Quantitative Analysis of Soluble Residues by Correction of Starch Content in Paperboard Grade (전분 함량 보정을 통한 판지류의 가용성 잔류물질 정량 분석)

  • Even though the notice No. 2010-11 of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety Administration that has been applied to analyze the content of the water soluble residue eluted from multi-layer paperboard was abolished in 2011, its application for the analysis on evaporation residue is still valid. There are very high possibilities that the noticed existing method gives the misleading result on the evaporation residue due to the water soluble starch eluted from the multi-layer paperboard. The quantitative analysis on water-soluble residue with starch content correction has been carried in the study using UV/Vis spectroscopy and HPLC. The UV/Vis spectroscopy absorbance analysis showed the large amount of the oxidized starch obtained from the aqueous residue eluted out of the multi-layer paperboard after the iodine, ${\alpha}$-amylase reaction, and starch hydrolysis. The residual content decreased by the correction through the enzyme hydrolysis.

Characteristics of Growth and Development of Empirical Stand Yield Model on Pinus densiflora in Central Korea (중부지방소나무의 생장특성 및 경험적 임분수확모델 개발)

  • This study was conducted to construct a empirical yield table for Pinus densiflora in real forest. Since existing normal yield tables have been derived by studying and analyzing communities in ideal environment for tree growth, those tables provide more over-estimated values than ones from real forest. Because of this, there are some difficulties to apply the tables to empirical forest except for normal forest. In this study, therefore, we estimated stand growth for real forest on P. densiflora as the representative species of conifers. We used 1,957 sample plot data of P. densiflora in central Korea from National Forest Inventory (NFI) system, and analyzed through estimation, recovery and prediction in order by using Weibull function as a diameter distribution model. Weilbull and Schumacher models were applied for estimating mean DBH and mean basel area and it was found that the site index for P. densiflora in central Korea ranges from 8 to 14 at reference age 30. According to site 12 in the stand yield table, the Mean Annual Increment (MAI) of P. densiflora was $4.42m^3/ha$ at 30 years of age. Compared to existing volume table constructed before, it is showed that MAI of this study were lower. According to the paired t-test that is conducted with the gap of volume values between normal forest and real forest by site index and age, the P-value was less than 0.001 which is recognized to have a statistically significant difference. Based on the results in this study, it is considered to be helpful for practical management and management policy on P. densiflora in central Korea.

Red Algae Pulp and Its Use in Papermaking

  • Red algae were used to make bleached pulp, from which paper handsheet samples were made. Red algae consists of rhizoidal filaments, epidermal tissues whose color were reddish, mucous carbohydrates, and other minor elements. Rhizoidal filaments of high brightness were obtained after extracting out mucous carbohydrates, and bleaching the remainder by using bleaching chemicals. The sizes and shapes of several rhizoidal filaments (or red algae pulp) from different red algae species were examined, and their handsheet properties were compared. Transparent and transluscent high density paper samples were made without applying refining process from the red algae pulp. White paper samples with good printability and excellent formation were made. We are developing pilot scale pulping and papermaking facilities at this time.

  • Recently, much of forest biomass has been obtained from the national forest management operation. Unfortunately, Korean Forest Services has a plan to use this forest biomass as energy fuels for wood pellets. Considering unhappy situation that about 80% of wood pulps has been imported, it is regarded as unwise decision. If forest biomass can be used to make pulps or other valuable woody products, we are able to double its economic value than the raw materials for wood pellets. In this study, we explored alternative raw materials for wood biomass used to make wood pellets. For this, fresh technology such as torrefaction was applied with the other lignocellulosic biomass.

Condition of Use on Management Support System of Private Forest by Forest Ownership Type - Focus on subjects of Sincere forest manager, Forest successor and Forest owner - (산림 경영주체별 사유림 경영 지원제도의 이용실태 - 독림가, 임업후계자, 일반산주를 대상으로 -)

  • This study was conducted to contribute to propose the improvement by looking into the use of private forest support system and then analyzing the status of support system and problems among forest owners. The study result showed that the recognition of private forest support system was 57.8% in sincere forest managers and 47.6% in forest successors, but only 17.6% in forest owner. The application experience was 79.2% in sincere forest managers, and 58.6% in forest successors, but 28.6% in forest owner which was significantly low as was shown in the recognition. Response on 'not knowing the support system' as the reason they were not able to ask for support was 36.1%, 43.0%, 78.6% in sincere forest managers, forest successors, and forest owner respectively in that order, which were the same results with the recognition. In the contrast, the effects of support for private forest management were higher in forest owner than sincere forest managers and forest successors, and overall level of satisfaction was also 28.5% in sincere forest managers and 36.8% in forest successors and 41.5% in forest owner. It turned out that forest owner who had somewhat low numbers of application had rather high satisfaction on overall management. Therefore, in order to attract active forest management from forest owner who take up most of forest owners in South Korea, the recognition on private forest support system is needed to improve and the local government and the Forestry Association should come up with active plans for public relations and support.

  • In this study, the possibility of the use of a new raw material in paperboard industry was investigated. Fly ash is one of the residues generated in the combustion of coal and generally captured from the chimney of coal-fired power plant. This material is utilized in many industries including cement, soil stabilization, composite etc., but it is not used in paper industry. Three types of fly ashes were collected from Hadong, boryeong and Seocheon steam power plants and we investigated their properties by scanning electron micrographs and particle size distribution. Papers were manufactured with KOCC and fly ashes, and the physical properties such as bulk, tensile strength, internal bond strength and ISO brightness were measured to identify the effects of fly ash on the paper properties.

  • In papermaking industry, inorganic fillers are widely used for the purpose of improving opacity, brightness, printability, uniformity and dimensional stability. They are also useful for production costs and energy savings. In the past, inorganic fillers in papermaking industry only focused on micro-scale but recently, new trials on nano-powdered technology are applying. Even nano-powdered fillers are rapidly utilized for improving the optical and surface properties in coating and surface sizing, there still have some problems in wet-end process due to poor dispersibility and retention. In this study, nano-particled calcium carbonate was produced by milling the PCC and its applicability between micro sized and nano sized calcium carbonated was compared in wet-end process, and finally the sheet properties were evaluated. Nano-PCC was not retained in sheet structure without applying retention system, but with retention system nano-powdered PCC was absorbed on fiber surface with expanding the fiber networks. The application of PAM-bentonite system has resulted in high ash retention and bulky structure for copier paper, and good optical properties in brightness and opacity. However, it required to solve the weakness of low tensile property due to interruption of hydrogen bonding by nano fillers.
