This paper presents a new structural system to use as retaining walls. In civil works, there is a general trend to use traditional reinforced concrete (RC) retaining walls to resist soil pressure. Despite their good resistance, RC retaining walls have some disadvantages such as need for huge temporary formworks, high dense reinforcing, low construction speed, etc. In the present work, a composite wall with only one steel plate (steel-concrete) is proposed to address the disadvantages of the RC walls. In the proposed system, steel plate is utilized not only as tensile reinforcement but also as a permanent formwork for the concrete. In order to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed SC composite system, an experimental program that includes nine SC composite wall specimens is developed. In this experimental study, the effects of different parameters such as distance between shear connectors, length of shear connectors, concrete ultimate strength, use of compressive steel plate and compressive steel reinforcement are investigated. In addition, a 3D finite element (FE) model for SC composite walls is proposed using the finite element program ABAQUS and load-displacement curves from FE analyses were compared against results obtained from physical testing. In all cases, the proposed FE model is reasonably accurate to predict the behavior of SC composite walls under out-of-plane loads. Results from experimental work and numerical study show that the SC composite wall system has high strength and ductile behavior under flexural loads. Furthermore, the design equations based on ACI code for calculating out-ofplate flexural and shear strength of SC composite walls are presented and compared to experimental database.

A steel wire-integrated deck plate that welds integrated triangle truss steel wires on a galvanized steel sheet is developed to reduce construction costs of a slab or formwork such as shores and supports, and it is already widely applied in many construction fields. This study selected upper and lower steel wires, lattice steel wires, span, and cutting methods of ends as variables, and conducted an experimental test by manufacturing a total of 32 full scale test bodies. According to the result, changes in final destruction types of the test bodies and cutting methods of ends didn't affect structural performance of test bodies, and for a 3.2m-span test body, there was no big problems in using ${\Phi}4.5$ of lattice steel wires.

This paper describes the application of discretized continuum-type optimality criteria(DCOC) and the development of optimum design program for the reinforced concrete continuous beams with rectangular cross-section. The cost of construction as objective function which includes the costs of concrete, reinforcing steel and formwork is minimized. The design constraints include limits on the maximum deflection, flexural and shear strengths, in addition to ductility requirements, and upper and lower bounds on design variables as stipulated by the design Code. Based on Kuhn-Tucker necessary conditions, the optimality criteria are explicitly derived in terms of the design variables-effective depth, and steel ratio. The self-weight of the beam is included in the equilibrium equation of the real system. An iterative procedure and computer program for updating the design variables are developed. Two numerical examples of reinforced concrete continuous beams are presented to show the applicability and efficiency of the DCOC-based technique.
This paper describes the application of discretized continuum-type optimality criteria (DCOC) and the development of optimum design program for the multispan partially prestressed concrete beams. The cost of construction as objective function which includes the costs of concrete, prestressing steel, non-prestressing steel and formwork is minimized. The design constraints include limits on the maximum deflection, flexural and shear strengths, in addition to ductility requirements, and upper and lower bounds on design variables as stipulated by the design Code. Based on Kuhn-Tucker necessary conditions, the optimality criteria are explicitly derived in terms of the design variables-effective depth, eccentricity of prestressing steel and non-prestressing steel ratio. The prestressing profile is prescribed by parabolic functions. The self-weight of the structure is included in the equilibrium equation of the real system, as is the secondary effect resulting from the prestressing force. An iterative procedure and computer program for updating the design variables are developed. Two numerical examples of multispan PPC beams with rectangular cross-section are solved to show the applicability and efficiency of the DCOC-based technique.
Accelerators are used to speed up the construction by accelerating the setting time which helps in early removal of formwork thus leading to faster construction rate. Admixtures are used in mortar and concrete during or after mixing to improve certain properties of material which cannot be achieved in conventional cement mortar and concrete. The various industrial by products make nuisance and are hazardous to ecosystem as well. These wastes can be used in the construction industries to reduce the consumption of cement/aggregates, cost; and save the energy and environment by utilising waste and eliminate their disposal problem as well. The effect of calcium nitrate and triethanolamine (TEA) as accelerators and marble powder (MP) as waste material on the various properties of cement paste and mortar has been studied in the present work. The replacement ratio of MP was 0-10% @ 2.5% by weight of cement. The addition of calcium nitrate was 0% and 1%; and variation of addition of TEA was 0-0.1@ 0.025% and 0.1-1.0@ 0.1% by weight of cement. On the basis of setting time, some mix proportions were selected and further investigated. Setting time and soundness of cement paste; compressive strength and microstructure of mortar mix of selected mix proportions were studied experimentally at 3, 7 and 28 days aging. Results showed that use of MP, calcium nitrate, TEA and their combination reduced setting time of cement paste for all the mixes. Addition of calcium nitrate increased the compressive strength at all curing ages while MP and TEA decreased the compressive strength. The mechanism of additives was discussed through scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis of the specimens.
Real-time monitoring of stiffness and strength in cement based system has received significant attention in past few decades owing to the development of advanced techniques. Also, use of environment friendly supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) in cement, though gaining huge interest, severely affect the strength gain especially in early ages. Continuous monitoring of strength- and stiffness- gain using an efficient technique will systematically facilitate to choose the suitable time of removal of formwork for structures made with SCM incorporated concrete. This paper presents a technique for monitoring the strength and stiffness evolution in hydrating fly ash blended cement systems using electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) based technique. It is important to observe that the slower pozzolanic reactivity of fly ash blended cement systems could be effectively tracked using the evolution of equivalent local stiffness of the hydrating medium. Strength prediction models are proposed for estimating the strength and stiffness of the fly ash cement system, where curing age (in terms of hours/days) and the percentage replacement of cement by fly ash are the parameters. Evaluation of strength as obtained from EMI characteristics is validated with the results from destructive compression test and also compared with the same obtained from commonly used ultrasonic wave velocity (UPV). Statistical error indices indicate that the EMI technique is capable of predicting the strength of fly ash blended cement system more accurate than that from UPV. Further, the correlations between stiffness- and strength- gain over the time of hydration are also established. From the study, it is found that EMI based method can be effectively used for monitoring of strength gain in the fly ash incorporated cement system during hardening.

Concrete placement work is executed using temporary structures such as formwork, support, etc. The temporary structures could collapse when they are not properly supported, and need to be monitored for structural safety. This paper introduces a USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network)-based monitoring system that are being tested at the Pusan National University for increasing structural safety. The system takes advantage of ubiquitous technologies together with a variety of sensors, which allows for wireless transmission of construction monitoring data. The temporary structures are constantly monitored to find out whether the structures are being supported in a stable condition. A field test is being conducted to acquire data, and use them for evaluating the safety condition of the construction operation.

LB-Deck is one of the widely used member in interior part of girders as a permanent formwork in structures, but it is not easy to apply to the exterior part of girder due to the overturning and excessive deflection. Considering allowable deflection and safety of the exterior part, Precast Concrete Cantilever Deck (PCC-Deck) is proposed with normal LB-Deck in inner part and extended bars of LB-Deck in outer part. Both numerical analyses and experimental tests were compared to check the safety and allowable deflection for 6 types of PCC-Deck, and D-type (with 16 mm top bar, 6 mm lattice bar, 12 mm bottom bar) is suggested as an optimal structural reinforcement to the 28 kN of maximum load and 27.49 mm of final deflection. The load resisting ratio of D-type under working load of 10 kN was about 2.8 times and 77.5% of improvement was observed.
To proactively respond to internal and external changes such as the recent demographic change and rising demand for diversified housing types, this study investigated the framed-structure free plan public house model proposed by the LH to look at the seismic performance of framed-structure apartment according to damper system use through non-linear analysis. The effectiveness thereof was also examined in terms of performance and economy. As a result, the proposed damper system application method to framed-structure free plan public house model was found to meet the performance requirements of the present earthquake-resistant design (KBC2016) and effective to apply to designs. The max response displacement and max response acceleration were compared based on the nonlinear analysis. As a result, the building with damper system showed better earthquake resistance performance than earthquake-resistant structure thanks to the damper system, although the base shear of earthquake-resistant system was reduced by 20% in design. The damper system is expected to help reduce building damage while ensuring excellent earthquake resistance performance. In addition, the framework quantities of earthquake-resistant structure and structure with damping system were compared. As a result, columns were found to reduce concrete amount by about 3.9% and rebar, by about 7.3%. Walls showed about 12.6% reduction in concrete and about 10.7% in rebar. In terms of cost, framework construction cost including formwork and foundation expenses was expected to drop by about 5~6%.
The Half-depth precast deck is a structural system that utilizes pre-cast panels pre-built at the factory as formwork at the construction stage and as a major structural member at the same time after completion. These systems have joints between segments, and the detail and performance of the joints are factors that have a very large impact on the quality, such as the constructability and durability of the bridge decks. In this study, strength performance evaluation was performed for improved joints using connecting rebar by experimental method. Static loading tests were conducted on the test specimen with improved joint, those with existing joint and those without joint. The test results of the specimens were compared to each other, and the flexural strength required by the design was compared. The flexural strength required in the design was presented by finite element analysis. It has been shown that the flexural strength of the specimens with joints were more than twice that required by the design. But the flexural strength of the specimen with existing joint was about 84% of that without joint. The flexural strength of the specimen with improved joints was a nearly similar degree of that compared to the specimen without joint. And a comparison of the moment-deflection relationship curves of the two specimens also shows a very similar flexural behavior. It is confirmed that improved joint has sufficient flexural strength. In addition to strength, the bridge decks require serviceability, such as deflection and cracking, and in particular, fatigue resistance due to repetitive live loads is an important performance factor. Therefore, further verification studies are required.
