  • In connection to the design of high speed vessels, the numerical simulation is carried out to make clear the property of flows and breaking phenomena around the catamaran. It is because the bradking phenome-non is closely related to the free-surface turbulent flow. The free-surface wave and transverse velocity vectors are calculated around the twin and demi hull of the catamaran. Computed results are applied to detect the appearance of sub-breaking waves around the hull. The critical condition for their appearance is studied at two Froude numbers of 0.45 and 0.95. The nu-merical analysis shows that the breaking is more serious near the twin hull rather the demi hull. To simu-late the flows, the Navier-Stokes solver is invoked with a free-surface. The computation is made only in half a domain because it is symmetric in the shape.

  • Marine analysis was made to investigate the hydrodynamic effects of a Wing in Ground (WIG) by means of finite difference techniques. The air flow field around WIG is analyzed by the Marker & Cell (MAC) based method, and the interaction between WIG and the free surface are studied by showing pressure distributions above the free surface. In the latter part, computations are extended to make clear the flow characteristics of a high speed catamaran in the rang of Froude numbers 0.2 to 1.0 with a separation to length ratios of 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5. The Navier-Stokes solver is invoked in which the nonlinear free-surface boundary condition is applied. For the validation, computational results are compared with the experiments.

  • In large pump station, vortex generation such as free-surface vortex and submerged vortex occurring around pump intake, or at bell-mouth inlet has been an important flow characteristics which should be considered always to keep away the suction of air-entrained or cavitated flow. In this study, a commercial CFD code was used to predict accurately the vortex generation for the specified intake design. These result shows the preliminary result of submerged vortex prediction for the Turbo-machinery Society of Japan Sump Test CFD standard model. At bottom wall, air volume fraction (red color) was found in a large scale to explain the submerged vortex generation at particular operation and configuration condition. And these indicate the free surface formation behind the bell mouth. Particularly, non-uniform approaching flow is a major parameter to govern the occurrence of the free-surface vortex. Futhermore the comparison between turbulence ($k-{\epsilon}$ & $k-{\omega}$ model) mode were executed in this study.

  • The radiation problem for an oscillating cylinder advancing under the free surface with a constant horizontal velocity is studied using the Green integral equation in the frequency domain. The Green function expressed in terms of the complex exponential, is derived using the damped free surface condition. Special attention is given to the behavior of the numerical solution in the vicinity of the critical Brard number ${\gamma}_c=\omega{\cdot}u/g=0.25$ where $\omega$ is the circular frequency of encounter, u the advancing speed and g the gravitational acceleration. It is shown that the solution is finite in the vicinity of ${\gamma}_c$ although the Green function becomes singular at ${\gamma}_c$. It is also shown that the computed hydrodynamic coefficients agree well with those obtained from the solution of the same problem formulated in the time domain.

  • The ship wave phenomena in the restricted waterway were investigated by a numerical analysis. The Euler and continuity equations were employed for the present study. The boundary fitted and moving grid system was adopted to enhance the computational efficiency. The convective terms in the governing equations and the kinematic free surface boundary condition were solved by the Constrained Interpolated Profile (CIP) algorithm in order to solve accurately wave heights in far field as well as near field. The advantage of the CIP method was verified by the comparison of the computed results by the CIP and the Maker and Cell (MAC) method. The free surface flow simulation around Wigley hull was performed and compared with the experiment for the sake of the validation of the numerical method. The present numerical scheme was applied to the free surface simulation for various canal sections in order to understand the effect of the sectional shape of waterways on the ship waves. The wave heights on the side wall and the shape of the wave patterns with their characteristics of flow are discussed.

  • Gates for the purpose of drainage are classified following the types of structure as: Radial Gate, Sluice Gate, Rolling Gate, Drum Gate. In many cases of the reclamation project the sluice type of gates are applied. Different from this general trend, however the radial type of gate was adopted in the Saemangeum project. In this case the discharge coefficients which are used for the sluice type of gate was applied. To estimate the correct amount of discharge which will be evacuated through the gates, therefore the proper discharge coefficients should be estimated before the operation of the gates. The discharge coefficients were estimated through the physical hydraulic modeling, and we got the results as: $0.72{\sim}0.84$ for the submerged condition on the both sides of upstream and downstream, $0.62{\sim}0.83$ for the free surface condition on the downtream side only, and $1.04{\sim}1.12$ for the free surface condition on the both sides of upstream and downstream. The discharge coefficients obtained from the experiments are greater than those of the sluice gates in the design criteria. From the results of the study we may expect that in the Saemangeum project the radial gates could evacuate larger amount of discharge than the originally designed discharge, so that we may sure that the Saemangeum gates have enough capability to control the evacuation of water not only in the usual period but also in the flooding season.

  • In the present study, a new hull panel generation algorithm, namely panel cutting method, was developed to predict flow phenomena around a ship using the Rankine source potential based panel method, where the iterative method was used to satisfy the nonlinear free surface condition and the trim and sinkage of the ship was taken into account. Numerical computations were performed to investigate the validity of the proposed hull panel generation algorithm for Series 60 ($C_B$=0.60) hull and KRISO container ship (KCS), a container ship designed by Maritime and Ocean Engineering Research Institute (MOERI). The computational results were validated by comparing with the existing experimental data.

  • The steady breakers at an infant stage are investigated through the numerical simulation. The appearing condition and characteristics of the sub-breaking waves are reviewed by analysing bow waves. The instability analysis is possibly done through the relationship between the free-surface curvature and circumferential force, which is obtained from the momentum equations. Navier-Stokes equations are solved by a finite difference method where the body-fitted coordinate system, the wall function and the advanced mesh system are invoked. The numerical result shows that the gradient of M/$U_s$ is greatly influenced by the Froude number and the decrease of M/$U_s$ indicates that the flows are unstable. Additionally flows with plunging or spilling are simulated successfully, but the application of breakers to the severely broken wave still remains to be settled in the future.
