  • This paper proposes an emotion classifier from EEG signals based on Bayes' theorem and a machine learning using a perceptron convergence algorithm. The emotions are represented on the valence and arousal dimensions. The fast Fourier transform spectrum analysis is used to extract features from the EEG signals. To verify the proposed method, we use an open database for emotion analysis using physiological signal (DEAP) and compare it with C-SVC which is one of the support vector machines. An emotion is defined as two-level class and three-level class in both valence and arousal dimensions. For the two-level class case, the accuracy of the valence and arousal estimation is 67% and 66%, respectively. For the three-level class case, the accuracy is 53% and 51%, respectively. Compared with the best case of the C-SVC, the proposed classifier gave 4% and 8% more accurate estimations of valence and arousal for the two-level class. In estimation of three-level class, the proposed method showed a similar performance to the best case of the C-SVC.

  • In this study, a zero-crossing spike current issue in a totem-pole bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) converter is comprehensively investigated for the first time. Spike current occurs when input voltage crosses zero, becomes a noise source, and causes severe common mode emission issues. A generation mechanism for electromagnetic interference (EMI) is presented to investigate the EMI problem caused by zero-crossing issue, and a noise spectrum due to this issue is predicted by a theoretical analysis based on the Fourier coefficient of an approximate spike current waveform. Furthermore, a noise reduction method is proposed and then improved to reduce the spike current. Experimental measurements are implemented on a GaN-based totem-pole bridgeless PFC converter, and the spike current can be effectively suppressed through the proposed method. Furthermore, the noise spectrums measured without and with the reduced zero-crossing spike current are compared. Experimental results validate the analysis of the noise spectrum caused by the zero-crossing spike current issue.

  • We propose an efficient method for synthesizing mesh-based realistic computer-generated hologram (CGH). In a previous nonanalytic mesh-based CGH synthesis, the angular spectrum of the two-dimensional (2D) plane is calculated using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) with the same size as the resolution of the final hologram. Because FFT increases the computation time as the size of the input matrix increases, the previous method has a problem: The higher the resolution of the hologram, the greater the computational load, thereby delaying synthesis time. In this study, when calculating the angular spectrum of the 2D plane in mesh-based CGH synthesis, we propose a method to calculate the angular spectrum by defining the 2D plane with an arbitrary size smaller than the resolution of the final hologram. The resolution adjustment method reduces the computation time and can be applied to occlusion culling and texturing for the realistic effect of mesh-based CGH. We describe the principle, error analysis, application of realistic effect, and experimental results of the proposed method.

  • Since radar wind profiler (RWP) provides wind field data with high time and space resolution in all weather conditions, their verification of the accuracy and quality is essential. The simultaneous wind measurement from rawinsonde is commonly used to evaluate wind vectors from RWP. In this study, the simulation algorithm which produces the spectrum and raw time series (I/Q) data from the average values of moments is presented as a step-by-step verification method for the signal processing algorithm. The possibility of the simulation algorithm was also confirmed through comparison with the raw data of LAP-3000. The Doppler power spectrum was generated by assuming the density function of the skew-normal distribution and by using the moment values as the parameter. The simulated spectrum was generated through random numbers. In addition, the coherent averaged I/Q data was generated by random phase and inverse discrete Fourier transform, and raw I/Q data was generated through the Dirichlet distribution.

  • Palpation of the pulse has been used in Korean traditional medicine since ancient times to assess physical health. Pulse wave contour may be obtained by measuring arterial pressure or blood volume change of skin. The latter is called as Photoplethysmography(PPG) or digital volume pulse(DVP). The PPG signal is measured by a device comprising an infrared light sourece and a photodetector. Although less widely used, this technique deserves further consideration because of its simplicity and ease of use. The contour of the PPG is formed as a result of a complex interaction between the left ventricle and the systemic circulation. It usually exhibits an early systolic peak and an early diastolic peak. the first peak is formed mainly by pressure trasmitted along a direct path from the left ventricle to the finger. The second peak is formed in part by pressure transmitted along the aorta and large arteries to sites of impedance mismatch in the lower body. The contour of the PPG is sensitive to changes in arterial tone and is influenced by ageing and large artery stiffness. Measurements taken directly from the PPG or from its second derivative can be used to assess these properties. In some mathematical approaches, the extraction of periodic components using frequency analysis was tried to analysis of the PPG. But we don't understand yet what kind of factor in the cardiovascular system or human body is related with the respective specific Fourier components of PPG. This review describes the background to measurement principles, representative contour, contour analysis and frequency domain analysis of PPG, and current and future.

  • Apoptosis is the normal physiological process of cell death essential for the maintenance of homeostasis. The function of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and adenine diphosphate (ADP) ribosylation (transfer of ADP-ribose to proteins) reactions in modifying apoptosis have recently been of great interest. Recently. CD38. a type 2 transmembrane glycoprotein expressed in hematopoietic and non hematopoietic cell lines. has been reported to possess NAD glycohydrolase activity (Han. 1999) and PC-1 and CD38 NADase regulates T cells by inhibition of phosphodiesterase/pyrophosphatase activity of PC-1 by its association with glycosaminoglycan (Hozada et al., 1999). Sindhuphak et al. (2000) has reported that cervical cancer cells can be differentiated from normal cells by using FTIR (Fourier-Transformed Infrared) technique. which has characterized shifts to be due to the phosphodiester bond in nucleic acid. protein amide I&II. carbohydrate and glycogen bands. Mechanisms how phosphodiester bond shift in cervical cancer cells as compared to control cells remain to be elucidated. Suramana et al. (2000) as well as Lohitnavy and Sinhaseni (1998) have studied methomyl and colchicine effects in rat splenocytes. Lactate Dehydroge-nase Isozymes 3 (LDH3) and LDH4 were observed to increase transiently and subsided in plasma of rats exposed to 6~8 mg/kg methomyl after 48 hours. Phosphodiester bond shift of nucleic acid. detected by FTIR. was also reported (Suramana et al., 2000). We report here, after analysis of bond shift patterns. a similar bond shifts detected by FTIR spectrum observed in human cervical cells and splenocytes of rats exposed orally to 2~8 mg/kg methomyl as well as rats exposed to colchicine 2~6 mg/kg orally.

  • Purpose: Electroretinogram(ERG) signal noise as well as conducting other bio-signal measurement were generated. It was intened to enhance the accuracy of retinal-related diagnosis with removing signal noise. Methods: Sampling signal was made with generating 60 Hz noise and white noise. The noise were removed using wavelet transforms and bandpass filter. De-noising frequency was compared with Fourier transform spectrum. Removed noises were compared numerically using SNR(signal to noise ratio). Results: The result compared Fourier transform spectrum was showed that 60 Hz noise removed completely and most of white noise was removed by wavelet transforms. 60 Hz and the white noise remained using bandpass filters. The result compared SNR showed that wavelet transforms was 22.8638 and bandpass filter was 4.0961. Conclusions: Wavelet transform showed less signal distortion in removing noise. ERG signal is expected to improve the accuracy of retinal-related diagnosis.

  • Monitoring technology of machining has a long history since unmanned machining was introduced. Despite the long history, many researchers have presented new approaches continuously in this area. Sound based machine fault diagnosis is the process consisting of detecting automatically the damages that affect the machines by analyzing the sounds they produce during their operating time. The collected sound is corrupted by the surrounding work environment. Therefore, the most important part of the diagnosis is to find hidden elements inside the data that can represent the error pattern. This paper presents a feature extraction methodology that combines various digital signal processing and pattern recognition methods for the analysis of the sounds produced by tools. The magnitude spectrum of the sound is extracted using the Fourier analysis and the band-pass filter is applied to further characterize the data. Statistical functions are also used as input to the nonlinear classifier for the final response. The results prove that the proposed feature extraction method accurately captures the hidden patterns of the sound generated by the tool, unlike the conventional features. Therefore, it is shown that the proposed method can be applied to a sound based automatic diagnosis system.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of 12-week elastic resistance exercise for the elderly on the magnitude of frequency and variability of ground reaction force signals. To this aim, total 12 elderly women aged in their 70 were participated in this study and asked to do a 12-week elastic resistance exercise program. FFT(fast Fourier Transform) was used to analyze the frequency domain analysis of the ground reaction forces's signals and an accumulative PSD (power spectrum density) normalized by support phase of walking was calculated to reconstruct the certain signals. To estimate the gait stability between the before and after exercise, values of variability were determined in a coefficient of variance. The magnitude of frequency and variability analysis for media-lateral signal revealed significantly less after exercise (p<.05). In contrast, variability of this signal's frequency that have used to evaluate the local stability during walking exhibited significantly greater after exercise(p<.05). In summary, magnitude frequency and variability of media-lateral ground reaction force's signal were significantly changed after a 12-week elastic resistance exercise.
