Vibration isolation of mechanical systems, in general, is achieved through passive or active vibration isolators. Passive vibration isolator has an inherenrt performance limitation. Whereas, active vibration isolator provides significantly superior vibration-isolation performance at the cost of energy sources and sensors. Recently, in many cases, such as suspension system, precision machinery ... etc, active isolation system outweighs its limitation. Therefore, many studies, researches, and applications are carried out in this field. In this study, vibration-isolation characteristics of an active vibration control system using electromagnetic force actuator are investigated. Several control algorithms including optimal, feedforward are used for active vibration isolation. From the experimental results of each algorithm, effective control algorithms for this active vibration-isolation system are proposed.
Complex and large lattice type structures are frequently used in design of bridge, tower, crane and aerospace structures. In general, in order to analyze these structures we have used the finite element method(FEM). This method is the most widely used and powerful method for structural analysis lately. However, it is necessary to use a large amount of computer memory and computational time because the FEM requires many degrees of freedom for solving dynamic problems exactly for these complex and large structures. For analyzing these structures on a personal computer, the authors developed the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM). This method is based on the concept of the transfer of the nodal dynamic stiffness coefficient matrix which is related to force and displacement vector at each node. And we suggested TSCM for free vibration analysis of complex and large lattice type structures in the previous report. In this paper, we formulate forced vibration analysis algorithm for complex and large lattice type structures using extened TSCM. And we confirmed the validity of TSCM through computational results by the FEM and TSCM, and experimental results for lattice type structures with harmonic excitation.
This paper develops a moving-magnet electromagnetic actuator for fast steering mirror (FSM). The actuator achieves a reasonable compromise between voice coil actuator and piezoelectric actuator. The stroke of the actuator is between the strokes of a piezoelectric actuator and a voice coil actuator, and its force output is a linear function of air gap and excitation current within our FSM travel range. Additionally, the actuator is more reliable than voice coil actuator as the electrical connection in the actuator is static. Analytically modeling the actuator is difficult and time-consuming. Alternatively, numerous finite element simulations are carried out for the actuator analysis and design. According to the design results, a real prototype of the actuator is fabricated. An experimental test system is then built. Using the test system, the force output of the fabricated actuator is evaluated. The test results validate the actuator analysis and design.

This paper presents the vibration analysis and the performance evaluation of cantilevers with probing tips for non-contact scanning probe microscopy. One of the current issues of the scanning probe microscopy technology is to increase the measurement speed, which is closely tied with the dynamic characteristics of cantilevers. The primary concern in this research is to investigate the relation between the maximum possible speed of non-contact scanning probe microscopy and the dynamic characteristics of cantilevers. First, the finite element analysis is made for the vibration characteristics of various cantilevers in use. The computed natural frequencies of the cantilevers are in good agreement with measured ones. Then, each cantilever is tested with topographic measurement for a standard sample with the scanning speed changed. The performances of cantilevers are analyzed along with the natural frequencies of cantilevers. Experiments are also performed to test the effects of how to attach cantilevers in the piezo-electric actuator. Finally, measurement sensitivity has been analyzed to enhance the performance of scanning probe microscopy.

A laboratory experiment is conducted is to investigate the behaviour of a low-mass-ratio and high aspect ratio flexible cylinder under vortex-induced vibration (VIV). A flexible cylinder with aspect ratio of 100 and mass ratio of 1.17 is towed horizontally to generate uniform flow profile. The range of Reynolds number is from 1380 to 13800. Vibration amplitude, in-line and cross-flow frequency response, amplitude trajectory, mean tension variation and hydrodynamic force coefficients are analyzed based on the measurement from strain gauges, load cell and CCD camera. Experimental results indicate that broad-banded lock-in region is found for the cylinder with a small Strouhal number. The frequency switches in the present study indicates the change of the VIV phenomenon. The hydrodynamic force responses provide more understanding on the VIV of a low mass ratio cylinder.
This paper represents a piezoelectric ultrasonic linear actuator with flexural vibration mode. The actuator is composed of two piezo ceramics, the elastic body, and the connecting tip. It is driven by the frictional force between the connecting tip and the linear motion guide. Unimorph actuators have flexural vibration. Its middle point is fixed so that suitable to the flexural vibration of $3/2\lambda$. These vibrations contribute to elliptical motion by mixed mode between longitudinal and transverse mode. It was generated when the ultrasonic electrical signals with 90 degree phase difference are applied to two ceramics. A linear movement can be easily obtained using the elliptical motion. The ATILA, FEM simulator has been used to design actuator and verify the kinetic and dynamic analysis. We used the ceramics of $20\times10\times1$ mm size and confirmed the flexural vibration of the $3/2\lambda$ at the 79 kHz through the scanning of 3D-vibrometer. The maximum velocity of actuator was 221 mm/sec and the thrust force of actuator was 2.7 N in 200Vp-p of additional voltage.
This paper focuses on the modeling and analysis a novel two-axis rotary normal-stress electromagnetic actuator with compact structure for fast steering mirror (FSM). The actuator has high force density similar to a solenoid, but its torque output is nearly a linear function of both its driving current and rotation angle, showing that the actuator is ideal for FSM. In addition, the actuator is designed with a new cross topology armature and no additional axial force is generated when the actuator works. With flux leakage being involved in the actuator modeling properly, an accurate analytical model of the actuator, which shows the actuator's linear characteristics, is obtained via the commonly used equivalent magnetic circuit method. Finally, numerical simulation is presented to validate the analytical actuator model. It is shown that the analytical results are in a good agreement with the simulation results.

This paper deals with the vibration and stability of a circular cylindrical shaft, modeled as a tapered thin-walled composite beam and spinning with constant angular speed about its longitudinal axis, and subjected to an axial compressive force. Hamilton's principle and the assumed mode method are employed to derive the governing equations of motion. The resulting eigenvalue problem is analyzed, and the stability boundaries are presented for selected taper ratios and axial compressive force combinations. Taking into account the directionality property of fiber reinforced composite materials, it is shown that for a shaft featuring flapwise-chordwise-bending coupling, a dramatic enhancement of both the vibration and stability behavior can be reached. It is found that by the structural tailoring and tapering, bending natural frequencies, stiffness and stability region can be significantly increased over those of uniform shafts made of the same material. In addition, the particular case of a classical beam with internal damping effect is also included.

Generally, noise in a reciprocating compressor is attributed to the driving force of a pump. However, close examination shows that the noise heard by customers finally results from radiation of a shell in a compressor, the noise caused by both transmission through a shell and resonance with the natural frequency of a shell. Therefore, the peak frequencies contributing to the overall level of a compressor' noise are closely concerned with vibration of a shell. That's why radiated noise by vibration can be reduced by changing the mode of a shell and by shifting the peak frequencies to other ranges, which are not globally related with the overall noise level. In this paper, the main peak frequencies are analyzed to reduce the radiated noise of a shell, and the vibration characteristics of a shell are examined through Frequency Response Function and Finite Element Analysis. Moreover, the Operational Deflection Shape for a shell is measured with consideration of real driving force of a pump. Finally, the optimum position on a shell, closely related to the main peak frequencies, is found, and the overall noise level caused by radiated noise of a shell is noticeably reduced by mass or stiffness modification of the position.
