The wear characteristics of the gold alloy dental prosthesis have been investigated. The wear tests were performed by using a pin-on-disk wear tester at room temperature. Vickers hardness and fracture toughness measurement of dental materials were preformed. Microscopic observations on worn surfaces of specimens were conducted by microscope. The friction coefficient of the gold alloy dental prosthesis was investigated according to weight and slinging velocity. The hardness of the gold alloy dental prosthesis were similar and a half of the enamel of natural teeth.

Experimental results for variation of concrete strength according to vibration time control for fresh concrete were given. Vibration velocity, time before vibration and vibrating time were used as experimental parameters. Compressive strength, split tensile strength, ana bond strength were investigated and then fracture surfaces of split tensile strength specimen were observed. From the experimental results, it could be concluded that there may be no decrease in concrete strengths if time before vibration will be sustained at least for more than 3 hours.
A two dimensional elasto-plastic finite element program taking into account contact between crack surfaces if developed in order to analyze subsurface cracking in rolling contact. But the friction between upper and lower surface of the crack is not considered. Under the assumptions of small deformation and small displacement, the incremental theory of plasticity is used to describe plastic deformation. J-integral is computed as the applied Hertzian load slides over the surface with friction. J-integral is correlated with wear rate of the rail. The propagation rate of the right tip of the surface crack is fast by 45% than that of the left side.
Statement of Problem. Endodontically treated teeth frequently required posts and cores to provide retention and resistance form for crowns. In spite of excellent mechanical properties of metal post and core, its metallic color can be detected through all ceramic restorations occasionally. To solve esthetic problems of metal post and core zirconia post system has been introduced recently. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to examine the fracture strength and mode of resin root analogs restored with zirconia, gold and titanium posts with resin, ceramic and metal cores after cementation with metal crowns. Materials and methods. To avoid the morphological variations of natural teeth, 40 root analogs were fabricated with composite resin. Forty resin root analogs were randomly assigned to four groups according to post and core materials: Group A: cast gold post and core and complete cast crowns, as control. Group B: titanium posts (Parapost, Coltent/Whaledent Inc., NJ, USA) and composite resin cores. Group C: zirconia posts (Cosmopost, Ivoclar AG, Schaan/Liechtenstein) and composite resin cores Group D: zirconia posts and heat-pressed ceramic cores (IPS Empress Cosmo Ingots, Ivoclar AG) After thermocycling ($5^{\circ}C{\sim}55^{\circ}C$, 30 sec.), cyclic loading was applied at 3mm below the incisal edge on the palatal surfaces at an angle of 135 degree to the long axis (2Hz, 50N, 50000cycles). Fracture strength was measured by universal testing machine (Instron, High Wycombe, UK) and fracture pattern of restored resin root analogs was also evaluated. Results and conclusion. Within the limitations of this study following results were drawn. 1. Resin root analogs restored with zirconia posts and composite resins demonstrated lowest fracture strength among tested groups. 2. There was no significant difference in the fracture strength between zirconia posts and heat pressed glass ceramic cores and cast gold posts and cores 3. The fracture strength of resin root analogs restored with titanium posts and composite resin cores was lower than that of gold posts and cores. 4. The deep oblique fracture lines were dominantly observed in root analogs restored with cast gold post and core and zirconia post and heat-pressed ceramic core groups.
Dental ceramics have good aesthetics, biocompatibility, low thermal conductivity, abrasion resistance, and color stability. However poor resistance to fracture and shrinkage during firing process have been limiting factors in their use, particularly in multiunit ceramic restorations. A new method for making all-ceramic crowns that have high strength and low processing shrinkage has been developed and is referred to as the Vita In-Ceram method. This study was performed to investigate the effect of $CeO_2$ addition in borosilicate glasses on the strength of alumina-glass composites. Porous alumina compacts were prepared by slip casting and sintered at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Dense composites were made by infiltration of molten glass into partially sintered alumina at $1,140^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. Specimens were polished sequentially from #800 to #2000 diamond disk. and the final surface finishing on the tensile side was received an additional polishing sequence through $1{\mu}m$ diamond paste. Biaxial flexure test was conducted by using ball-on-three-ball method at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. To examine the microstructural aspect of crack propagation in the alumina-glass composites, Vickers-produced indentation crack was made on the tensile surface at a load of 98.0 N and dwell time of 15 sec, and the radial crack patterns were examined by an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The porosity rates of partially sintered alumina decreased with the rising of firing temperature. 2. The maximum biaxial flexure strength of 423.5MPa in alumina-glass composites was obtained with an addition of 3 mol% $CeO_2$ in glass composition and strength values showed the aspect of decrease with the increase of $CeO_2$ content. 3 The biaxial flexure strength values of alumina-glass composites were decreased with rising the firing temperature. 4. Observation of the fracture surfaces of alumina-glass composites indicated that the enhancement of strength in alumina-glass composites was due to the frictional or geometrical inter-locking of rough fracture surfaces and ligamentary bridging by intact islands of materials left behind the fracture front.
The pupose of this study was to compare the fracture strength of five kinds of all-ceramic crowns(Vintage, Dicor Empress-staining, Empress-layering, In-Ceram) luted with glass ionomer cerment and composite resin cement and to evaluate the effect of cements on the fracture stregth of all ceramic crowns. Five groups of twelve uniform sized all-ceramic crown specimens were fabricated. Six specimens of each group were cemented with glass ionomer cement(Fuji G.I. Cement) and the remaining six specimens of each group were etched, silane-treated, and cemented with composite resin cement(Bistite resin cement). The crowns were stored in water$(37^{\circ}C)$ for 1 day prior to loading in an Instron, using a steel ball(diameter 4mm) at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. The crowns were angled $30^{\circ}$, so the steel ball contacted with the crowns 2mm lingual from the mid-incisal edge. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. With G.I. cement, mean fracture load(Kg) Were : Intage : $18.33{\pm}1.47$ ; Empress-staining : $23.92{\pm}6.67$ ; Dicor : $24.0{\pm}5.81$ ; Empress-layering : $26.92{\pm}2.80$ ; In-Ceram : $51.58{\pm}6.87$ ; ANOVA revealed a significant difference existed(p<0.05) between the group A(Vintage, Dicor, Empress-staining, Empress-layering) and group B(In-Ceram). 2. With Resin cement, mean fracture load(Kg) were : Intage : $22.75{\pm}4.97$ ; Dicor : $42.75{\pm}7.07$ ; Empress-staining : $44.08{\pm}7.99$ ; Empresslayering : $50.42{\pm}5.43$ ; In-Ceram : $52.58{\pm}6.51$ ; ANOVA revealed a significatnt difference existed(p<0.05) between the group A(Vintage) and B(Dicor, Empress-staining Empress-alyering, In-Ceram). 3. Resin cement significantly increased the fracture strength of the all-ceramic crowns for Dicor(156%), Empress-staining(185%), Empress-alyering(187%)(p<0.05); but did not increase the fracture strength of Vintage(128%) and In-Ceram(101%)(p>0.05). 4. Majority of the all-ceramic crowns show a wedge fracture extending through proximal surfaces to an apex, usually apical third(with G.I. cement) or middle third(with Resin cement) of the facial surface.
This study aimed to assess the influence of different cross-sectional area on the cyclic fatigue fracture of Ni-Ti rotary files using a fatigue tester incorporating cyclical axial movement. Six brands of Ni-Ti rotary files (ISO 30 size with. 04 taper) of 10 each were tested: Alpha system (KOMET), HeroShaper (MicroMega), K3 (SybronEndo), Mtwo (VDW), NRT (Mani), and ProFile (Dentsply). A fatigue-tester (Denbotix) was designed to allow cyclic tension and compressive stress on the tip of the instrument. Each file was mounted on a torque controlled motor (Aseptico) using a 1:20 reduction contra-angle and was rotated at 300 rpm with a continuous, 6 mm axial oscillating motion inside an artificial steel canal. The canal had a $60^{\circ}$ angle and a 5 mm radius of curvature. Instrument fracture was visually detected and the time until fracture was recorded by a digital stop watch. The data were analyzed statistically. Fractographic analysis of all fractured surfaces was performed to determine the fracture modes using a scanning electron microscope. Cross-sectional area at 3 mm from the tip of 3 unused Ni-Ti instruments for each group was calculated using Image-Pro Plus (Imagej 1.34n, NIH). Results showed that NRT and ProFile had significantly longer time to fracture compared to the other groups (p < .05). The cross-sectional area was not significantly associated with fatigue resistance. Fractographycally, all fractured surfaces demonstrated a combination of ductile and brittle fracture. In conclusion, there was no significant relationship between fatigue resistance and the cross-sectional area of Ni-Ti instruments under experimental conditions.
Statement of problem : The joints of removable partial denture alloys have failed frequently after routine usage. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties of the laser welded Co-Cr alloys. Material and method : For this study 20 Co-Cr specimens were casted and 10 of them were seperated on the middle area and laser welded with Alpha laser welding machine(Siro Lasertec, Pforzheim, Germany). Rest of them which were as cast, were used as a control group. For the section of the experimental specimens, wire cutting machine was used to make a even gap of the all specimens. Laser welding was done with manufacturer's instrunction and tested each specimen by Instron Machine. Tensile strength, 0.2% yield strength and % elongations were recorded. Fractured surfaces were investigated with SEM. Results : The results were as follows : 1. The tensile strength of the laser welded group(617.7MPa) was about 75% of the as cast group(820.4MPa). It had stastically significant differences(p<0.05). 2. The % elongation of the experimental group was 6.6 which was lower than the control group(14.3). 3. Fracture of the experimental group occured in the welded surface and showed many voids. In contrast, the fracture surface of the control group was showed rough surfaces without any voids. Conclusion : The tensile strengths of the as-cast joints were higher than those for the laser welded joints, and the % elongation of the experimental group was lower than the control group. Porosity was found in laser-welded joints.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of hydrofluoric acid concentration & etching time on the shear bond strength between IPS Empress 2 ceramic and resin cement. Material and methods: Thirty three rectangular shape ceramic specimens($20{\times}12{\times}5mm$ size, IPS Empress 2 core materials) were used for this study. The ceramic specimens divided into ten experimental groups with three specimens in each group and were etched with hydrofluoric acid(4%, 9%) according to different etching times(30s, 60s, 90s, 120s, 180s). Etched surfaces of ceramic specimens were bonded with resin cement(Rely X Unicorn) using acrylic glass tube. All cemented specimens were tested under shear loading until fracture on universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min and the maximum load at fracture(kg) was recorded. Collected shear bond strength data were analyzed with one way ANOVA and Duncan tests. All etched ceramic surfaces were examined morphologically using SEM(scanning electron microscopy). Results: Shear bond strength of etching group$(35.89{\sim}68.01MPa)$ had four to seven times greater than no-etching group$(9.53{\pm}2.29MPa)$. The ceramic specimen etched with 4% hydrofluoric acid for 60s showed the maximum shear bond strength$(68.01{\pm}11.78MPa)$. Ceramic surface etched with 4% hydrofluoric acid for 60s showed most retentive surface texture. Conclusion: It is considered that 60s etching with 4% hydrofluoric acid is optimal etching methods for IPS Empress 2 ceramic bonding.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate effect of aging and thermocycling on the tensile strength of restorative composite resins. Eight commercially available light-cured restorative composites (Heliomolar: HM, Palfique Estelite: PE, Spectrum: ST, UniFil-F: UF, Z100: ZH, Clearfil AP-X: CA, P60: PS, and Palfique Toughwell: PT) were selected as experimental materials. Rectangular-shaped tensile test specimens were fabricated in a teflon mold giving 5 mm in gauge length and 2 mm in thickness. All samples were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 100 days. Every 10 days, specimens were thermocycled for 1,000 cycles with 15 seconds of dwelling time in each $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ water baths. Tensile testing was carried out at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min and fracture surfaces were observed with a scanning electron microscope. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The strength degradation of thermocycled group was severer than that of the aged group (P<0.01). 2. The tensile strength of the CA and ST groups were significantly higher than that of other groups after thermocycling treatment (P<0.05). 3. Fracture surfaces showed that the composite resin failure developed along the matrix and the filler/resin interface region.
