  • This paper discussed on the stability of elastic material subjected to dry friction force for low boundary conditions: clamped free, clamped-simply supported, simply supported-simply supported, clamped-clamped. It is assumed in this paper that the dry frictional force between a tool stand and an elastic material can be modeled as a distributed follower force. The friction material is modeled for simplicity into a Winkler-type elastic foundation. The stability of beams on the elastic foundation subjected to distribute follower force is formulated by using finite element method to have a standard eigenvalue problem. It is found that the clamped-free beam loses its stability in the flutter type instability, the simply supported-simply supported beam loses its stability in the divergence type instability and the other two boundary conditions the beams lose their stability in the divergence-flutter type instability.

  • Nonlinear aeroelastic analyses of composite wing with flap are performed considering free-play and dynamic stiffness of actuator. Doublet-Hybrid method is used for the calculation of subsonic unsteady aerodynamic forces. Free-play is modeled as an asymmetric bilinear spring and is linearized by using the describing function method. The linear and nonlinear flutter analyses show that the flutter characteristics are significantly dependent on the free-play and dynamic stiffness. From the nonlinear flutter analysis, various types of limit cycle oscillations are observed in a range of air speeds below or above the linear divergent flutter boundary.

  • Modern aircraft are required to carry various external stores mounted at different locations on the wing. Sometimes the attachment of stores to an aircraft wing leads to flutter speed reduction, which is a very severe aeroelastic problem. In order to suppress structural vibration and expand the flutter boundary of the aircraft with stores, it is necessary to investigate the main problems and characteristics of them. In addition, active vibration control may be required because passive vibration isolators show limited capabilities for the various wing/store configuration. In this paper, therefore, the flutter stability to the various wing/store configurations was investigated and active vibration control of wing/store model was performed using a piezoelectric actuator.

  • The main purpose of the present work was to study the dynamic instability of a three-layered, thick composite sandwich beam with the functionally graded (FG) flexible core subjected to an axial compressive follower force. Flutter instability of a sandwich cantilever beam was analyzed using the high-order theory of sandwich beams, for the first time. The governing equations in general for sandwich beams with an FG core were extracted and could be used for all types of sandwich beams with any types of face sheets and cores. A polynomial function is considered for the vertical distribution of the displacement field in the core layer along the thickness, based on the results of the first Frosting's higher order model. The governing partial differential equations and the equations of boundary conditions of the dynamic system are derived using Hamilton's principle. By applying the boundary conditions and numerical solution methods of squares quadrature, the beam flutter phenomenon is studied. In addition, the effects of different geometrical and material parameters on the flutter threshold were investigated. The results showed that the responses of the dynamic instability of the system were influenced by the follower force, the coefficients of FGs and the geometrical parameters like the core thickness. Comparison of the present results with the published results in the literature for the special case confirmed the accuracy of the proposed theory. The results showed that the follower force of the flutter phenomenon threshold for long beams tends to the corresponding results in the Timoshenko beam.

  • An analysis is presented on the stability of elastic cantilever column subjected to uniformly distributed follower forces as to the influence of the elastic restraints and a tip mass at the free end. The elastic restraints are formed by both the translational and the rotatory springs. For this purpose, the governing equations and boundary conditions are derived by using Hamilton's principle, and the critical flutter loads and frequencies are obtained from the numerical evaluation of the eigenvalue functions of this elastic system. The added tip mass increases as a whole the critical flutter load in this system, but the presence of its moment of inertia of mass has a destabilizing effect. The existence of the translational and rotatory spring at the free end increases the critical flutter load of the elastic cantilever column. Nevertheless their effects on the critical flutter load are not uniform because of their coupling. The translational spring restraining the end of cantilever column decreases the critical flutter load by coupling with a large value of tip mass, while by coupling with the moment of inertia of tip mass its effect on the critical flutter load is contrary. The rotatory spring restraining the free end of cantilever column increases the critical flutter load by coupling with the tip mass, but decreases it by coupling with the moment of inertia of tip mass.

  • The effect of viscous damping on stability of beam resting on an elastic foundation subjected to a dry friction force is analytically studied. The beam resting on an elastic foundation subjected to dry friction force is modeled for simplicity into a beam resting on Kelvin-Voigt type foundation subjected to distributed follower load. In particular, the effects of four boundary conditions (clamped-free, clamped-pinned, pinned-pinned, clamped-clamped) on the system stability are considered. The critical value and instability type of columns on the elastic foundation subjected to a distributed follower load is investigated by means of finite element method for four boundary conditions. The elastic foundation modulus, viscous damping coefficient and boundary conditions affect greatly both the instability type and critical load. Also, the increase of damping coefficient raises the critical flutter load (stabilizing effect) but reduces the critical divergence load (destabilizing effect).

  • An advanced model for the linear flutter analysis is introduced in this paper. Higher-order beam structural models are developed by using the Carrera Unified Formulation, which allows for the straightforward implementation of arbitrarily rich displacement fields without the need of a-priori kinematic assumptions. The strong form of the principle of virtual displacements is used to obtain the equations of motion and the natural boundary conditions for beams in free vibration. An exact dynamic stiffness matrix is then developed by relating the amplitudes of harmonically varying loads to those of the responses. The resulting dynamic stiffness matrix is used with particular reference to the Wittrick-Williams algorithm to carry out free vibration analyses. According to the doublet lattice method, the natural mode shapes are subsequently used as generalized motions for the generation of the unsteady aerodynamic generalized forces. Finally, the g-method is used to conduct flutter analyses of both isotropic and laminated composite lifting surfaces. The obtained results perfectly match those from 1D and 2D finite elements and those from experimental analyses. It can be stated that refined beam models are compulsory to deal with the flutter analysis of wing models whereas classical and lower-order models (up to the second-order) are not able to detect those flutter conditions that are characterized by bending-torsion couplings.

  • This paper presents the flutter analysis and optimum design of axially functionally graded box beam cantilever wing section by considering various geometric and material parameters. The coupled dynamic equations of the continuous model of wing system in terms of material and cross-sectional properties are formulated based on extended Hamilton's principle. By expressing the lift and pitching moment in terms of plunge and pitch displacements, the resultant two continuous equations are simplified using Galerkin's reduced order model. The flutter velocity is predicted from the solution of resultant damped eigenvalue problem. Parametric studies are conducted to know the effects of geometric factors such as taper ratio, thickness, sweep angle as well as material volume fractions and functional grading index on the flutter velocity. A generalized surrogate model is constructed by training the radial basis function network with the parametric data. The optimized material and geometric parameters of the section are predicted by solving the constrained optimal problem using firefly metaheuristics algorithm that employs the developed surrogate model for the function evaluations. The trapezoidal hollow box beam section design with axial functional grading concept is illustrated with combination of aluminium alloy and aluminium with silicon carbide particulates. A good improvement in flutter velocity is noticed by the optimization.

  • In this paper aeroelastic behavior of 3-phase nano-composite beam-plate with double delaminations is investigated. It is tried to study the effect of carbon nano-tubes (CNTs) on critical flutter pressure of reinforced damaged nano-composite structures. In this case, the CNTs are appending to the polymer matrix uniformly. The Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka model is used to obtain the effective material properties of 3-phase nano-composite beam-plate. To investigate the aeroelastic behavior of delaminated beam-plate subjected to supersonic flow, it is assumed that the damaged segments are forced to vibrate together. The boundary conditions and auxiliary conditions at edges of delaminated segments are used to predict critical flutter pressure. The influence of CNTs and different delamination parameters such as delamination length, axial position and its position through thickness are investigated on critical flutter pressure.
