  • We studied the effects of dip treatments of natural extracts (Camellia sinensis, Angelica gigas, Astragalus membranaceus, Glycyrrhiza uralensis: 1% extract) on the quality of peeled 'Daebo' chestnut. After dipping treatment peeled chestnuts were vacuum packaged with $75{\mu}m$ PE+Nylon 7-layer film then stored in $4^{\circ}C$ incubator for 35days. The quality changes including the surface color and off-odor were evaluated for storage days. The natural extracts dipping treatment on peeled chestnut was effective on skin browning inhibition. Especially, Astragalus membranaceus and Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract treatments was significantly effective in reducing surface browning. The color change (${\Delta}E$) of peeled chestnut was the highest (5.6) in control, whereas that was the lowest (3.4) under Astragalus membranaceus extract treatment at 35 storage day. The natural exteacts treatments had no effect on the weight, the mositure loss rate, the firmness and the soluble solid contencts of peeled chestnuts during storage after treatment. The decaying rate of peeled chestnut was 9.0% in control, 9.0% in Camellia sinensis extract treatment, 9.0% in Angelica gigas extract treatment, 21.0% in Astragalus membranaceus extract treatment, and 7.0% Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract treatment at 35 storage day. Sensory evaluation revealed significant differences in off-odor and color attributes. After all, the score of overall sensory evaluation was the lowest in Astragalus membranaceus extract treatment and the highest in Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract treatment. As the results, the natural extract treatments, especially with vacuum packing after Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract treatment, extended the shelf-life of the peeled chestnut by inhibiting the surface browning.

  • In order to guide the project for tree seedling production and direct seeding afforestation by introduction of genus Lespedeza, studies were conducted on the effect of seed storage period and on percentage and rate of germination through various kinds of treatments. L. bicolor, L. cyrtobotrya, and L. japonica. intermedia seed were storeds at different period of time. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Germination capacity was not reduced until 28 months after harvest. However, germination was very poor 40 months after harvest, with less than 30% germination obtained by germination treatments. 2. Removal of seed coat and cone, sulphuric acid treatments were more effective in increasing germination than other treatments. Especially, most seeds germinated one week earlier than other treatments by removal of the seed coat. 3. The seeds stored for a short period of time showed more rapid germination compared to seeds which were stored for long period.

  • Fertilization is essential to seedling production in nursery culture, but excessive fertilization can contaminate surface and ground water around the nursery. The objective of this study was to find optimal fertilization practice of container seedling production for reducing soil and water contamination around the nursery without compromising seedling quality. This study was conducted to investigate chemical properties of the growth medium, growth performance, chlorophyll fluorescence, and chlorophyll contents of larch ($Larix$ $kaempferi$) growing under three different fertilization treatments (Constant rate, Three stage rate, and Exponential rate fertilization). Root collar diameter and height of larch were not significantly different among treatments even though the nutrient supply of the exponential treatment was half that of the constant and three stage treatments. Chemical properties of the growth medium showed the same trends as root collar diameter and height. The total biomass and seedling quality index (SQI) were higher at Constant than at other treatments, but both SQI of Constant and Exponential were not significantly different. Photochemical efficiency and chlorophyll contents were lower at Exponential than at other treatments, but not significantly different among treatments. Therefore, Exponential fertilization which is 50% fertilizer of other treatments would maximize seedling growth and minimize nutrient loss.

  • Laboratory-scale landfills (simulated landfills) were designed to determine the formaldehyde released into air and leachate from medium density fiberboard (MDF). Simulated landfills were constructed using cylindrical plastic containers containing alternating layers of soil and MDF for a total of five layers. The highest concentration of formaldehyde was found in the air and leachate from the MDF only treatment compared to treatments containing MDF and soil. At the end of the study (28 days), formaldehyde concentrations in air and leachate from treatments containing MDF and soil decreased by 70 percent and 99 percent, respectively, while the treatment containing MDF only still released formaldehyde into the air and leachate. Therefore, waste MDF after storing 4 weeks in water may be recycled as compost or mulch based on formaldehyde leaching. Also, these data indicate soil restricts formaldehyde release into air and leachate and provides new information about the fate of wood-based composite waste containing UF resin disposed in landfills.

  • The effect of propylene oxide, butylene oxide, furan resin, and vinylpyrrolidinone in controlling wood dimensional stability have been examined. Wood in the green or ovendry condition was treated with various chemical treatments using a vacuum-pressure procedure, and treated specimens were tested for tangential sweelling, moisture gain, and changes in sorption hysteresis. Results' indicate that propylene oxide, and butylene oxide enhanced with the crosslin king agent trimethylol propane trimethacrylate and applied to ovendry wood were the most efficient chemical treatments in controlling tangential sweeling caused by liquid water or water vapor, and in reducing water vapor adsorption. The sorption behavior of treated wood as depicted by the ratios of sorption was "very favorable" in most instances. In the particular case of furan resin treatments, ratios of sorption were improved from 25 to 100 percent as compared to those of untreated wood.

  • The production of high quality seedlings is a very important phase in silvicultural systems for successful reforestation or restoration. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively measure both growth performances and nutrient responses of Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Pinus densiflora, and Pinus koraiensis seedlings, which are commercially planted in Korea, according to the different types of soil improvement treatments. We applied soil brought (hereafter 'brought'), subsoil inversion (hereafter 'subsoil'), and mixture of brought soil with soil on nursery bed (hereafter 'mixing') in a permanent national nursery. Silt and clay contents were the highest at the subsoil treatment and organic material, soil nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations were the lowest at the brought treatment. The growth of F. rhynchophylla was the lowest at the subsoil treatment, but there were no significant differences among treatments. There were significant differences in only root nutrient concentrations of F. rhynchophylla among treatments: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium concentrations were the lowest at the subsoil or brought treatment. Mixing treatment increased N contents with deduction of N concentrations ('dilution') because of more dry weight increase compared with the amount of N uptake. This study suggested mix of brought soil with soil on a nursery bed in a permanently used nursery can economically be an effective technique to improve soil quality.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate short-term effects on soil properties and leaf characteristics after various treatments of soil amendments (organic fertilizer: 20 kg tree-1; compound fertilizer+wood-char: compound fertilizer 4 kg tree-1+wood-char 2 kg tree-1; lime fertilizer: 3 kg tree-1; mixed fertilizer: compound fertilizer 1 kg tree-1+organic fertilizer 10 kg tree-1+wood-char 1 kg tree-1; control) in chestnut (Castanea crenata S. et Z.) orchards of Jinju and Sancheong, Gyeongsangnam-do. Soil bulk density, soil pH, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, exchangeable Ca2+ and Mg2+ in chestnut orchards were not significantly affected by soil amendment treatments. However, leaf weight was significantly higher in the lime fertilizer ($0.65\;g\;leaf^{-1}$) in Jinju and the organic fertilizer ($0.68\;g\;leaf^{-1}$) in Sancheong than in the control treatments (Jinju: $0.46\;g\;leaf^{-1}$; Sancheong: $0.53\;g\;leaf^{-1}$). Leaf area was also significantly higher in the lime fertilizer ($79.1\;cm^2\;leaf^{-1}$) in Jinju and the soil amendments ($70.4\;cm^2\;leaf^{-1}{\sim}78.2\;cm^2\;leaf^{-1}$) in Sancheong than in the control treatments (Jinju: $56.2\;cm^2\;leaf^{-1}$; Sancheong: $60.5\;cm^2\;leaf^{-1}$). Nitrogen concentration of leaf increased significantly in the mixed fertilizer (2.51%) and the compound fertilizer+wood-char (2.50%) compared with the control (1.98%) treatments. The results suggest that soil properties were not affected by soil amendment treatments during short-term period, but leaf characteristics and nitrogen concentration can be an indicator of soil nutrient improvements in chestnut orchards.

  • Growth and nutrients of Xinjiang poplar (Populus alba var. pyramidalis) seedlings treated with fertilizers and soil amendments were examined in nursery and windbreak at Dengkou after 6 months of treatments in Inner Mongolia, China. Soil water content was $10\%$ higher than that at most soils in desert. Height and diameter growth and foliar nitrogen (N) concentration were higher at N and nitrogen plus phosphorus (N+P) fertilizer treatments than other treatments. However, there were no differences in foliar P concentration among treatments in windbreak and foliar P concentration was higher at control than at other treatments in nursery. Yuho treatment increased height and diameter growth. Nitrogen appeared an influenciug factor for early growth of Xinjiang poplar, and P had a minor affect on growth. More long-time studies were needed to elucidate the effects of fertilizers and soil amendments on growth and nutrients of Xinjiang poplar.

  • Restorative effect of forest settings is an emerging issue in the field of forestry. It is also the central question facing those currently engaged in the psychotherapeutic interventions is which treatments work. This study was performed to investigate the efficacy of forest experience on alcoholics' depression. Among 531 participants in forest healing camps, 47 alcoholics who participated all three sessions of the camps were selected for this study. Using pre-test and post-test group design with Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), mean changes in alcoholics' depression by completion of the camp was measured. The result of this study indicated that the 3-session of forest camp played significant role in reducing participants depression levels (i.e., positive changes in depression scores).
