  • A 2-dimensional FEM/GEM program was developed for analyzing forming processes of an arbitrarily shaped draw-die, in which plane strain condition is assumed and linear line elements are employed. FEM formulation adopted a new algorithm for solving force equilibrium as well as non-penetration condition simultaneously. For the case of numerical divergence at nearly final forming stages and the initial guess in Newton-Raphson iterations, geometric force equilibrium method(GEM) is also introduced. The developed program was tested with the simulation of stamping processes of automotive bonnet inner pannel in order to verify the usefulness and validity of FEM/GEM formulation.

  • Sheet metal forming process is a non-linearity problem which Is affected by various process variables, such as geometric shape of punch and die, frictional characteristic, etc.. Therefore, the knowledge of the influence of the process variables is needed in the design of sheet metal working processes. In this paper, deep drawing tests for blank holding force, punch speed and lubrication between sheet material and tool were carried out to investigate the influence upon sheet formability. Experimental results were discussed about the defects on the deformation behaviors during the forming process.

  • The drawability of AZ31B magnesium sheet is estimated at various temperatures (200, 250, 300, 350 and $400^{\circ}C$), and forming speed (20, 50, 100 mm/min), thickness (0.5, 0.8, 1.0, 1.4 mm). The deep drawing process of circular cup and square cup were used in forming experiments. Experimental and FEM analysis are performed to investigate drawability and affection of controlled blank holding force. Through the controlled blank holding force, drawability was improved. This result is verified by FEM analysis. Through the observation of microstructure, the main cause is investigated as a quantity of the dynamic recrystallization.

  • The drawbead is one of the most important factors in sheet metal forming for automotive parts. So clarifying the friction characteristics between sheets and drawbead is essential to improve the formability of sheet metal. Therefore in this study, drawbead friction test was performed at circular shape bead and rectangular shape bead. The results show that the tendency of drawing force for rectangular bead is nearly similar with circular bead and the drawing force is nearly proportional to friction coefficient.

  • Two uppor bound solutions, by the force balance method and by a kinematically admissible velocity field, are compared for the metal forming problems in plane strain. It is concluded that these two approaches always give identical results when the geometrical configurations of the deformation model reman the same. By detailed derivations for plastic bending of a notched bar, closed die forging, compression of a rectangular block, machining with a restricted contact tool and plane strain backward extrusion, the identity of both approaches is verified.

  • This study suggests the practical method which can reduce the lead time of the field trial and design of the dies. The virtual manufacturing, with which the die design is evaluated by computer analysis, reveals the impropriety of a design before die makings. Three methods for reducing the die making process occupying over 60% of the automotive development are like follows: First, the crack and wrinkle occurrence can be prevented by virtually adjusting the blank holding force and drawbead force with a computer simulation. Second, the parts which can not remove the forming defects in spite of the adjustment of forming parameters need to modify the part geometry or punch temporary shape. Third, the simulation before field trial, and field trial simulation can be effectively used in die design.

  • In order to show the efficiency and accuracy of an expert drawbead model, finite element simulations of auto-body panel stampings are carried out. For numerical modeling of the drawbead of a panel die, the drawbead restraining force and bead-exit thinning calculated by the expert model are imposed to a node nearest to the drawbead position as a boundary condition, Finite element simulations show that the expert model provides the accurate solution, guarantees the stable convergence, and has the merit in the computation time.

  • Since Mg alloy has many attractive advantages among the practically used metals, many researchers have been studied to develop useful process and material. The crystal structure of Magnesium was hexagonal close-packed, so its formability was poor at room temperature. But formability was improved in high temperature with increasing of slip planes, twins, dynamic recrystallization. In this study The formability of AZ31B magnesium sheet is estimated according to the variable temperatures, forming speed, thickness, blank holding force. The results of deep drawing experiences show that the formability is well at the range from 200 to $250^{\circ}C$, 20 to 60 mm/min forming speed and 2.5 to 3KN blank holding force.

  • This paper compare the Townsend theory with the Molten metal bridge theory of Holm for the arc discharge at opening contacts. And we measured the arc voltage at opening contacts of the 3 types arc extinction unit used in DC magnetic contactor. So, we sure that the molten metal bridge contributes to form the arc. By the experiment of the 3 types arc extinction unit, we know that the magnetic force acting on the arc doesn't effect forming arc but contribut the arc extinction.
