Precast large panel structures behave differently form frame and monolithic wall structures under external loads, because of the distinct planes of weakness in the horizontal and vertical joints between panels. These joints may slide and open during shaking, producing large localized changes in the bending and shear stiffness of individual walls. The structural behavior of large precast panel buildings depends on the relative strength and stiffness of the panels and joints. Special modeling are thus required for the analysis of precast panel connections. This study suggests a new analytical modeling and method to obtain the rational estimation of discontinuity and slip movements form the connections of precast large panel structures .
The tube structures act like cantilevered box beams and effectively resist lateral loads. In result, they are adopted as a high-rise buildings system. However, the shear lag in tube system prevents the idealized tube behavior such as a cantilevered box beam. Therefore, the studies on shear lag phenomena are necessarily requested. The presented papers are almost studied on framed tube structures and tube in tube structures. However, the study on the shear lag in the tube structure with core wall is lack. Thus, in this paper, the shear lag of the structure is studied. The shear lag coefficient is defined to investigate shear lag phenomena. However, existing shear lag coefficients are not adequate for understanding them. Therefore, on this study, new shear lag coefficient is suggested. In addition, the shear lag in the tube structure with core wall is analyzed by changing the five structural parameters of stiffness factor in frame, stiffness factor in wall, stiffness ratio, the number of stories and the number of bays.
In order to improve the seismic behaviors of traditional steel-concrete mixed structure, a novel steel concrete mixed structure consisting of steel frames braced with buckling restrained braces (BRBs) and a concrete tube is proposed. Based on several assumptions, the simplified mechanical model of the novel mixed structure is established, and the shear and bending stiffness formulas of the steel frames, BRBs and concrete tube are respectively introduced. The equilibrium differential equation of the novel mixed structure under horizontal load is developed based on the structural elastic theory. The simplified algorithms to determine the lateral displacement and internal forces of the novel mixed structure under the inverted-triangle distributed load, uniformly load and top-concentrated load are then obtained considering several boundary conditions and compatible deformation conditions. The effectiveness of the simplified algorithms is verified by FEM comparison.
This paper presents a brief overview of the recently developed performance-control method of moment frame design subjected to monotonously increasing lateral loading. The final product of any elastic-plastic analysis is a nonlinear loaddisplacement diagram associated with a progressive failure mechanism, which may or may not be as desirable as expected. Analytically derived failure mechanisms may include such undesirable features as soft story failure, partial failure modes, overcollapse, etc. The problem is compounded if any kind of performance control, e.g., drift optimization, material savings or integrity assessment is also involved. However, there is no reason why the process can not be reversed by first selecting a desirable collapse mechanism, then working backwards to select members that would lead to the desired outcome. This article provides an overview of the newly developed Performance control methodology of design for lateral resisting frameworks with a view towards integrity control and prevention of premature failure due to propagation of plasticity and progressive P-delta effects.
The purpose of this study is to explore an inquisitive and innovative approach to structure and form, Calatrava's morphogenetic mechanism and to trace the ideas behind his working methods and his theoretical preoccupations. The bridges and buildings of S. Calatrava possess a breathtaking rhythm and of them some are designed to expand and contract like living organisms. The analogy Calatrava has used as a creative tool to mutate human bodies into arcing roof forms and bridge suspensions is introduced to illustrate the morphogenetic process. At the same time, the analysis used developing how to design frame structures foldable with brilliant mathematical solution is also investigated. Consequently, the potentialities of Calatrava's morphogenetic mechanism to invent new systems are generated by methodological hypothesis; analysis and analogy.
In the current research, a seismic ceiling system as one of non-structural elements in buildings has been developed by applying newly designed vertical hanger clips combined with M-bar channel clips. In order to evaluate the seismic performance of the developed system, full-scale shaking table tests of one story frame structure with the conventional ceiling system or the developed seismic ceiling system were performed with time-history responses under earthquake loads. The developed system was also evaluated by the time-history dynamic analysis. From seismic test and analysis, it was shown that the developed seismic ceiling system could give improved seismic performances to minimize displacements and damages of ceiling systems as well as enhance seismic safety of the ceiling system.
Structures of steel frame buildings getting vary depending on the development of construction technology. Fire-resistant steel beams and Columns accredited by accreditation bodies from the performance of various fire-resistant coating is applied to the current pillar method is most H-beams. H-beam has been proposed a non-load test specifications in the relevant regulations, its scope of accreditation to be granted without limitation of size H-beams from the performance of the test specification. However, in the case of the rectangular steel structure is to check its performance and to a separate one of the receive acknowledge and so take advantage of the cross-sectional shape factor in this study to test the performance of the fire-resistant structure proposed for standard test specimen.
The use of supplemental damping to dissipate seismic energy is one of the most economical and effective ways to mitigate the effects of earthquakes on structures. Both displacement-dependent and velocity-dependent devices dissipate earthquake-induced energy effectively. Combining displacement-dependent and velocity-dependent devices for seismic mitigation of structures minimizes the shortcomings of individual dampers, and is the most economical solution for seismic mitigation. However, there are few publications related to the optimum distributions of combined devices in a multiple-bay frame building. In this paper, the effectiveness of a building consisting of multiple bags equipped with combined displacement-dependent and velocity-dependent devices is investigated. A four-story building with six bays was selected as an example to examine the efficiency of the proposed combination methods. The parametric study shows that appropriate arrangements of different kinds of devices make the devices more efficient and economical.
The response of single story buildings and other case studies are investigated to observe trends in response and to develop a better understanding of the impact of some design parameters on the seismic response of CBF. While it is recognized that many parameters have an influence on the behavior of braced frames, the focus of this study is mostly on quantifying energy dissipation in compression and its effectiveness on seismic performance. Based on dynamic analyses of single story braced frame and case studies, it is found that a bracing member designed with bigger R and larger KL/r results in lower normalized cumulative energy, i.e., cumulative compressive energy normalized by the corresponding tensile energy (${\sum}E_C/E_T$), in both cases.
The safety of buildings is generally estimated by analyzing a plane frame ignoring a minor bending moment. In this paper, uncertainties of reinforced concrete shear wall subjected to a biaxial bending are considered. First, major parameters are selected from all parameters of general shear wall design to perform a reliability analysis in their practical ranges, means and standard derivations of selected design parameters for the reliability analysis are calculated by a data mining as a simulation method. The bi-section method is used to find inclined neutral axis and its limit state using MATLAB subjected to the concept on strength design method. The reliability index $\beta$ as a safety index is calculated based on AFOSM(Advanced First-Order Second Moment) method. Also, if target reliability index $\beta_T$ is decided by an engineer an amount of reinforcement can be calculated by subtracting the reliability index $\beta$ from the target reliability index $\beta_T$.
