Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine combines the combustion characteristics of a compression ignition engine and a spark ignition engine. HCCI engines take advantage of the high compression ratio and heat release rate and thus exhibit high efficiency found in compression ignition engines. In modern research, simulation has be come a powerful tool as it saves time and also economical when compared to experimental study. Engine simulation has been developed to predict the performance of a homogeneous charge compression ignition engine. The effects of compression ratio, cylinder pressure, rate of pressure rise, flame temperature, rate of heat release, and mass fraction burned were simulated. The simulation and analysis show several meaningful results. The objective of the present study is to develop a combustion characteristics model for a homogeneous charge compression ignition engine running with isooctane as a fuel and effect of compression ratio.

Nanofluids have anomalously high thermal conductivities at very low fraction, strongly temperature-dependent and size-dependent conductivities, and three-fold higher critical heat flux than that of base fluids. Traditional conductivity theories such as the Maxwell or other macroscale approaches cannot explain why nanofluids have these intriguing features. So in this paper, we devise a theoretical model that accounts for the fundamental role of dynamic nanoparticles in nanofluids. The proposed model not only captures the concentration and temperature-dependent conductivity, but also predicts strongly size-dependent conductivity. Furthermore, we physically explain the new phenomena for nanofluids. In addition, based on a proposed model, the effects of various parameters such as the ratio of thermal conductivity of nanofluids to that of a base fluid, volume fraction, nanoparticle size, and temperature on the thermal conductivities of nanofluids are investigated.
Investigators have been perplexed with the thermal phenomena behind the recently discovered nanofluids, fluids with unprecedented stability of suspended nanoparticles although huge difference in the density of nanoparticles and fluid. For example, nanofluids have anomalously high thermal conductivities at very low fraction, strongly temperature-dependent and size-dependent conductivities, and three-fold higher critical heat flux than that of base fluids.
The characteristics of flow around a single obstacle with fixed height and varied length and width are numerically investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. As the obstacle length increases, flow distortion near the upwind side of the obstacle increases and the size of the recirculation zone behind the obstacle also increases. As the obstacle width increases, the size of the recirculation zone decreases, despite almost invariable flow distortion near the upwind side of the obstacle. Flow passing through an obstacle is separated, one part going around the obstacle and the other crossing over the obstacle. The size of the recirculation zone is determined by the distance between the obstacle and the point (reattachment point) at which both the flows converge. When the obstacle width is relatively large, flows are reattached at the obstacle surface and their recoveries occur. Resultant shortening of the paths of flows crossing over and going around decreases the size of the recirculation zone. To support this, the extent of flow distortion defined based on the change in wind direction is analyzed. The result shows that flow distortion is largest near the ground surface and decreases with height. An increase in obstacle length increases the frontal area fraction of flow distortion around the obstacle. In the cases of increasing the width, the frontal area fraction near the upwind side of the obstacle does not change much, but near the downwind side, it becomes larger as the width increases. The frontal area fraction is in a better correlation with the size of the recirculation zone than the building aspect ratios, suggesting that the frontal area fraction is a good indicator for explaining the variation in the size of the recirculation zone with the building aspect ratios.
A neural network is utilized for preprocessing of de-noizing in electrocardiogram signals, retinal images, seismic waves, etc. However, the de-noizing process could provoke increase of computational time and distortion of the original signals. In this study, we investigated a neural network architecture to analyze measurement data without additional de-noizing process. From the dynamical behaviors of DNA in aqueous solution, our neural network model aimed to predict the mole fraction of each DNA in the solution. By adding white noise to the dynamics data of DNA artificially, we investigated the effect of the noise to neural network's predictions. As a result, our model was able to predict the DNA mole fraction with an error of O(0.01) when signal-to-noise ratio was O(1). This work can be applied as a efficient artificial intelligence methodology for analyzing DNA related to genetic disease or cancer cells which would be sensitive to background measuring noise.

A preliminary thermodynamic design model of two-evaporator refrigerator/freezer system is constructed. This system is based on Lorentz-Meutzner cycle using refrigerant mixtures. This model screens alternative refrigerant (R32, R125, R143a, R22, R134a, R152a, R124, R142b, R123) mixtures to select the best performance-giving refrigerant mixtures and its composition for the system. Also, it estimates the effects of cooling temperatures of intercoolers, evaporator's area ratio, cooling load ratio on the performance of the system. The COP of the system ranges from 1.4 to 1.6, which is superior to that of the single evaporator system charged with R12 by 13% to 29%. Among 15 mixtures, R22/R123, R143a/R123, R32/R142b, and R32/R124 (in the order of high COP) are most recommendable. For the case of R22/R123, R22 mass fraction more than 0.5(Load Ratio=1.0) or 0.7(Load Ratio=0.33) is recomended in order to replace R12 without reduction in volumetric capacity when keeping the compressor as the same one. COP has the highest value with X(R22)=0.7 and 0.8, respectively. For the case of R143a/R123, in the similar manner, mass fraction of R143a is more than 0.5 or 0.6 while best performance occurs at X(R143a)=0.8. Higher temperature intercooler is more important for the performance of the system than lower temperature intercooler. The area ratio of evaporators is roughly proportional to load ratio of the evaporators.
The aim of this study is to find out the condition that generates maximum $H_2$ through the calculation of equilibrium model with conditions of pyrolysis gases of Refuse Plastic Fuel(RPF). This study deals with the computational simulation of a RPF gasification using an equilibrium model based on minimization of the Gibbs free energy. An equilibrium analysis was carried out to determine species composition of Syngas in RPF gasification and reactions to variation of temperature, $O_2$/Fuel ratio and Steam/Fuel ratio. Calculated results showed that $O_2$/Fuel ratio, Steam/Fuel ratio and temperature affected on mole fraction of $H_2$, CO.

Thermo-mechanical behaviors of polymer matrix composite(PMC) with continuous TiNi fiber are studied using theoretical analysis with 1-D analytical model and numerical analysis with 2-D multi-fiber finite element(FE) model. It is found that both compressive stress in matrix and tensile stress in TiNi fiber are the source of strengthening mechanisms and thermo-mechanical coupling. Thermal expansion of continuous TiNi fiber reinforced PMC has been compared with various mechanical behaviors as a function of fiber volume fraction, degree of pre-strain and modulus ratio between TiNi fiber and polymer matrix. Based on the concept of so-called shape memory composite(SMC) with a permanent shape memory effect, the critical modulus ratio is determined to obtain a smart composite with no or minimum thermal deformation. The critical modulus ratio should be a major factor for design and manufacturing of SMC.
The mean-line method using empirical models is the most practical method of predicting off-design performance. To gain insight into the empirical models, the influence of empirical models on the performance prediction results is investigated. We found that, in the two-zone model, the secondary flow mass fraction has a considerable effect at high mass flow-rates on the performance prediction curves. In the TEIS model, the first element changes the slope of the performance curves as well as the stable operating range. The second element makes the performance curves move up and down as it increases or decreases. It is also discovered that the slip factor affects pressure ratio, but it has little effect on efficiency. Finally, this study reveals that the skin friction coefficient has significant effect on both the pressure ratio curve and the efficiency curve. These results show the limitations of the present empirical models, and more resonable empirical models are reeded.

This study investigates the influence of hooked-end steel fiber volume fraction and aspect ratio on the mechanical properties, such as compressive and flexural performance, of concrete with specified compressive strength of 30MPa. Three types of hooked-end steel fibers with aspect ratios of 64, 67 and 80 were selected. The flexural tests of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) prismatic specimens were conducted according to EN 14651. The compressive performance of SFRC with different volume fractions (0.25, 0.50 and 0.75%) were evaluated through standard compressive strength test method (KS F 2405). Experimental results indicated that the flexural strength, flexural toughness, fracture energy of concrete were improved as steel fiber volume fraction increases but there is no unique relationship between steel fiber volume fraction and compressive performance. The flexural and compressive properties of concrete incorporating hooked-end steel fiber with aspect ratio of 64 and 80 are a little better than those of SFRC with aspect ratio of 67. For each SFRC mixture used in the study, the residual flexural tensile strength ratio defined in Model Code 2010 was more than the limit value to be able to substitute rebar or welded mesh in structural members with the fiber reinforcement.
