  • The high-strength aluminum alloy 7075-T651 was used to observe the fatigue-crack-propagation behavior for the various stress ratios with constant amplitude loading and thus to predict the fatigue life. With a chevron notch in the specimen the fatigue-crack-propagation behavior of through crack was investigated. Crack propagation behavior of through crack in the depth direction and crack growth of weldments were experimentally studied. Base material heat affected zone and weld material were considered in the fracture of weldments. The change of crack-propagation length with respect to several parameters such as stress intensity factor range(ΔK) effective stress intensity factor range(ΔKeff)ration of effective stress intensity factor range(U) stress intensity factor of crack opening point(K op) maximum stress intensity factor(K max) and number of cycles(Nf)was determined. The crack length of through crack of weldments was 2.4mm and the remaining part was a base material. The experiment was accomplished by making the crack propagate near the base material.

  • Multi-storey frame structures are frequently exposed to static and dynamic forces. Therefore analyses of static (buckling) and dynamic stability come into prominence for these structures. In this study, the effects of number of storey, static and dynamic load parameters, crack depth and crack location on the in-plane static and dynamic stability of cracked multi-storey frame structures subjected to periodic loading have been investigated numerically by using the Finite Element Method. A crack element based on the Euler beam theory is developed by using the principles of fracture mechanics. The equation of motion for the cracked multi-storey frame subjected to periodic loading is achieved by Lagrange's equation. The results obtained from the stability analysis are presented in three dimensional graphs and tables.

  • Interfacial crack problems between fiber and matrix in composite materials are discussed. A series of interfacial crack initiation and propagation experiments are conducted using the biaxial loading device for various mode-mixes. Normal crack opening displacement (NCOD) is measured near crack front by a crack opening interferometry and used for extracting fracture parameters. From mixed mode interfacial crack initiation experiments, large increase in toughness with shear components is observed. Initial velocity of crack propagation is very dependent upon the mode-mixes. It increased with positive mode-mix due to the increase of stress singularities ahead of crack front and decreased with negative mode-mix resulting from the increase of the degree of compressive stress behind the crack front. Crack propagation was less accelerated with positive mode-mix than the negative mode-mix.

  • The interests on GaAs solar cell grown on Ge substrates as an alternative of GaAs substrate arises from its very close lattice parameters, very small difference in thermal expansion coefficients, and much higher fracture toughness between GaAs and Ge. In addition, for many space power application, it would be a most attractive solar cell with high radiation resistance of GaAs and high reliability for the reverse current damage of Ge, and expecting the theoretical efficiency limit of the tandem GaAs/Ge solar cell is 34% under 1 Sun, AM 0, and 28$^{\circ}C$ condition. In this report, we have reviewed the performance and the manufacturing technics of GaAs/Ge solar cell, and current status of research in GaAs/Ge solar cell.

  • The aim of present study is to investigate the effect of welding parameters and heat treatment conditions on the formability of the $CO_2$ laser welded silicon steel sheet. It was found that there is optimum range of the heat input ($0.6{\sim}0.7kJ/cm$) and gap distance ($0.125{\sim}0.150mm$) for the high tensile strength and the avoidance of the fracture in weld metal. Also, it was essential fur the improvement of formability to perform pre- and post-welding heat treatment which cause the uniform mixture of base metal and welding consumable.

  • Fluxless flip chip bonding process using plasma treatment instead of flux was investigated. The effect of plasma process parameters on tin-oxide etching characteristics were estimated with Auger depth profile analysis. The die shear test was performed to evaluate the adhesion strength of the flip chip bonded after plasma treatment. The thickness of oxide layer on tin surface was reduced after Ar+H2 plasma treatment. The addition of H2 improved the oxide etching characteristics by plasma. The die shear strength of the plasma-treated Sn-Pb solder flip chip was higher than that of non-treated one but lower than that of fluxed one. The difference of the strength between plasma-treated specimen and non-treated one increased with increase in bonding temperature. The plasma-treated flip chip fractured at solder/TSM interface at low bonding temperature while the fracture occurred at solder/UBM interface at higher bonding temperature.

  • It has been well known that ductile fracture of steels is accelerated by triaxial stresses. The characteristics of ductile crack initiation in steels are evaluated quantitatively using two-parameters criterion based on equivalent plastic strain and stress triaxiality. This study provides the fundamental clarification of the effect of strength mismatching, which can elevate plastic constraint due to heterogeneous plastic straining, loading mode and loading rate on critical condition to initiate ductile crack from notch root using equivalent plastic strain and stress triaxiality based on the two-parameter criterion obtained on homogeneous specimens under static tension. The critical condition to initiate ductile crack from notch root for strength mismatched bend specimens under both static and dynamic loading would be almost the same as that for homogeneous tensile specimens with circumferential sharp notch under static loading.

  • An experimental study was performed to examine the feasibility of using silicic wastes as construction materials for civil structures, and investigate its utility as a replacement for the favored nature resource to prevent the economic loss. In order to achieve this objective, mechnical properties of concrete containing silicic wastes is tested by investigating the strength development through parameters of water-binder ratios replacement 10 percent ratio with respect to curting conditions. The effect of stringth development is investigated for curing conditions when silicic wastes of 10 percent of cement-binder ratios is containde. Comparision on compressive strength of normal concrete and concrete containing silicic wastes at 28 day is conducted. The concrete with silicic wastes have larger compressive strength than of normal concrete by about 20 percent, when cured at 80 degree. The wastes concrete using silica sand shows increased strength, fracture toughness, elastic modulus and strain than the normal concrete, although the silicic wastes concrete could be able to satisfy the generally required strength for conventional concrete structures.

  • This Study was conducted to evaluate structural integrity and crack source location of RC structures strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plates using acoustic, Four pont bending tests were carried out RC reinforced with C.F.R.P for the several strengthening specimens, the process of fracture was monitored by Acoustic Emission and duration and energy in AE parameters were analyzed. The location and propagation of crack could be easily determined by monitoring AE, which concluded that AE technique could be a very useful tool to evaluate structural integrity of reinforced RC structure.
