  • The concentrations of offensive odorous compounds emitted from the two chemical plants in Chongju and Yeosu industrial complex in Korea were determined by uv/vis spectroscopy, gas chromatography, and high performance liquid chromatography. The odorous compounds examined in this study are ammonia, trimethyl amine, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propion aldehyde, butyl aldehyde, n-valeric aldehyde, iso-valeric aldehyde, hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl disulfide. The concentrations of those were determined from the 10 sampling points of the two plants, respectively. The emission concentrations of all odorous com-pounds examined in the two plants were lower than those of the regulation standard levels of industrial complex in Korea, respectively. The propion aldehyde, n-valeric aldehyde, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl disulfide in Chongju and Yeosu plants, and butyl aldehyde and iso-valeric aldehyde in Yeosu plant were not detected at any sampling points examined.

  • This study was carried out to examine properties of water resistant plywood by using serum protein adhesive which is natural, environment-friendly and human-friendly. For the preparation of the serum protein adhesive, pig blood from slaughterhouse was centrifuged and serum was separated from corpuscles and concentrated to 30% by dry weight basis. This concentrated serum protein was modified with PF resin (50% NVC) with the ratio of 9 : 2.5. Plywood made by this modified serum protein gave 1.21 N/$mm^2$ of dry bonding strength, 0.80 N/$mm^2$ of wet boil bonding strength, 0% of cyclic delamination test value, and 0.025 ppm of HCHO emission, which met the excellent super $E_0$ grade and water resistant plywood.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the reduction effect of bake out on the concentration of indoor air pollutants by measuring the concentration of indoor pollutants(VOCs, HCHO) after the bake out. As a result of the study, bake out was considerably effective in reducing the concentration o( indoor air pollutants, showing relatively high reduction ratio around 40${\sim}$56%. However, continuous attention and control after the bake out is required for the prevention of the rise of the concentration by subsequent emission.

  • Exhaust emissions were studied as a function of gasoline olefin composition in two vehicles-MPI and GDi engine equipped vehicles. Three different gasolines were tested which varied in olefin contents-12, 16 and 20 vol%. Exhaust emissions in two vehicles were affected by changes in gasoline olefin composition. Responses to changes in olefins were similar in both vehicles : reducing olefins lowered emissions of NOx and CO. Measured exhaust emissions included total hydrocarbons (THC), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon monooxide(CO), carbon dioxide($CO_2$), formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, xylene, 1,3-butadiene and acetylene.

  • This study was carried out to improve the physico-mechanical properties of board products by applying the technique of high frequency heating, and find out the optimum conditions of high frequency heating, compared with the technique of hot platen heating. The possibility of isocyanate resin application to board production was also considered to solve the problem of free formaldehyde emission from urea resin which is generally used in wood industry. For this study, 30 mm thick MDP (medium density fiberboard) with isocyanate resin were manufactured by the techniques of hot platen heating, high frequency heating and the combination techniques of both heating methods, and compared in several point of views.

  • Construction company's role is getting bigger recently because of interest of indoor air quality problem. The using environment-friendly building finishing material is the most benefit method to reduce pollutants in house. It is confirmed the actual condition of environment-friendly building finishing material such as wallpapers, wooden flooring boards, glues, paints, adhesives, plaster boards that are used the work of apartment construction in 2006-2007. It shows that environment-friendly materials have excellent grade mostly, general materials have pass I, pass II grade mostly and are high TVOC emission.

  • There has been growing concern regarding IAQ(Indoor Air Quality) recently, and IAQ problems from the air-tightness and use of chemical materials addition to the building materials have become increasingly important factors in the built environment. Ventilation is supposed as the solution of healthy indoor quality, and Korea government requests that all new apartment buildings must have a ventilation system as a matter of duty since January, 2006. The purpose of this study is to investigate the indoor concentration change of VOCs include the Formaldehyde according to many different ventilation supply types. Results showed that the reduction effect of target pollutants by the ventilation system was very slight. The cause of these results was attribute to increase the emission rate of building materials by increasing the ventilation rate.

  • This study was carried out to resplace traditional virgin wood fiber by recycled MDF-waste fiber for the manufacture of high density fiberboard. For the recycling, MDF waste was disintegrated for 10 minutes and beaten for 15 minutes. There was no difference in formaldehyde emission by desiccator method between virgin wood fiber and disintergrated and beaten MDF-waste fiber. Fiberboard which was maded from 100% of disintergrated and beaten MDF-waste fiber showed similar physical and mechanical properties to those of virgin fiber. The yield of recycled fiber from MDF waste was 85%.

  • Indoor air pollution has been significantly aggravated due to hazardous pollutants emitted from petrochemical finishing materials in new apartments. Pollutants emitted into indoor environment have significant effects on the health of occupants, causing undesirable symptoms related to sick building syndrome such as headache, dizziness, difficulty in concentration, etc. Therefore, this paper attempted to investigate the reduction effect of bake out on VOCs emission in new apartments. Experiments were carried out in three households, one of which was naturally ventilated. The naturally ventilated showed the lowest indoor pollutant concentration and also showed the highest reduction rate by the use of bake out. The most desirable result was observed when the household was naturally ventilated after bake out. More detailed experiments are expected to be carried out afterwards on the prediction of reduction rate of each pollutant.

  • This study is to investigate the characteristics of emission concentration according to wallpaper sort and emission time using small chamber method. The target compounds included 45 VOCs and formaldehyde, which were respectively determined by adsorption sampling and thermal desorption coupled with GC/MS method, and by sampling in DNPH cartridge and HPLC method. The emission factor of TVOC and HCHO was detected to $1.1mg/m^2{\cdot}h$ and $0.01mg/m^2{\cdot}h$ respectively, and the wallpapers of 25 satisfied emission standard. TVOC emission factor appeared in order of the concentration of PVC, natural, and Non-PVC wallpaper, while HCHO was detected very low concentration without relation to wallpaper sort. The paraffin hydrocarbons appeared to be the most contributable class of hydrocarbons in terms of their concentrations, followed by aromatics, and olefins, halogenated hydrocarbons was not detected. PVC wallpapers plentifully emitted TVOC above other wallpapers, and toluene was showed higher concentration of 10 times than natural wallpaper. In addition to, emission factor according to elapse was gradually decreased.
