless links for the secondary user need to be frequently switched to idle frequencies during the transmission of multimedia data in the cognitive radio based system. This may cause delay and information loss, and QoS degradations occur inevitably. The efficient frequency allocation scheme is necessary to support the seamless multimedia service to the secondary user while maintaining QoS of the primary user. This paper suggests a frequency selection scheme which considers other parameters such as cell load, data rate, and available bandwidth than just received signal strength during the frequency selection process. The performance of our proposed scheme is analyzed by simulation.

  • We consider the optimum power allocation problem for downlink system throughput maximization in a 2 time slotted relay interference channel. Base station (BS) transmits power to Mobile Station (MS) and Relay Station (RS) in time slot 1 (orthogonal channel). In time slot 2, BS and RS transmit power to each MS, while causing cochannel interference to each other. The obtained optimum power allocation scheme allows simultaneous transmissions of BS and RS when the interference level in time slot 2 is low. However, when the interference level is high, RS shuts down its power. Numerical results are provided to support our analysis.

  • This paper formulates resource allocation for decode-and-forward (DF) relay assisted multi-cell orthogonal frequency division multiple (OFDM) networks as an optimization problem taking into account of inter-cell interference and users fairness. To maximize the transmit rate of system we propose a joint interference coordination, subcarrier and power allocation algorithm. To reduce the complexity, this semi-distributed algorithm divides the primal optimization into three sub-optimization problems, which transforms the mixed binary nonlinear programming problem (BNLP) into standard convex optimization problems. The first layer optimization problem is used to get the optimal subcarrier distribution index. The second is to solve the problem that how to allocate power optimally in a certain subcarrier distribution order. Based on the concept of equivalent channel gain (ECG) we transform the max-min function into standard closed expression. Subsequently, with the aid of dual decomposition, water-filling theorem and iterative power allocation algorithm the optimal solution of the original problem can be got with acceptable complexity. The third sub-problem considers dynamic co-channel interference caused by adjacent cells and redistributes resources to achieve the goal of maximizing system throughput. Finally, simulation results are provided to corroborate the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose uncoordinated dynamic frequency(channel) allocation schemes based on cognitive radio in mobile cellular networks(MCNs). Under the assumptions that mobile base stations are equipped with cognitive radio(CR) function and they construct uncoordinated network, the proposed scheme enables the MCNs by suppression of successive channel switching and management of channel allocation in a dynamic and distributed manner. The proposed scheme is composed of two phase processes. In the first phase, highly orthogonal sequences are generated and assigned to mobile base stations. In the second phase, each mobile base station is allocated a channel according to the pre-assigned orthogonal sequences. Simulation results show that the number of successive spectrum switching is reduced significantly compared with the random switching scheme.

  • Cognitive Radio (CR) has very promising potential to improve spectrum utilization by allowing unlicensed Secondary Users (SUs) to access the spectrum dynamically without disturbing licensed Primary Users (PUs). Mitigating interference is a fundamental problem in CR scenarios. This is particularly problematic for deploying CR in cellular networks, when users are located at the cell edge, as the inter-cell interference mitigation and frequency reuse are critical requirements for both PUs and SUs. Further cellular networks require higher cell edge performance, then SUs will meet more challenges than PUs. To solve the performance decrease for SUs at the cell edge, a novel Dynamic Spectrum Allocation (DSA) scheme based on Game Theory is proposed in this paper. Full frequency reuse can be realized as well as inter-cell interference mitigated according to SUs' sensing, measurement and interaction in this scheme. A joint power/channel allocation algorithm is proposed to improve both cell-edge user experience and network performance through distributed pricing calculation and exchange based on game theory. Analytical proof is presented and simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves high efficiency of spectrum usage and improvement of cell edge SUs' performance.

  • OFDM technique uses multiple sub-carriers for the data transmission. Therefore, inter carrier interference is generated because of nonlinear high power amplifier and carrier frequency offset. Wireless OFDM transmission over Doppler fading channels also causes inter carrier interference. The interference increases the bit error rate in receiver. Sub-carrier allocation methods in LTE and WiMAX standards are different. The performance of OFDM systems using different sub-carrier allocation, gauged by the bit error rate, is analyzed considering the nonlinear high power amplifier, carrier frequency offset and Doppler fading channels.

  • This study analyzed the allocation of the skipper's attention during fishing operation in the wheelhouse of a Korean coastal composite fishing vessel by using video observation. To summarize the results, the ratio of lookout, radar and GPS monitoring, which is essential for prevention of collision at sea, was significantly lower than that of other fishing operation due to the attention concentration on the work place during hauling line. In order to reduce exposure to risk of collisions due to concentration of attention to certain tasks such as line hauling, it is necessary to develop an alert system that can notify the approach of other ships or obstruction throughout the ship using information from radar or the automatic identification system. In addition, the order of attention allocation to devices and facilities obtained in this study is expected to be used as basic data for device or facility layout based on the principle of usage frequency in designing wheelhouse for coastal composite fishing vessels in the future.

  • A parallel control strategy in capacity proportion frequency allocation mode for shunt active power filters (APFs) is proposed to overcome some of the difficulties in high power applications. To improve the compensation accuracy and overall system stability, an improved selective harmonic current control based on multiple synchronous rotating reference coordinates is presented in a single APF unit, which approximately implements zero steady-state error compensation. The combined decoupling strategy is proposed and theoretically analyzed to simplify selective harmonic current control. Improved selective harmonic current control forms the basis for multi-APF parallel operation. Therefore, a parallel control strategy is proposed to realize a proper optimization so that the APFs with a larger capacity compensate more harmonic current and the ones with a smaller capacity compensate less harmonic current, which is very practical for accurate harmonic current compensation and stable grid operation in high power applications. This is verified by experimental results. The total harmonic distortion (THD) is reduced from 29% to 2.7% for a typical uncontrolled rectifier load with a resistor and an inductor in a laboratory platform.

  • We consider user pairing and resource allocation for the uplink of cellular systems employing virtual multiple input multiple output (MIMO). As a multiple access scheme, discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiple access (DFTS-OFDMA) is adopted for more flexible resource allocation than single carrier (SC)-OFDMA adopted in the Long Term Evolution (LTE) system. We formulate the optimization problems of user pairing and resource allocation to maximize the throughput of the DFTS-OFDMA system under different constraints. The DFTS-OFDMA allowing non-contiguous subcarrier allocation and redundant user assignment provides a better throughput than the SC-FDMA at lower complexity in finding the optimal solution but at the cost of the increased control information indicating the allocated resources.
