  • The determination of surface morphology is believed to be extremely important in the areas of contact mechanics, adhesion and friction. In order to describe morphology of various rubbed surface, the wear test was carried out under different experimental conditions in lubricating wear. And fractal descriptors was applied to rubbed surface of hydraulic driving material with image processing system. These descriptors to analyze surface structure are fractal dimension. Surface fractal dimension can be determined by sum of intensity difference of surface pixel. Morphology of rubbed surface can be effectively obtained by fractal dimensions.

  • In this study, GIS method has been used to get fractal characteristics. Using the projected area and surface area, 2 dimensional fractal characteristic of terrain was found out. Correlation of fractal dimension and mean slope were also checked over. Results are as below. 1) To get a fractal dimension, the method which is using the surface area is also directly proportional to complexity of the terrain as other fractal dimension. 2) Fractal dimensions using the surface area, that is proposed in this thesis are carried out as below : Uiseong : $2.02{\sim}2.15$ Yeongcheon : $2.10{\sim}2.24$. These values are in a range of fractal $2.10{\sim}2.20$ dimensions which has known. 3) Correlation of mean slope and fractal dimension is diminished about 30% in a region which is more than $25^{\circ}$ of mean slope. So, in this region using the fractal dimension method is better than using the mean slope. From this study, on formula using the projected area and surface area is still good to get a fractal dimension that has been found. But to confirm this method the region of research should be wider and be set up the correlation of mean slope, surface area and fractal dimension. It can be applicable to restoration of terrain and traffic flow analysis in the future research.

  • In this paper, to reduce misrecognized characters, we propose the new method that extract features from character to apply to the character recognition using features from character to apply to the character recognition using fractal dimensions and attractors. Firstly, to reduce the load of recognizer we classify the characters. For the classified character, we extract the features for Box-counting dimensions. Natural Measures, Information dimensions then recognize characters. With histogram, we generate attractors and calculate dimensions from attractors. Then we recognize characters with dimensions of characters and attractors. An experimental result that the overall recognition rates for the training data and testing data are 96.03% and 91.74% respectively. This result shows the effectiveness of proposed method.

  • Since the 20th century, there has been a growing interest in the new concept of fractals, a combination of mathematics and art, and the attempt to study the creative spatial aspects of the concept is being made. The purpose of this research is to examine artistic characteristics of fractal dimension and then analyze the types of fractal dimensions expressed in the fashion. Previous literature on fractals and dimension, and visual data on art and fashion collected over the Internet were used for analysis. Fractal dimension refers to the spatial concept of structural dimension of geometrical self-similarity. An analysis of the types of fractals seen in fashion revealed spatial expansion, the repetition in continual figures, superposition accordant to different sizes, and shades of different shapes. The aesthetic characteristics of fractal dimension appearing in fashions were examined based on analyses of fractal dimension types; the inherent characteristics of self-similarity, superimposition, and atypicality were found. Results obtained from this study are expected to be used as basic materials for the application of the design of fractal dimension into various perspectives of fashion.

  • Based on 3-D surface morphology measurements of C.G. irons, the fractal analyses were made on relationship between dry sliding surface morphology and the fractal dimension. It is revealed that the values of fractal dimensions ($D_f$) of sliding surfaces are in the range between 1-2, which are closely related to the surface morphologies. With the increase in depths of grooves or pits, the $D_f$ values increase. At the same time, the increases in densities of the grooves also cause the $D_f$ values to increase. At last, relationship among $D_f$ and friction coefficient as well as wear rate is discussed.

  • Characteristics of tree propagation and fractal dimension in DGEBA/MDA/GN system were investigated. In the GN contents of 0 and 5 phr, tree was not produced. In the GN content of 10 phr, a reversed sigmoidal behaviour was found but in those of 15 and 20 phr, linear behaviors were found. All electrical trees possessed fractal characteristics. Fractal dimensions of epoxy resin system were almost constant with the variation of observation angles. Since dielectric breakdown occurred earlier in the GN content of 20 phr, fractal characteristics of modified epoxy resin system in a particular term couldnt be investigated.

  • The tracking pattern formed on the dielectric surface due to a surface electrical discharge exhibits fractal structure. In order to quantitatively investigate the fractal characteristics of the surface tracking pattern, the dielectric breakdown model has been employed to numerically generate the surface tracking pattern. In dielectric breakdown model, the pattern growth is determined stochastically by a probability function depending on the local electric potential difference. For the computation of the electric potential for all points of the lattice, a two-dimensional discrete Laplace equation is solved by mean of the successive over-relaxation method combined to the Gauss-Seidel method. The box counting method has been used to calculate the fractal dimensions of the simulated patterns with various exponent $\eta$ and breakdown voltage $\phi_b$. As a result of the simulation, it is found that the fractal nature of the surface tracking pattern depends strongly on $\eta$ and $\phi_b$.

  • The surface roughness of Al, Ag and Ni nano-powders which were prepared by pulsed wire evaporation method was quantified based upon the fractal theory. The surface fractal dimensions of metal nano-powders were determined from the linear relationship between In $V/V_{mono}$ and Inln ($P^o/P$) using multi-layer gas adsorption theory. Moreover, the fractal surface image was realized by computer simulation. The relationship between preparation condition and surface characteristics of metal nano-powders was discussed in detail.
