When a cantilever beam with a lumped mass at its free end undergoes free transverse vibration, internal axial forces are produced in the beam. Such internal axial forces have an effect on free transverse vibration of the beam. This effect is studied in this paper. The equations of motion for the beam in terms of the generalized coordinates including the effect are derived. The method for determining free transverse vibration of the beam including the effect is presented. In numerical simulations, the results of free transverse vibration of the free end of the beam including and not including the effect are obtained. Based on comparison between the results obtained, the conclusions concerning the effect are given.
This paper presents the effect of axial stretching on large amplitude free vibration of an extensible suspended cable supported at the same level. The model formulation developed in this study is based on the virtual work-energy functional of cables which involves strain energy due to axial stretching and work done by external forces. The difference in the Euler equations between equilibrium and motion states is considered. The resulting equations govern the horizontal and vertical motion of the cables, and are coupled and highly nonlinear. The solution for the nonlinear static equilibrium configuration is determined by the shooting method while the solution for the large amplitude free vibration is obtained by using the second-order central finite difference scheme with time integration. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the vibration behaviour of extensible suspended cables.
Multiple-step beams carrying intermediate lumped masses with/without rotary inertias are widely used in engineering applications, but in the literature for free vibration analysis of such structural systems; Bernoulli-Euler Beam Theory (BEBT) without axial force effect is used. The literature regarding the free vibration analysis of Bernoulli-Euler single-span beams carrying a number of spring-mass systems, Bernoulli-Euler multiple-step and multi-span beams carrying multiple spring-mass systems and multiple point masses are plenty, but that of Timoshenko multiple-step beams carrying intermediate lumped masses and/or rotary inertias with axial force effect is fewer. The purpose of this paper is to utilize Numerical Assembly Technique (NAT) and Differential Transform Method (DTM) to determine the exact natural frequencies and mode shapes of the axial-loaded Timoshenko multiple-step beam carrying a number of intermediate lumped masses and/or rotary inertias. The model allows analyzing the influence of the shear and axial force effects, intermediate lumped masses and rotary inertias on the free vibration analysis of the multiple-step beams by using Timoshenko Beam Theory (TBT). At first, the coefficient matrices for the intermediate lumped mass with rotary inertia, the step change in cross-section, left-end support and right-end support of the multiple-step Timoshenko beam are derived from the analytical solution. After the derivation of the coefficient matrices, NAT is used to establish the overall coefficient matrix for the whole vibrating system. Finally, equating the overall coefficient matrix to zero one determines the natural frequencies of the vibrating system and substituting the corresponding values of integration constants into the related eigenfunctions one determines the associated mode shapes. After the analytical solution, an efficient and easy mathematical technique called DTM is used to solve the differential equations of the motion. The calculated natural frequencies of Timoshenko multiple-step beam carrying intermediate lumped masses and/or rotary inertias for the different values of axial force are given in tables. The first five mode shapes are presented in graphs. The effects of axial force, intermediate lumped masses and rotary inertias on the free vibration analysis of Timoshenko multiple-step beam are investigated.
The aim of this present research is the effect of the higher-order terms of the governing equation on the forced longitudinal vibration of a nanorod model and making comparisons of the results with classical nonlocal elasticity theory. For this purpose, the free axial vibration along with forced one under the two various linear and harmonic axial concentrated forces in zigzag Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube (SWCNT) are analyzed dynamically. Three various theories containing the classical theory, which is called Eringen's nonlocal elasticity, along with Rayleigh and Bishop theories (higher-order theories) are established to justify the nonlocal behavior of constitutive relations. The governing equation and the related boundary conditions are derived from Hamilton's principle. The assumed modes method is adopted to solve the equation of motion. For the free axial vibration, the natural frequencies are calculated for the various values of the nonlocal parameter only based on Eringen's theory. The effects of the nonlocal parameter, thickness, length, and ratio of the excitation frequency to the natural frequency over time in dimensional and non-dimensional axial displacements are investigated for the first time.
In this paper, free vibration finite element analysis of axially moving laminated composite beams subjected to axial tension is studied. It is assumed that the beam has a constant axial velocity and is subject to uniform axial tension. The analysis is based on higher-order theories that have been presented by Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). In the CUF technique, the three dimensional (3D) displacement fields are expressed as the approximation of the arbitrary order of the displacement unknowns over the cross-section. This higher-order expansion is considered in equivalent single layer (ESL) model. The governing equations of motion are obtained via Hamilton's principle. Finally, several numerical examples are presented and the effect of the ply-angle, travelling speed and axial tension on the natural frequencies and beam stability are demonstrated.
An artificial neural network (ANN) application is presented for flexural and axial vibration analysis of elastic beams with various support conditions. The first three natural frequencies of beams are obtained using multi layer neural network based back-propagation error learning algorithm. The natural frequencies of beams are calculated for six different boundary conditions via direct solution of governing differential equations of beams and Rayleigh's approximate method. The training of the network has been made using these data only flexural vibration case. The trained neural network, however, had been tested for cantilever beam (C-F), and both end free (F-F) in case the axial vibration, and clamped-clamped (C-C), and Guided-Pinned (G-P) support condition in case the flexural vibrations which were not included in the training set. The results found by using artificial neural network are sufficiently close to the theoretical results. It has been demonstrated that the artificial neural network approach applied in this study is highly successful for the purposes of free vibration analysis of elastic beams.

This work reports results of our study on the dynamic responses of the buried pipelines both along the axial and the transverse directions under various boundary end conditions. We have considered three cases, i.e., the free ends, the fixed ends, and the fixed-free ends. We have studied the seismic responses of the buried pipelines with the various boundary end conditions both along the axial and the transverse direction. We have considered three cases, i.e., the free ends, the fixed ends, and the fixed-free ends for the axial direction, and three more cases including the guided ends, the simply supported ends, and the supported-guided ends for the transverse direction. The buried pipelines are modeled as beams on elastic foundation while the seismic waves as a ground displacement in the form of a sinusoidal wave. The natural frequency and its mode, and the effect of parameters have been interpreted in terms of free vibration. The natural frequency varies most significantly by the soil stiffness and the length of the buried pipelines in the case of free vibration, which increases with increasing soil stiffness and decreases with increasing length of the buried pipeline. Such a behavior appears most prominently along the axial rather than the transverse direction of the buried pipelines. The resulting frequencies and the mode shapes obtained from the free vibration for the various boundary end conditions of the pipelines have been utilized to derive the mathematical formulae for the displacements and the strains along the axial direction, and the displacements and the bending strains along the transverse direction in case of the forced vibration. The negligibly small difference of 6.2% between our result and that of Ogawa et. al. (2001) for the axial strain with a one second period confirms the accuracy of our approach in this study.

The present study investigates axial vibration of a FG nanobeam using nonlocal elasticity theory under clamped-clamped and clamped-free boundary conditions. Power law, exponential law and sigmoid law are applied as grading laws to examine the effect of the material distribution on axial vibration of the FG nanobeam. A parametric study was done to examine the effect of length scale on the dynamic behavior of the structure and the results are presented. It was observed that consideration of the nonlocal length scale is essential when analyzing the free vibration of a FG nanobeam. The results of the present study can be used as benchmarks in future studies of FG nanostructures.
This paper presents a new nonlocal stress variational principle approach for the transverse free vibration of an Euler-Bernoulli cantilever nanobeam with an initial axial tension at its free end. The effects of a nanoscale at molecular level unavailable in classical mechanics are investigated and discussed. A sixth-order partial differential governing equation for transverse free vibration is derived via variational principle with nonlocal elastic stress field theory. Analytical solutions for natural frequencies and transverse vibration modes are determined by applying a numerical analysis. Examples conclude that nonlocal stress effect tends to significantly increase stiffness and natural frequencies of a nanobeam. The relationship between natural frequency and nanoscale is also presented and its significance on stiffness enhancement with respect to the classical elasticity theory is discussed in detail. The effect of an initial axial tension, which also tends to enhance the nanobeam stiffness, is also concluded. The model and approach show potential extension to studies in carbon nanotube and the new result is useful for future comparison.

The maximum and mean indicated pressure of two stroke low speed diesel engine has been continuously increased with a view of increasing engine power and also reducing fuel consumption. As a result, axial excitation has been increased comparing to that of the previous one. So the axial vibration damper in standard one is applied to all two stroke low speed diesel engine at the free end of crankshaft. Though many studies were carried out for marine use, few has been made for diesel power plant because there was little demand for power plant. Nowadays, diesel engine is much to be used for many benefits. In this paper, the optimum design of axial vibration on the 65 kW diesel power plant with tow 9K80MC-S engines of 9 cylinders was carried out. And the axial-torsional coupled vibration of this shafting system is identified by theoretical analysis and vibration measurement.
