In this paper, an identification method of impact force is proposed for composite structures. In this method, the relation between force histories and strain responses is first formulated. The transfer matrix, which relates the strain responses of sensors and impact force information, is constructed from the finite element method (FEM). Based on this relation, an optimization model to minimize the difference between the measured strain responses and numerically evaluated strain responses is built up to obtain the impact force history. The identification of force history is performed by a modified least-squares method that imposes the penalty on the first-order derivative of the force history. Moreover, from the relation of strain responses and force history, an error vector indicating the force location is defined and used for the force location identification. The above theory has also been extended into the cases when using acceleration information instead of strain information. The validity of the present method has been verified through two experimental examples. The obtained results demonstrate that the present approach works very well, even when the internal damages in composites happen due to impact events. Moreover, this method can be used for the real-time health monitoring of composite structures.
A composite element method (CEM) is presented to analyze the free and forced vibrations of a cracked Euler-Bernoulli beam with axial force. The cracks are introduced by using Christides and Barr crack model with an adjustment on one crack parameter. The effects of the cracks and axial force on the reduction of natural frequencies and the dynamic responses of the beam are investigated. The time response sensitivities with respect to the crack parameters (i.e., crack location, crack depth) and the axial force are calculated. The natural frequencies obtained from the proposed method are compared with the analytical results in the literature, and good agreement is found. This study shows that the cracks in the beam may have significant effects on the dynamic responses of the beam. In the inverse problem, a response sensitivity-based model updating method is proposed to identify both a single crack and multiple cracks from measured dynamic responses. The cracks can be identified successfully even using simulated noisy acceleration responses.

This paper presents a study on the analysis of impact responses taking into account sensor dynamics. The contact force between impacting bodies is modelled by using Hertz force-displacement law and linear damping function. Since the real impact force and acceleration at the contact surface of two colliding bodies are measured indirectly by the sensors, the measured outputs can be a little different from the real impact responses. Therefore, in this study, the importance of consideration of sensor dynamics in the impact problems of two colliding bodies is emphasized. In order to verify the appropriateness of the proposed contact force model, the drop type impact test using two kinds of sensors is carried out. Through the numerical analysis and experiment, the effect of sensor dynamics and characteristics on the contact force model is investigated.
A new method for both local damage(s) identification and input excitation force identification of beam structures is presented using the dynamic response sensitivity-based finite element model updating method. The state-space approach is used to calculate both the structural dynamic responses and the responses sensitivities with respect to structural physical parameters such as elemental flexural rigidity and with respect to the force parameters as well. The sensitivities of displacement and acceleration responses with respect to structural physical parameters are calculated in time domain and compared to those by using Newmark method in the forward analysis. In the inverse analysis, both the input excitation force and the local damage are identified from only several acceleration measurements. Local damages and the input excitation force are identified in a gradient-based model updating method based on dynamic response sensitivity. Both computation simulations and the laboratory work illustrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.
A big progress has been made for moving force identification from bridge dynamic responses in recent years. Current knowledge and the potentials on moving force identification methods are reviewed in this paper under main headings below: background of moving force identification, experimental verification in laboratory and its application in field.
This paper presents a theory concerning the beam element subjected to an eccentric rolling disk (or simply called the eccentric-disk-loaded beam element) such that the dynamic responses of a beam subjected to an eccentric rolling disk with its inertia force, Coriolis force and centrifugal force considered can be easily determined. To this end, the property matrices of an eccentric-disk-loaded beam element are firstly derived by means of the Lagrange's equations. Then, the overall property matrices of the entire vibrating system are determined by directly adding the property matrices of the eccentric-disk-loaded beam element to the overall ones of the entire beam itself. Finally, the Newmark direct integration method is used to solve the equations of motion for the dynamic responses of a beam subjected to an eccentric rolling disk. Some factors relating to the title problem, such as the eccentricity, radius and rotating speed of the rolling disk, and the Coriolis force and centrifugal force induced by the rolling disk are investigated. Numerical results reveal that the influence of last factors on the dynamic responses of the pinned-pinned beam is significant except the centrifugal force.
When a thin-walled multicell box girder is subjected to an eccentric load, the distortion becomes an important global response in addition to flexure and torsion. The three global responses appear in a combined form when a conventional shell element is used thus it is not an easy task to examine the three global responses separately. This study is to propose an analysis method using conventional shell element in which the three global responses can be separately decomposed. The force decomposition method which was designed for a single-cell box girder by Nakai and Yoo is expanded herein to multicell box girders. The eccentric load is decomposed in the expanded method into flexural, torsional, and multimode distortional forces by using the force equilibrium. From the force decomposition, the combined global responses of multicell box girders can be resolved into separate responses and the distortional response which is of primary concern herein can be obtained separately. It is shown from a series of extensive comparative studies using three box girder bridge models that the expanded method produces accurate decomposed results. Noting that the separate consideration of individual global response is of paramount importance for optimized multicell box girder design, it can be said that the proposed expanded method is extremely useful for practicing engineers.
This study presents a comprehensive investigation of wind load characteristics and wind-induced responses associated with different wind incidence angles and terrains of the 1000kV UHV substation frame. High-frequency force balance (HFFB) force measurement wind tunnel tests are conducted on the overall and segment models to characterize wind loads characteristics such as the aerodynamic force coefficients and the shape factors. The most unfavorable wind incidence angles and terrains for aerodynamic characteristics are obtained. A finite element model of the substation frame is built to determine the wind-induced response characters based on the aerodynamic force coefficients and bottom forces of the segment models. The mean and root mean square (RMS) values of displacement responses at different heights of the frame structure are compared and analyzed. The influence of wind incidence angle and terrains on wind-induced responses is also examined. The displacement responses in terms of the crest factor method are subsequently transformed into dynamic response factors. The recommended values of dynamic response factors at four typical heights have been proposed to provide a reference for the wind resistance design of such structures.

Response spectra of a building are made with a SDOF system taking into account a first mode shape, even though higher modes may affect on the dynamic responses of a high-rise building. A soft soil layer under a building also affects on the responses of a building. In this study, seismic responses of a MDOF system were investigated to examine the effects of higher modes on the response of a tall building by comparing them with those of a SDOF system including the kinematic interaction effect. Study was performed using a pseudo 3D finite element program with seven bedrock earthquake records downloaded from the PEER database. Effects of higher modes on the seismic responses of a tall building were investigated for base shear force and base moment of a MDOF system including story shear forces and story moments. Study results show that higher modes of a MDOF system contribute to a reduction of base shear force up to 1/4-1/5 of KBC and base moment. The effect of higher modes is more significant on the base shear force than on the base moment. Maximum story shear force and moment occurred at the top part of a building rather than at a base in the cases of tall buildings differently from short buildings, and higher modes of a tall building affected on the base forces making them almost constant at the base. A soft soil layer also affects some on the base shear force of a high-rise building independently on the soft soil type, but a soft soil effect is prominent on the base moment.
The forced vibration analysis of the outer-clamped spinnig annular disk with arbitrary in-plane is formulated to investigate the influence of non-uniform tension on the cutting accuracy of wafer cutting machine. The arbitrary in-plan force along the outer edge of an annular plate is expressed as a Fourier series. Galerkin method and modal superposition method are employed to obtain the forced responses under the static force and the impulse force in astationary coordinate. Through qualitative and quantitative analyses, it can be found that forced and impulse responses are sensitive to the non-uniformity of in-plane force, which can bring a bad effect to the accuracy of wafer cutting process. Also, in case of a spinning disk with non-uniform in-plane force, critical speed is required to define in a different way, compared with conventional definition in axi-symmetrical spinning disk.
