Developing a decision support system for selecting new crops

  • Due to changes in the agricultural market environment and both overseas and domestic farming conditions, uncertainties in agricultural production and management are becoming greater. Hence, there is a stronger need for farmers to choose crops in the optimal condition. This research aims to introduce the result and process of developing a decision support system for selecting crops, aimed to assist farmers in selecting the optimal crops most suitable in the given situation. There are basically three main factors to consider in the decision-making process for farmers when selecting a crop to introduce to their lands. First of all, one must consider how much profit crop A will produce when it is cultivated. Secondly, one must consider which crop to cultivate in order to earn a certain amount of profit. Thirdly, one must consider what is the best way to maximize Farm A's business profit. For instance, a farm may have land as its resource, and one must research which location, type of crop, level of technology, and so forth, to maximize profit.This research creates a database of the profitability of a total of 180 crop types by analyzing Rural Development Administration's survey of agricultural products income of 115 crop types, small land profitability index survey of 53 crop types, and Statistics Korea's survey of production costs of 12 crop types. Furthermore, this research presents the result and developmental process of a web-based crop introduction decision support system that provides overseas cases of new crop introduction support programs, as well as databases of outstanding business success cases of each crop type researched by agricultural institutions.

Effectiveness of worksite-based dietary interventions on employees' obesity: a systematic review and meta-analysis

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to provide scientific evidence on the effectiveness of worksite-based dietary intervention to reduce obesity among overweight/obese employees. MATERIALS/METHODS: Electronic search was performed using Ovid Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL databases. The keywords used were "obesity," "nutrition therapy," and "worksite." The internal validity of the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was assessed using the Cochrane's Risk of Bias. Meta-analysis of selected studies was performed using Review Manager 5.3. RESULTS: A total of seven RCTs with 2,854 participants were identified. The effectiveness of dietary interventions was analyzed in terms of changes in weight, body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol, and blood pressure. The results showed that weight decreased with weighted mean difference (WMD) of -4.37 (95% confidence interval (CI): -6.54 to -2.20), but the effectiveness was statistically significant only in short-term programs < 6 months (P = 0.001). BMI also decreased with WMD of -1.26 (95% CI: -1.98 to -0.55), but the effectiveness was statistically significant only in short-term programs < 6 months (P = 0.001). Total cholesterol decreased with WMD of -5.57 (95% CI: -9.07 to -2.07) mg/dL, demonstrating significant effectiveness (P = 0.002). Both systolic (WMD: -4.90 mmHg) and diastolic (WMD: -2.88 mmHg) blood pressure decreased, demonstrating effectiveness, but with no statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS: The worksite-based dietary interventions for overweight/obese employees showed modest short-term effects. These interventions can be considered successful because weight loss was below approximately 5-10 kg of the initial body weight, which is the threshold for the management of obesity recommended by the Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network (SIGN).

도라지(Platycodon grandiflorum)의 임상적 효과에 대한 체계적 문헌 고찰 (The Clinical Effects of Platycodon grandiflorum: A Systematic Review)

  • Platycodon (Platycodon grandiflorum) is used as a food and medicinal ingredient worldwide, particularly in Northeast Asia. Although a large number of studies have been conducted to determine its medicinal efficacy, there is still a paucity of literature summarizing the clinical activity of Platycodon. In this systematic review, we aimed to summarize the clinical efficacy of Platycodon. All literature describing the clinical efficacy of Platycodon was collected from international databases, and relevant papers were carefully evaluated for eligibility. Data were extracted from the selected papers and quality evaluation was conducted in accordance with the standards provided by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), with all procedures being conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2009 checklist guidelines. After the removal of 342 papers, 644 studies were fully screened for their titles and abstracts, among which, 19 studies were finally selected for full summarization. Extraction of data indicated evidence of the effectiveness of Platycodon in the treatment of respiratory system-related diseases and cancer, and in the provision of immunity. However, we found that the quality and objectivity of evaluation, management of variable factors, sample size, and reproducibility were generally poor. Although Platycodon has shown potential antiviral, antibacterial, anticancer, and antidepressant effects, and promotion of immunity in clinical settings, it was not possible to integrate objective indicators to conduct a meta-analysis due to the lack of literature and insufficient studies. More investigations in the clinical setting should be conducted to confirm the functional effects of Platycodon.

Systematic Literature Review on Coronavirus Infectious Disease-19 and Dental Masks

  • Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is transmitted primarily through droplets, and dental practitioners are at risk of occupational exposure to SARS-CoV-2 infection owing to direct contact with the patient's mouth, aerosols from dental procedures, and saliva. Wearing a mask is believed to be the best method of protection against infection, and a systematic literature review was conducted on whether the dental masks used in dentistry are effective in preventing Coronavirus Infectious Disease-19 (COVID-19). Methods: We used PubMed, Google Scholar, DBpia, NDSL, and KISS databases for this study. Of the 917 documents narrowed down by the search terms "Coronavirus, COVID-19, and dental," 83 documents were collected and studied. Ultimately, 42 of these papers were selected for analysis after considering duplication from the flow chart of the literature selection process. Results: While dental masks are often used when treating patients with unknown COVID-19 status, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety stated that the use of dental masks is insufficient in preventing cross-transmission of COVID-19; instead, it was recommended that N95 masks, which correspond to KF94 masks, should be worn daily. On the other hand, wearing a dental mask and following precautions such as hand hygiene may not pose a significantly higher risk of infection than wearing an N95 mask when treating COVID-19 patients. Conclusion: There is an ongoing discussion regarding the use of dental masks when treating dental patients, and many argue that different types of masks should be selected according to the degree of infection and the individual's respiratory condition. By considering the safety and efficacy of dental masks in preventing infection, improvements can be made in the management of COVID-19 and dental-related infections.

Chinese Patients with Gastric Cancer Need Targeted Adjuvant Chemotherapy Schemes

  • Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common cancers in China. Adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) is a routine auxiliary treatment for GC recommended by the guidelines issued in 2011 by the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China, but the relevant credible consequences in China have been insufficient because of China's late start and ethical concerns. Methods: A series of databases, including Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Chinese database of the National Knowledge Infrastructure and the VIP database, were searched by 2 reviewers independently for studies investigating AC for GC through March 2012. The retrieved literature was screened according to the eligibility criteria. Results: A total of 35 randomized control trials (RCTs) were subjected to the final analysis, including 4,043 patients in treatment group and 3,884 in the control group, as well as 4 clinical-control trials (CCTs), which accessed the final analysis with 238 and 252 patients, respectively. AC reduced the risk of death as a protective treatment with statistical significance (HR=0.91, 95%CI: [0.85, 0.97], P=0.002), and it seemed more effective for Asian than non-Asian patients. The effects of AC were not influenced by the starting time (P>0.05). D2 lymphadenectomy-based chemotherapy was effective (HR=0.89, 95%CI: [0.80, 0.99], P=0.04). Oral S-1 40 mg/m2 after D2 lymphadenectomy might be a better choice for Asians with advanced GC and might result in a greater reduction of adverse events than in non-Asian patients. GRADE quality assessment determined that the strength of the evidence from foreign studies from Europe, the United States and Asian countries other than China was high, while it was moderate for Chinese studies. Conclusion: AC was effective or even curative in Chinese patients in general, although it is still necessary to optimize a targeted AC scheme for Chinese patients with GC.

배양 분리법을 통한 젓갈 내 원핵 세균 군집 분석 및 신규 미생물의 분리 (Analysis of Prokaryote Communities in Korean Traditional Fermented Food, Jeotgal, Using Culture-Dependent Method and Isolation of a Novel Strain)

  • 우리나라의 전통 발효 식품인 젓갈로부터 배양 분리법과 분자생물학적 분석법을 이용하여 원핵 세균 군집을 분석하고, 신규 미생물 분리를 목표로 하였다. 젓갈은 생산 지역과 주재료를 고려하여 17 종을 선정하였으며, 이들 젓갈 시료를 적정 희석배수로 희석하여 12종류의 미생물 선택배지에 도말, 배양한 후 나타난 집락(colony)을 형태학적 특성에 따라 무작위로 308개를 선정하여 분리하였다. 순수 분리된 미생물은 PCR 방법을 이용하여 16S rRNA 유전자의 염기서열을 분석한 후, 기존에 보고된 미생물 database와 비교함으로서 17종의 젓갈 내 미생물 군집을 확인하였다. 젓갈의 발효 및 숙성 과정에 관여하는 lactic acid bacteria (Leuconostoc 속, Weisella 속, Lactococcus 속, Lactobacillus 속, Carnobacterium 속, Marinilactibacillus 속, Tetragenococcus 속)와 Bacillus 속, Pseudomonas 속, Micrococcus 속, Brevibacterium 속, Microbacterium 속과 Kocuria 속이 17가지 젓갈에서 광범위하게 분리되었으며, Salinicoccus 속, Halomonas 속, Cobetia 속, Lentibacillus 속, Paracoccus 속, Psychrobacter 속이 소수 분리되었다. 또한 분리된 미생물의 계통학적 분석을 통하여 기존에 보고된 적이 없는 신규 미생물 14종을 분리하였다.

Association between Dietary Factors and Breast Cancer Risk among Chinese Females: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

  • Background: Evidence for associations between dietary factors and breast cancer risk is inconclusive among Chinese females. To evaluate this question, we conducted a systematic review of relevant case-control and cohort studies. Methods: Studies were systematically searched among 5 English databases (PudMed, ScienceDirect, Wiley, Clinicaltrials.gov, and Cochrane) and 3 Chinese databases (CNKI, WanFang, and VIP) until November 2012. Random effects models were used to estimate summary odds ratios (ORs) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Thirty one case-control studies and two cohort studies involving 9,299 cases and 11,413 controls were included. Consumption of both soy and fruit was significantly associated with decreased risk of breast cancer, with summary ORs of 0.65 (95% CIs: 0.43-0.99; I2=88.9%, P<0.001; N=13) and 0.66 (95% CIs: 0.47-0.91; $I^2$=76.7%, P<0.001; N=7), respectively. Consumption of fat was significantly associated with increased risk of breast cancer (OR=1.36; 95% CIs: 1.13-1.63; $I^2$=47.9%, P=0.088; N=6). There was nonsignificant association between consumption of vegetables and breast cancer risk (OR=0.72; 95% CIs: 0.51-1.02; $I^2$= 74.4%, P<0.001; N=9). However, sensitivity analysis based on adjusted ORs showed decreased risk of breast cancer was also associated with consumption of vegetables (OR=0.49; 95% CIs: 0.30-0.67). Conclusion: Both soy food and fruit are significantly associated with decreased risk of breast cancer among Chinese females, and vegetables also seems to be protective while dietary fatexerts a promoting influence.

EST로부터 개발된 SSR 마커를 이용한 상추 유전자원 및 유통품종의 식별 (Identification of Lettuce Germplasms and Commercial Cultivars Using SSR Markers Developed from EST)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 상추(Lactuca sativa)의 expressed sequence tag(EST)로부터 simple sequence repeat(SSR) 마커를 개발하고, 개발된 EST-SSR 마커를 이용하여 상추의 3가지 야생종의 유전자원 9점과 61개의 유통품종을 식별하는 것이다. NCBI 데이터베이스로부터 총 81,330개의 상추 EST를 대상으로 SSR을 탐색하였고, 총 4,229개의 SSR을 발견하였다. SSR의 반복 motif 중 trinucleotide(59.12%, 2,500개)가 가장 많았고, 그 다음으로 dinucleotide(29.70%, 1,256개), hexanucleotide(6.62%, 280개) 순의 분포를 나타내었다. EST로부터 총 474개의 EST-SSR primers를 개발하였고, 이 중 267개의 primer를 9점의 유전자원과 61품종에 대한 유전적 다양성 평가에 활용하였다. 267개의 마커 중 47개의 EST-SSR 마커가 7개 품종 내에서 다형성을 보였으며, 이 중 다형성 정도와 반복 재현성 및 밴드의 선명성을 고려하여 26개의 EST-SSR 마커를 선발하였다. 최종 선발된 26개의 SSR 마커를 이용하여 70개 공시재료를 분석한 결과 대립유전자 수는 총 127개였으며, 최소 2개에서 9개의 분포를 나타내었으며 마커당 평균 대립유전자 수는 4.88개를 나타내었다. PIC평균값은 0.542로 나타났으며, 0.269-0.768의 범위를 나타내었다. 70개 공시재료의 유전적 거리는 0.05-0.94로 나타났으며, 유사도 지수 0.34를 기준으로 할 때 7개의 주요 그룹으로 나누어졌다. 26개의 EST-SSR 마커를 이용한 유전적 다양성 분석 결과 9점의 유전자원과 61개의 유통품종이 마커의 유전자형에 의해 모두 식별이 되었다. 본 연구를 통해 신규 개발된 EST-SSR 마커는 상추의 품종식별과 구별성, 균일성, 안정성 검정에 유용하게 활용될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

비만치료를 목적으로 마테(Yerba Mate, Ilex paraguariensis)를 함유한 복합투여물의 효과 및 부작용에 대한 고찰 (A Review of Combination Effects and Adverse Effects of Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) on the Treatment of Obesity)

  • Objectives : The aim of this study is to review the combination effects and adverse effects of Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) on the treatment of obesity. Methods : Four databases were searched, including Pubmed, National assembly library, RISS4u, and NDSL, for studies published before March 31, 2016 using the keywords 'yerba mate', 'Ilex paraguariensis', and those related to 'obesity'. Clinical trials, and both in vivo and in vitro studies were classified according to the following categories: publication year, nationality, types and composition of test compounds, combination effects, adverse effects, and safety. Results : A total of 16 articles (14 clinical trials, one in vivo, one in vitro) were included in the analysis. Combination effects were reported from six YGD (Yerba Mate, Guarana, Damiana, Zotrim), five Meltdown, one Shred-matrix, one DBX (DymaBurn Xtreme), one XSIII research study, and adverse effects were reported from two YGD (Zotrim), four Meltdown, one Shred-matrix and one MetEF research study. YGD and Shred-matrix increased satiety while YGD and MetEF had adverse gastrointestinal effects potentially due to guarana. Meltdown and Shred-matrix increased energy expenditure and fat oxidation and had the adverse effects of increased heart rate and blood pressure due to the thermogenic effect of caffeine and yohimbine. DBX increased resting energy expenditure but no difference was observed in respiratory exchange ratio. XSIII reduced body weight gain and food intake more than each of the extracts did on their own. Conclusion : Taken together, the combination effects and adverse effects differed according to the composition of test compounds and the ratio of ingredients. Multicomponent approaches should be used for treating multifactorial diseases such as obesity. As a general conclusion, there is a place for a combination of herbal components including yerba mate, based on the principle of Kun-Shin-Choa-Sa for the treatment of obesity.

사과, 복숭아, 딸기 품종에 따른 비타민 B1, B2 및 나이아신 함량 비교 (Comparison of Vitamin B1, B2, and Niacin Contents According to the Cultivars of Apple, Peach and Strawberry)

  • 본 연구에서는 다소비 농산물인 사과, 복숭아, 딸기의 품종에 따른 수용성 비타민 B군 중 B1, B2 및 나이아신을 분석하여 함량 차이를 비교하고, 식품성분표의 기초자료로 활용하고자 하였다. 품종에 따른 사과의 비타민 B1 함량은 0.063-0.208 mg/100g, 비타민 B2 함량은 0.006-0.031 mg/100g의 범위의 값으로 검출되었으나, 나이아신은 검출되지 않았다. 품종에 따른 복숭아의 비타민 B1 함량은 0.014-0.276 mg/100g, 비타민 B2 함량은 0.019-0.042 mg/100g, 나이아신 함량은 0.298-1.096 mg/100g 범위의 값으로 검출되었다. 품종에 따른 딸기의 비타민 B1 함량은 0.112-0.394 mg/100g, 비타민 B2 함량은 0.001-0.027 mg/100g, 나이아신 함량은 0.388-0.809 mg/100g 범위의 값으로 검출되었다. 따라서 사과, 복숭아, 딸기 등의 과일의 영양성분 분석 데이터베이스 구축시 품종 요인을 고려할 필요가 있다고 판단된다. 이와 더불어 과일의 수확시기, 재배방법, 환경적인 요인에 따른 차이가 있을 것으로 판단되며 그에 따른 추가적인 연구가 필요하다.
