  • When papers each made with sea-algae pulp 1%, 5% and soft, hard wood pulp were aged for 12days. Paper made with soft wood pulp is 30% loss of folding endurance, made with hard wood pulp is 50% loss of folding endurance. On the other, papers each made with 9% sea-algae pulp and soft, hard wood pulp were 18% loss of folding endurance. In the aging test of paper made with different freeness paper made with 300ml CSF, is more effective than 400ml CSF, 500ml CSF.

  • Folding endurance, bending fatigue and monotonic tensile tests of 4 kinds of Cu foil on flexible substrate was performed to investigate the relationship between folding or bending endurances and tensile characteristics. The repeated 5.3 or 2.0% strain was applied to Cu foil in folding endurance test or bending fatigue test while monitoring the electrical resistance. Elastic modulus, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, ductility, and toughness were obtained by monotonic tensile test on the same samples. The Cu foil with higher toughness and ductility showed higher reliabilities in folding or bending fatigue. However, elastic modulus and yield strength did not show any relationship with folding and bending reliability. This is because the failures of Cu foil by folding or bending fatigue were closely related to the fracture energy of metal.

  • In this study, the effect of soxhlet extraction on dewaxing of the aged beeswax-treated paper was examined. To do this, soxhlet extraction of the aged beeswax-treated paper performed with different reflux conditions and then measured the dewaxing efficiency and change in the various properties such as tensile strength, folding endurance, color and brightness. Also, an artificial aging test was executed in order to investigate the effect of soxhlet extraction on the preservability of the dewaxed paper. As the result of FT-IR analysis, a peak area of CH and COOH group, which are main band of beeswax, was decreased or removed after soxhlet extraction. The decreasing rate of each peaks were increased depending on reflux time. After dewaxing, the physical property such as MIT type folding endurance and tensile strength was decreased. And $L^*$ value and brightness were increased while $a^*$ and $b^*$ value were decreased due to the remove of color compounds in beeswax. The more color deviation (${\Delta}E$) is expected with higher reflux times. As the result of artificial aging, preservability of two dewaxed papers except of DP_SE(C) sample was higher than that of untreated paper i.e. beeswax-treated paper.

  • To explore the paper materials for restoration of the Annals of the Joseon Dyansty, durability of the three type of the traditional Korean Papers were estimated in this study, through moist heat artificial aging test. Three types(D, F, and G) which showed the best preservation performance in dry heat and UV treatment in the previous study were selected and artificial accelerated aging treatment with moist-heat process was conducted; the viscosity change rate was D>G>F; folding endurance G>D>F; $L^*$ value F>D>G; $a^*$ and $b^*$ change rate D>G>F; brightness decrease rate D>G>F, suggesting paper F showed the least change rate in physical/optical properties. Also the CLSM image observation showed fair coherence among fibers and confirmed paper mulberry. And in FDI extraction from each sample, paper F showed the highest value. Overall, paper F (traditional glossy paper) showed the highest stability against thermal treatment. It confirms that paper F is suitable as restoration paper for tributary remains including the annals of the Joseon Dynasty for its steady strength/viscosity decrease rate and color change rate.

  • This study is to test the possibility of applying the low-molecular weighted waste cellulase, which is produced in the process of cellulase production, to paper making. After experimenting on high-crystallized non-wood fibers with beating catalyst. I got the result that the condition for the optimal effect is temperature 40~6$0^{\circ}C$, the time 90min to 120min, pH 5.0 to 6.0, the enzyme contents 0.3% and that the effect of beating such as slight reduction of fiver viscosity, increase of water retention value(WRV) and shortening of fiber length was increased with waste cellulase. Through this process, the density, folding endurance, tensile strength and burst strength of paper was remarkably increased, which is inferred to result from the increased flexibility of fiber by individual characteristics of non-wood fiber, which was high-crystallized by penetrated low-molecular weight cellulases in the fiber.

  • Neunghwaji(Embossed patterned paper) is a unique paper used for a traditional book cover in Korea. The research was carried out to investigate Neunghwaji's features. Physical property was studied through a test of tensile strength and folding endurance. Also, comparative analysis of virus resistance and waterproof ability was undertaken on Neunghwaji. 1. Folding endurance test showed that strength of non-embossed CB and HB decreased during deteriorating duration. Embossed CN and HN showed the strength increasing at early stage and decreasing from the 27th day of the deteriorating duration. Tensile strength was decreasing in both cases as deterioration progressed. 2. Growth of Arthrinium sp. fungus on embossed paper was 10% less than plain paper while Cladosporium sp. showed 20~30% less growth. Amur cork dyeing(H) showed 10~30% lower fungi growth than Gardenia seed dyeing(C). The result indicated that embossed paper has better virus resistance than Hanji, and Amur cork dyeing has better virus resistance than Gardenia seed dyeing. 3. Average contact angle of CN, CB, HN, and HB was $85{\sim}92^{\circ}$ and NON-N and NON-B was $59{\sim}63^{\circ}$. In detail, CN's contact angle was $1{\sim}7^{\circ}$ higher than CB's; HN was $1{\sim}6^{\circ}$ higher than HB. Therefore, it was found that embossed paper has higher contact angle than Hanji thus the former has better waterproof ability. The research suggested production technique of Neunghwaji and studied its features related to the technique. Neunghwaji was confirmed to have superior quality to Hanji though further study regarding above test result is needed to complement the research.

  • This study was carried on paper mulberry bast fibers, which were cut in the length of it's chip by three kinds. And they cooked by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and ammonium oxalate (AMOX), and pulping process was studied to inquire some properties of hand made papers. The results were as follows. AMOX pulps had $10\~17\%$ higher than NaOH, but amounts of the residual lignin of it's pulps and residual ash were high, and it surely can't be superior. In the freeness of pulps, AMOX pulps were higher than that of NaOH, but they showed tendency to opposite in view of relation of chip's length kinds. For the AMOX pulps, the physical characteristics test results were higher long fiber pulps than short fiber pulps. Specially, in folding endurance long fiber pulps were a very strong. NaOH pulp's physical characteristics test had shown results that were opposite of there of the AMOX pulps, if the length of the fiber is longer, the strengthts generally decreased. To get the optimum fiber's length according to use of paper and pulping method, they must be fractionate chip's length. The long fibers in NaOH pulps affected the paper quality greatly to length of chips.

  • Guar gum is added to the pulp suspension at the suction side of the fan pump just before the sheet is formed on either a fourdrinier or cylinder machine. Guar gum replaced and supplements these hemicelluloses in paper bonding with many advantages, which include improved sheet formation with a more random distribution of pulp fibers. But, guar gum has serious storage problem. This material has easily decayed after High-temperature conditions such as summer. In this study, various properties of cotton handsheet were measured to solve the problem of deformation while storing guar gum and to improve the durability. After aging, which is one of the durability tests, cotton handsheet with 0.2% and 0.3% of A-PAM showed improved mechanical properties and bursting index and folding endurance of cotton handsheet with 0.3% of A-PAM were similar to those with guar gum. The yellowness loss of cotton handsheet with synthetic polymers was lower than those with guar gum.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the possibility for the coffee filter paper of Hanji. In this study, the samples for Hanji filter papers were prepared with three different mulberry fiber contents of 10, 30 and 50%(w/w). Surface brightness and apparent density of hand-made Hanji decreased with increasing mulberry fiber contents. However, values of thickness, tensile strength, wet tensile strength, burst strength, and folding endurance for hand-made Hanji increased by increasing the contents of mulberry fibers due to fiber-to-fiber bonding. The results of the coffee extraction test using the developed filter papers showed no significant differences between commercial filter paper and Hanji filter paper. Therefore, Hanji filter paper containing more than 30%(w/w) mulberry fiber may have potential uses for the dripped coffee filter application from a physical property point of view.
