This study was carried out to investigate the effect of harvest stage of rape on nutritive values and quality of round baled rape silage in field of forage crops of Department of Animal Resources Development, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA. Rape was harvested at three different growth stages (flowering, milk and dough stage) and ensiled at each harvest stages. The content of moisture of rape increased with delayed harvest maturity. However, the content of moisture of rape was controlled by pre-wilting (24 hr. and 48 hr). The content of moisture in dough stage was similar to that of haylage. The content of crude protein in round baled rape silage increased with delayed harvest maturity, but the contents of acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber and total digestible nutrient decreased. The pH in all rape silage ranged from 3.8 to 4.4 at three different harvest stages, and pH in dough stage was higher than that of flowering and milk stages (p<0.05). The content of lactic acid of all rape silage increased with delayed harvest maturity (p<0.05), but the content of acetic acid decreased (p<0.05). And then, flieg's score revealed that there was an increase in order; flowering stage (100) = milk stage (100) > ripen stage (88).

This experiment was conducted to compare the agronomic characteristics and productivity inintroduced vetch cultivar at the experimental field of Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Livestock Research Institute from 1999 to 2000. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with three replications. The vetch cultivar used in this study were 8 cultivar(Haymaker plus, Common, Capello, Namoi, Victa, Aneto, Popany, Korean milk vetch). Namoi, Victa and Aneto cultivar were died during winter. The cultivar having the fastest flowering date was Korean milk vetch while the flowering date of Common was the latest as 22th May. The average dry matter(DM) content was 14.7% and crude protein(CP) content was 20.9%. Common showed the highest CP content by 23.1% and Korean milk vetch showed the lowest content by 18.0%. Average acid detergent fiber(ADF) and neutral detergent fiber(NDF) content were 33.5 and 42.5% respectively. All cultivar showed the first grade of RFV(relative feed value). The productivity of vetch cultivar were severely different according to the winter hardness. Common showed the highest DM yield by 8,664kg/ha, but the DM yield of Capello and Popany were low by 3,004 and 2,114kg/ha, respectively. The yield of CP and TDN(total digestible nutrient) also was high at Common. The results of this experiments indicated that the productivity of vetch cultivar was effected greatly depending on winter hardness, therefore it was thought winter hardness is the main factor for introducing vetch cultivar.

In order to investigate rice stem proteome in response to heat stress, rice plants were subjected to heat treatment at 42$^{\circ}C$ and total soluble proteins were extracted from stem tissues, and were fractionated with 15% PEG (poly ethylene glycol) and separated by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-DE). After staining of 2-DE gels, 46 of differentially expressed proteins were extracted, digested by trypsin, and subjected to matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis. Proteins were identified through database search by using peptide mass fingerprints. Among them, 10 proteins were successfully identified. Seven proteins were up- and 3 proteins were down-regulated, respectively. These proteins are involved in energy and metabolism, redox homeostasis, and mitochondrial small heat shock proteins. The identification of some novel proteins in the heat stress response provides new insights that can lead to a better understanding of the molecular basis of heat-sensitivity in plants, and also useful to molecular breeding of thermotolerant forage crops.

This experiment was carried out to breed a very early maturing variety of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) in Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA, Cheonan from 2015 to 2017. New variety of Ryegrass, 'Green Call' is a diploid variety with green in leaf color and has semi-erect growth habit in late autumn and erect growth habit in early spring, 'Green Call' was on April 25 in heading date as a early-maturing variety. Also 'Green Call' was narrower by 2 mm in flag leaf width, longer by 1.3 cm in flag leaf length and shorter by 5 cm in plant height than those of control variety, 'Florida 80', respectively. 'Green Call' was also thicker by 0.14 mm in stem thickness and strong in winter hardness. Dry matter (DM) yield (11,592 kg/ha) of 'Green Call' was similar to that of 'Florida 80'. Total digestible nutrient (TDN), crude protein (CP) and relative feed value (RFV) of 'Green Call' were 60.8, 10.3 and 96.7 % which are 2.1, 1.1, 6.9 % higher than those of 'Florida 80', respectively. Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of 'Green Call' were 35.5 and 58.9 % which are 2.7 and 2.3 % lower than those of 'Florida 80', respectively.

The study was conducted to determine effects on forage productivity, feed value, grazing intensity and livestock productivity in growing Korean native female goat grazing in native pasture. Its with average initial body weight of $14.10{\pm}3.6kg$ and an average age of 4 months were used in this study. Dry matter content of native pasture was the highest at $33.48{\pm}2.56%$ in June, and the content was significantly increased from spring to autumn (p<0.05). Crude protein was maintained between 11% and 12% on average. Nutrient content was maintained at a certain level in native pasture, but there were differences due to the different types of wild grasses produced in each season. The productivity of forage crops increased from June, but decreased after August and showed a characteristic of grassland where productivity decreased rapidly in spring and autumn. The average grazing intensity are 39 head/ha. Black goat average daily gain was 80.2g/d. The stable weight gain in grazing is that the nutrient requirement of the black goat was met by supplementing the concentrated feed during grazing. study, can be expected that the productivity of livestock can be increased through the proper feeding of supplementary feed and maintenance of grazing intensity.

This study was conducted to develop the technique for cultivation of forage crops using swine slurry in fallow paddy land located in the mid-mountain area (FPL). The field experiments were carried out from 2007 to 2009 on FPL at Kumsan, Chungbuk province in Korea. Swine slurry was prepared which decayed for 6 months. The experimental plots were consisted of seven treatments; tall fescue-based mixed pasture applied with chemical fertilizer (Control), mono-tall fescue pasture (MTF), tall fescue-based mixed pasture (TFBM), mono-Perennial ryegrass (MPR), mono-Italian ryegrass (MIR), mono-Red clover (MRC and mono), Reed canarygrass (MRCG) applied with swine slurry. The field of tall fescue-based pasture had been sown with a grasses mixture containing 'Fawn' tall fescue, 'potomac' orchardgrass, 'Reveille' Perennial ryegrass, and 'kenblue' Kentuky bluegrass, 'Kenland' Red clover. Seeding rates were 16, 6, 4, 2 and 2 (kg) per ha, respectively. DM yields of forages and rates of grass coverage were higher in MTF, TFBM and MRCG as compared with control treatment. This result means that FPL has contained with favorable conditions for growing grass, because forage productivity is more than 14.5 tons per ha per year in fallow paddy land. In addition, the farmer can save the trouble of repeated plowing and sowing every year, with the introduction of perennial grasses. The farmer must conduct the re-seeding and induce the improvement of management methods for the elevation of the persistence of red clover and perennial ryegrass, because both red clover and perennial ryegrass having high nutritive value and palatability was less persistent. Therefore, we suggest that FPL may be the good land for forage production utilizing swine slurry and swine slurry can be applied on FPL without any negative effects on DM production and the property of soil. FPL of Korea can be better utilized by applying swine slurry to the mono and/or mixed swards.

Each year, vast amount of agricultural crop residues are produced (about 60 percent of the total crop production), which have not been effectively utilized because they are bulky and lignocellulosic, thus having little fuel energy per unit volume. Using treated plant residues as animal feeds could result in an ultimate saving of fossil fuel energy and a more effective utilizat ion of products created by the photosynthetic process. Feeding the residues to animals would decrease the pollution potential, but these residues are difficult for even a ruminant animal to digest. If cellulosic wastes produced from cereal grain straw and wood could be digested, land now used for producing forage add grain cnuld be shifted to food crops for humans. During the past decade, considerable efforts were made to utilize crop residues. These utilization methods can be broadly grouped into for categories: (1) direct uses, (2) mechanical conversions, (3) chemical conversions and (4) biological conversions. Agricultural crop residues consist mainly of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, pectin, andother plant carbohydrates. The nature of the constituents of these residues can be best utilized as one of the five FS: Fuel, Fiber, Fertilizer, Feed and Food. Many processes have teen proposed and some are in industrial production stage. However, economics of the process depend on the location where availability of other competitive products are different.
In a study about minerals cycling in grassland agro-ecosystem, investigation on relations among two minerals, potassium(K) and magnesium(Mg), and nitrogen(N) was performed. Four kinds of diets different in K and N levels were fed to four goats with a Latin-square method and $2{\times}2$ factorial design. As the basal diet, press cake silage prepared from Italian ryegrass was used because of its uniformity and comparatively low mineral concentrations. Supplementation of K and N were made using potassium bicarbonate and urea. In the experiment, it was clearly shown that high K concentration in the forage crops is the main reason of the low utilization of Mg in ruminant animals. However, high nitrogen intake resulted in the increase of magnesium retention, urinary potassium excretion, water intake and volume of urine and in the decreases of potassium intake minus urinary potassium excretion. The results of high nitrogen intake seemed to be produced in the following order;increase of urine, increase of water intake, increase of urinary potassium excretion, and decrease of intake minus urinary potassium excretion. The amount of potassium intake minus urinary potassium excretion had significantly close relationships with magnesium utilization and serum magnesium concentration. As a conclusion, higher nitrogen intake by ruminants seemed to be preferable for magnesium utilization through increased water intake and urinary potassium excretion, if the sufficient drinking water could be supplied to ruminants.
This experiment was carried out to breed a medium maturing variety of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) in Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Institute of Animal Science, Rural Development Administration (RDA), Cheonan from 2019 to 2020. An Italian ryegrass variety, IR 604 is a tetraploid variety with green in leaf color and has half-erect growth habit in late autumn and erect growth habit in early spring, IR 604 was on May 17 in heading date as a medium maturing variety. Also, IR 604 was longer by 11 cm in flag leaf length and longer by 1.3 cm in plant height than those of the control variety, Kowinner, respectively. IR 604 was also thicker by 1.0 mm in stem thickness and strong in winter hardness. Dry matter (DM) yield (11,036 kg/ha) of IR 604 was 16.6% higher than that of Kowinner. Total digestible nutrient (TDN), crude protein (CP) and relative feed value (RFV) of IR 604 were 60.4, 13.8% and 100.6 which are 1.4, 3.3%, 7.7 higher than those of Kowinner, respectively. Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of IR 604 were 35.5 and 56.7% which are 1.3 and 3.6% lower than those of Kowinner, respectively.
Forage productivity of cropping systems of rye - silage corn, silage corn - oats, silage corn - rape was studied in the south-eastern part of Korea where rice black-streaked dwarf virus(RBSDV) infection of corn are severe. Rye(cv. Paldanghomil) was planted on Oct. 20 of 1986 and harvested 10 times from April 5 to May 5 at the 5-day intervals in 1987, corn (cv. Suweon 19 and Jinjuok) was planted 5 times from April 5 to May 15 at the 10-day intervals in 1987, and oats(cv. Megwiri) and rape (cv. Velox) were planted 4 times from Sept: 4 to 25 at the 7-day intervals and harvested 4 times from Nov. 10 to Dec. 10 at the 10-day intervals in 1987. Considering yield, nutrition value, and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), forage productivity of the cropping systems was compared. As harvesting time of rye delayed, plant height, dry matter(DM) yield, percent DM, crude fiber, and digestible DM yield increased, but crude protein, crude fat, and IVDMD decreased. However, nitrogen free extract was not different among the harvesting dates. As planting date of corn delayed, RBSDV infection rate increased. but DM yield of silage decreased. However, silage yield of Jinjuok was higher, but RBSDV infection rate was lower compared with Suweon 19 at all planting dates. DM yield of oats and rape decreased as planting date delayed. However, at Sept. 4 and 11 plantings yield of oats on Nov. 10 was much lower than that of rape, but the differences in yield between two crops decreased with delayed harvesting, and yield was similar on Dec. 10. A cropping system harvesting rye around April 20 and followed by planting corn in late April was best among the rye-corn systems considering yield and nutrition value of both crops. However, among the corn-oats or corn-rape cropping systems early April planting of corn and followed by early Sept. planting of oats or rape showed best results with similar yield potential of the best rye-corn cropping system.
