  • A membrane bioreactor (MBR) was designed using polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF)-type hollow fiber membrane modules with a treatment capacity of 10 ton/day. A pilot plant was installed in a sewage treatment plant and was operated with an intermittent aeration method which avoids any concentration gradient of suspended solids (SS) in the MBR. For continuous operation, the pilot plant was first tested with influent (mixed liquor suspended solid:MLSS of 1000-2000 mg/L) of aeration tanks in the sewage treatment plant. The MBR was pre-treated with washing water, 10% ethanol solution, 5% NaOCl solution and finally washing water, one after another. To demonstrate the effect of the MBR on sewage treatment, compared with conventional activated sludge processes, we investigated the relationships among permeate amount (LMH), change in operation conditions, influent MLSS level and sludge production. It was found that the optimum aeration rate and suction pressure were $0.3\;m^3$/min and 30~31 cmHg, respectively. Under stable conditions in aeration, suction pressure, influent flow rate and drainage, the SS removal efficiency was more than 99.99% even when the MLSS loading rate changes. Compared with conventional activated sludge processes, the MBR was more effective in cost reduction by 27% based on permeate amount and by 51.5% on sludge production.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to examine the degree of dental fear according to the experiences of the preventive dental care services. Methods: A self-administered survey was conducted in the subjects of male and female teenagers who lived in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do areas, and 231 copies of collected data for a month from July 26, 2017 were analyzed to find the following results. Results: In terms of the experiences of the preventive dental care services, they were classified in the order of preventive scaling (67.5%), education of toothbrushing (60.6%), fluoride application (49.8%) and sealant (44.2%). For the degree of dental fear according to their general characteristics, treatment avoidance factor ($2.56{\pm}1.19$) in the married was higher than that in the unmarried. All of treatment avoidance, physiological response and fearful stimulus induction factor, and the entire degree of fear were higher when there were experiences of the preventive dental care services than those without such experiences. The factors affecting the degree of dental fear included dental health conditions, experiences of toothbrushing education, sealant and fluoride application. In case those without the experiences considered their dental health condition was not healthy, the degree of dental fear was increased. Conclusions: This study verified that the degree of dental fear was increased in case no experiences of the preventive dental care services. Therefore, it is necessary to seek out the measures for promotion of the preventive dental care services, to reduce the degree of dental fear and enhance the dental health.

  • Electrical properties of carbon filler/PVdF [poly(vinylidene fluoride)] composite were investigated as a funtion of carbon filler/PVdF ratio in the range of 0.2${\sim}$0.5. Three kinds of comercialzied conductive carbon blacks such as Hiblack 41Y, KE300J, and KE600J, and carbon nanofibers prepared by the catalytic chemical vapor deposition of $C_2H_4$ over Ni-Cu catalysts were used as the carbon fillers. The electrical conductivity of carbon filler/PVdF composites were in the range of 0.65 to 13.5 S/cm depending the fillers' electrical conductivity ranging from 5.6 to 23.1 S/cm. Among the carbon fillers used, the KE600J carbon black showed the highest conductivity both in the composite and filler itself because of its high degree of graphitization due to the high-temperature thermal treatment and its high surface area due to the activation treatment.

  • Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), PVDF-HFP, hollow fiber membranes were prepared by the dry/wet spinning technique using different polyethylene glycol (PEG) concentrations as non-solvent additive in the dope solution. Two different PEG concentrations (3 and 5 wt.%). The morphology and structural characteristics of the hollow fiber membranes were studied by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and void volume fraction. The experimental permeate flux and the salt (NaCl) rejection factor were determined using direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) process. An increase of the PEG content in the spinning solution resulted in a faster coagulation of the PVDF-HFP copolymer and a transition of the cross-section internal layer structure from a sponge-type structure to a finger-type structure. Pore size, nodule size and roughness parameters of both the internal and external hollow fiber surfaces were determined by AFM. It was observed that both the pore size and roughness of the internal surface of the hollow fibers enhanced with increasing the PEG concentration, whereas no change was observed at the outer surface. The void volume fraction increased with the increase of the PEG content in the spinning solution resulting in a higher DCMD flux and a smaller salt rejection factor.

  • Ethyl methacrylate (EMA) monomer coupling onto the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film surface was attempted to enhance the interfacial adhesive force between PVDF-polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bilayer films via dielectric barrier corona discharge. The interfacial forces were quite enhanced when PVDF films were treated by corona discharge in an EMA 1% atmosphere. The contact angle of PVDF films decreased due to corona treatment. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that the carbon and oxygen content of the PVDF film surface increased with corona discharge while the fluoride content decreased. The curve fitting of XPS $C_{1s}$ peaks revealed that the non-polar C-C bonded carbon and oxygen-bonded carbon increased gradually with corona treatment, while the fluorine-bonded carbon decreased.

  • Poly vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVdF-HFP) membrane were prepared by the electrospinning technique. We had applied a DLC coating process and then the surface of the membrane and the contact angle change was investigated. Electrospun fibrous PVdF-HFP membrane surface became to wrinkled shape by Ar plasma treatment and treatment conditions. The wrinkled surface of PVdF-HFP membrane became super-hydrophilic. However, after DLC coating process, it became super-hydrophobic. The resulting surfaces were characterized by water contact angle measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Resultantly it was recognized that the wettability characteristics of the membrane surfaces depended on the chemical composition and surface morphology.

  • A new procedure to produce poly(vinylidene fluoride)/boron nitride hybrid membrane is presented for application in membrane distillation (MD) process. The influence of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) incorporation on the performance of the polymeric membranes is studied through the present investigation. For this aim, h-BN nanopowders were successfully synthesized using the simple chemical vapor deposition (CVD) route and subsequent solvent treatments. The resulting h-BN nanosheets were blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) solution. Then, the prepared composite solution was subjected to phase inversion process to obtain PVDF/h-BN hybrid membranes. Various examinations such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), wettability, permeation flux, mechanical strength and liquid entry pressure (LEP) measurements are performed to evaluate the prepared membrane. Moreover, Air gap membrane distillation (AGMD) experiments were carried out to investigate the salt rejection performance and the durability of membranes. The results show that our hybrid PVDF/h-BN membrane presents higher water permeation flux (${\sim}18kg/m^2h$) compared to pristine PVDF membrane. In addition, the experimental data confirms that the prepared nanocomposite membrane is hydrophobic (water contact angle: ${\sim}103^{\circ}$), has a porous skin layer (>85%), as well competitive fouling resistance and operational durability. Furthermore, the total salt rejection efficiency was obtained for PVDF/h-BN membrane. The results prove that the novel PVDF/h-BN membrane can be easily synthesized and applied in MD process for salt rejection purposes.

  • This study compared and analyzed the occluding effects of fluoride compounds and desensitizers, which are commonly used in dental clinics, on dentinal tubules. This study also evaluated the persistence of the active ingredients over time by performing toothbrushing with an electric toothbrush. Thirty-five molar teeth, which had been extracted within the past 3 months from healthy people without tooth decays, amalgam fillings, or dental crowns, were divided into 4 pieces each. Of these, 135 teeth pieces were used as study specimens. These specimens were divided into a control group, an untreated group, and 5 experimental groups (acidulated fluoride gel, fluoride varnish, Gluma, Super Seal, and SE-Bond). The specimens were then subjected to toothbrushing equivalent to 1 week (140 times), 2 weeks (280 times), and 4 weeks (560 times), and the occluding effects on dentinal tubules in 3 regions of each specimen were examined under a scanning electron microscope. The fluoride varnish treated group showed the highest degree of dentinal tubule occlusion effects during the first, second, and fourth weeks of toothbrushing, with the SE-Bond treated group showing the second highest degree and the Gluma treated group showing the lowest degree. After 4 weeks of toothbrushing, the Gluma treated group and the Super Seal treated group showed the lowest degrees of dentinal tubule occlusion effects. In summary, the fluoride varnish treated group and the SE-Bond treated group displayed higher occlusion effects even after 4 weeks of treatment than did the other experimental groups. Therefore, it is the authors' belief that fluoride varnish and SE-Bond are effective for treating dentinal hyperesthesia.

  • The purpose of this study was to collect basic data for the development of effective oral health education program in elementary school. The subjects in this study Were 604 fourth-year, fifth-year and sixth-year students of an elementary school in Seoul, Oral health awareness and behaviors were surveyed and analyzed. The findings of this study were as follows: 1. The most common time for toothbrushing was after dinner(62.0%) and before bedtime(62.3%). By school year, the largest number who brushed their teeth after dinner were fourth and fifth graders while the greatest number who did so after breakfast were sixth graders. Seventy-four percent of respondents brushed the teeth twice or more a day. By school year, the fifth-year students brushed their teeth the least while girls outperformed the boys in daily toothbrushing frequency(p<0.05). Regarding the intake of cariogenic food, 62.1% took that kind of food once or more a day. By school year, the fifth graders took the most (p<0.05), and girls took more cariogenic food than the boys(p<0.05). 2. Ninety percent of the respondents had visited a dental clinic. By grade, the sixth-year students had visited a dental clinic more frequently and girls more frequently than boys. Eighty percent of the respondents visited a dental clinic to receive treatment but just 12.3% visited a dental clinic to prevent oral diseases. Concerning the fear of dental treatment, only 14.4% expressed fear. School year made no difference, yet the percentage of girls who experienced fear was higher than that of boys(p<0.05). Regarding preventive treatment, 39.7% experienced pit and fissure sealing and 24.2% experienced the application of fluorides. All the students hadn't much experience in preventive treatment regardless of school year -- gender didn't make a difference. 3. Fourty-six percent of respondents had a preference for the fluoride mouth rinsing program; 38.4% wanted that program to continue. As to the reason for preference, 38.2% preferred it because of the prevention of dental caries, 43.0%, the largest percentage, didn't favor it because they found it too much trouble to do(some of the respondents gave two different answers). 4. Despite an increase in the frequency of toothbrushing at the right time, they still took cariogenic food frequently. Their visit to a dental clinics also aimed at treatment more than at prevention, and they had very narrow experience of preventive treatment Furthermore, the fluoride mouth rinsing program failed to draw their interest Therefore, it is recommended that a successful oral health education program should be developed.

  • The purposes of this study were to examine the effect of different fluoridated bleaching solution on the changes in physical and chemical characteristics of tooth. Forty-eight bovine incisors were divided into four groups to receive bleaching treatments, over a 14days period, as follows: no treatment; 10% carbamide peroxide (CP) bleaching; 10% CP containing 0.05% fluoride; and 10% CP containing 0.1% fluoride. All the specimens were highly polished and discolored with commercial COCK.Color and enamel changes were determined with colorimeter, microhardness tester, scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscopy. All the collected data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA. After the bleaching, bleached groups showed the color change(E*). Microhardness of 10% CP group decreased after tooth bleaching. But microhardness of containing fluoride bleached groups increased after tooth bleaching. Enamel surface of 10% CP bleached group showed any apparent morphology and roughness changes compared to the enamel which was stored in distilled water only. These results demonstrated that Fluoridated 10% Carbamide Peroxide have appreciable bleaching effect on bovine teeth and were not adversely affects enamel. Supporting influence of fluoride-containing bleaching solution on remineralization could be observed and further research must be carried out in various active environments to confirm these results clinically.
