With the discovery in plants of the proteinaceous forisome crystalloid (Knoblauch, et al. 2003), a novel, non-living, ATP-independent biological material became available to the designer of smart materials for advanced actuating and sensing. The in vitro studies of Knoblauch, et al. show that forisomes (2-4 micron wide and 10-40 micron long) can be repeatedly stimulated to contract and expand anisotropically by shifting either the ambient pH or the ambient calcium ion concentration. Because of their unique abilities to develop and reverse strains greater than 20% in time periods less than one second, forisomes have the potential to outperform current smart materials as advanced, biomimetic, multi-functional, smart sensors or actuators. Probing forisome material properties is an immediate need to lay the foundation for synthesizing forisomebased smart materials for health monitoring of structural integrity in civil infrastructure and for aerospace hardware. Microfluidics is a growing, vibrant technology with increasingly diverse applications. Here, we use microfluidics to study the surface interaction between forisome and substrate and the conformational dynamics of forisomes within a confined geometry to lay the foundation for forisome-based smart materials synthesis in controlled and repeatable environment.

This paper presents the structural identification of an arch dam model for the damaged, repaired and strengthened conditions under different water levels. For this aim, an arch dam-reservoir-foundation model has been constructed. Ambient vibration tests have been performed on the damaged, repaired and strengthened dam models for the empty reservoir (0 cm), 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, 40 cm, 50 cm and full reservoir (60 cm) water levels to illustrate the effects of water levels on the dynamics characteristics. Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition Method in the frequency domain has been used to extract the dynamic characteristics. The dynamic characteristics obtained from the damaged, repaired and strengthened dam models show that the natural frequencies and damping ratios are considerably affected from the varying water level. The maximum differences between the frequencies for the empty and full reservoir are obtained as 16%, 33%, and 25% for damaged, repaired and strengthened model respectively. Mode shapes obtained from the all models are not affected by the increasing water level. Also, after the repairing and strengthening implementations, the natural frequencies of the arch dam model increase significantly. After strengthening, between 46-92% and 43-62% recovery in the frequencies are calculated for empty and full reservoir respectively. Apparently, after strengthening implementation, the mode shapes obtained are more acceptable and distinctive compared to those for the damaged model.

The global performance of a 15 MW floating offshore wind turbine, a newly designed semisubmersible floating foundation with multiple heave plates by CNOOC, is investigated with two independent turbine-floater-mooring coupled dynamic analysis programs CHARM3D-FAST and OrcaFlex. The semisubmersible platform hosts IEA 15 MW reference wind turbine modulated for VolturnUS-S and hybrid type (chain-wire-chain with clumps) 3×2 mooring lines targeting the water depth of 100 m. The numerical free-decay simulation results are compared with physical experiments with 1:64 scaled model in 3D wave basin, from which appropriate drag coefficients for heave plates were estimated. The tuned numerical simulation tools were then used for the feasibility and global performance analysis of the FOWT considering the 50-yr-storm condition and maximum operational condition. The effect of tower flexibility was investigated by comparing tower-base fore-aft bending moment and nacelle translational accelerations. It is found that the tower-base bending moment and nacelle accelerations can be appreciably increased due to the tower flexibility.

Analysis of multi-physics systems and the visualization of simulation data are crucial and difficult in computational science and engineering. In Korea, Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information KISTI developed EDISON, a web-based computational science simulation platform, and it is now the ninth year since the service started. Hitherto, the EDISON platform has focused on providing a robust simulation environment and various computational science analysis tools. However, owing to the increasing issues in collaborative research, data format standardization has become more important. In addition, as the visualization of simulation data becomes more important for users to understand, the necessity of analyzing input / output data information for each software is increased. Therefore, it is necessary to organize the data format and metadata for the representative software provided by EDISON. In this paper, we analyzed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) simulation software in the field of mechanical engineering where several physical phenomena (fluids, solids, etc.) are complex. Additionally, in order to visualize various simulation result data, we used existing web visualization tools developed by third parties. In conclusion, based on the analysis of these data formats, it is possible to provide a foundation of multi-physics and a web-based visualization environment, which will enable users to focus on simulation more conveniently.
The present research aims to develop the aluminum disc brake replacing the existing cast iron disc brake. Material such as aluminum using FEM numerical analysis in order to improve the characteristics of each element, we analyze the performance characteristics and braking time you try to change. We try to lay the foundation for the development of an aluminum disc by investigating performance characteristics of the existing cast iron disc brake and comparing them with those of the aluminum disc. This involves FEM dynamics analysis for disc materials and experimental tests using the brake dynamometer. From this study, the results of 7075 aluminum braking performance can be seen that the best.
To investigate the effects of "sudden change" of wind fluctuations on vehicle running performance, which is caused by the artificial discrete simulation of wind field, a three-dimensional vehicle model is set up with multi-body dynamics theory and the vehicle dynamic responses in crosswind conditions are obtained in time domain. Based on Hilbert Huang Transform, the effects of simulation separations on time-frequency characteristics of wind field are discussed. In addition, the probability density distribution of "sudden change" of wind fluctuations is displayed, addressing the effects of simulation separation, mean wind speed and vehicle speed on the "sudden change" of wind fluctuations. The "sudden change" of vehicle dynamic responses, which is due to the discontinuity of wind fluctuations on moving vehicle, is also analyzed. With Principal Component Analysis, the comprehensive evaluation of vehicle running performance in crosswind conditions at different simulation separations of wind field is investigated. The results demonstrate that the artificial discrete simulation of wind field often causes "sudden change" in the wind fluctuations and the corresponding vehicle dynamic responses are noticeably affected. It provides a theoretical foundation for the choice of a suitable simulation separation of wind field in engineering application.
Mobilecomputer offers more fundamental role than role assistance enemy of modern technology equipment and new Information Technology can reconsider, and reconstruct creatively accuracy of physiological concept. Recently, it becomes a very important issue to consider the mechanical systems such as high-speed vehicle and railway train moving on a flexible beam structure. Using general approach proposed in the first part of this paper, it tis possible to predict planar motion of constrained mechanical system and elastic structure with various kinds of foundation supporting condition. Combined differential-algebraic equations of motion derived from both multibody dynamics theory and Finite Element Method can be analyzed numerically using generalized coordinate partitioning algorithm. To verify the validity of this approach, results from simply supported elastic beam subjected to a moving load are compared with exact solution from a reference. Finally, parameter study is conducted for a moving vehicle model on a simply supported 3-span bridge.
In recent years, it becomes a very important issue to consider the mechanical systems such as high-speed vehicles and railway trains moving on elastic beam structures. In this paper, a general approach, which can predict the dynamic behavior of constrained mechanical system and elastic beam structure, is proposed. Also, various supporting conditions of a foundation support are considered for the elastic beam structures. The elastic structure is assumed to be a nonuniform and linear Bernoulli-Euler beam with proportional damping effect. Combined Differential-Algebraic Equations of motion are derived using multibody dynamics theory and Finite Element Method. The proposed equations of motion can be solved numerically using generalizd coordinate partitioning method and Predictor-Corrector algorithm, which is an implicit multi-step integration method.
