  • We designed the model picture of Tourism Botanical Garden, as a kind of theme park, in which we could enjoy flowers all the year round and the glorious tints of its autumn foliage. It would be very important to decide what kinds of trees should be planted and where to plant them. We selected the appropriate flowers and trees according to their value of appreciation and flowering time and the grand view around there and the weather conditions of the central region. We selected perennial plants as native plants, according to their color, flowering time and for the convenience of maintenance. And we selected some kinds of culture plants to show the seasonal change and diversity, according to their color and flowering time. We adopted the roof-tile pattern of Pakjae Kingdom to design the basic model of the garden, and the area was divided into eight sections. Six of them were divided again into four small planting areas from the outside respectively, according to the kinds of trees; pine-tree area, native flowering plant area, flowering tree area and flowering shrub area. The last two sections are by a lake, so they could make a beautiful landscape of waterfront. For the effective and economic operation of the garden, some kinds of flower trees and shrubs, which are little damaged by blight and are needless to prune, were selected. And perennial plants were also selected, because we don't have to change them into other plants, so we could cut down the expenses. As for the culture plants, they could be easily replaced with other culture plants in the flowering time, to show seasonal change and the harmony with the scenery around the garden.

  • This study was carried out to obtain the basic informations on the flowering habit, pollination patterns and seed setting in Hosta plantaginea Aschers. Flowers came out in the night with white color. Almost fertilization seemed to be out by wind in early and full flowering. But bearing pods by insects and fertilization rate by wind were increased by interval of flowering and particular scent slowly decreased in after flowering. Bearing pods and seeds setting rate were $65.0\%,\;40.9\%$ per peduncle after artificial pollination, and also $33.3\%,\;24.3\%$ in natural pollination, respectively. The flowering times was all around seven to eight o'clock at night and optimum temperature for pollination was $25{\sim}28^{\circ}C$.

  • This work was aimed to evaluate supplementation of honey as sole carbon source on the fermentation characteristics of wine fermented with fruit of flowering cherry and honey(flowering cherry-honey wine). Physiochemical changes of flowering cherry-honey wine(2 L) were investigated during 30 days in fermentation by strain of Saccharomyces bayanus (EC-118). At the beginning of fermentation, fructose was most abundant sugar then glucose and sucrose were followed. As fermentation proceeded, utilization of glucose by S. bayanus (EC-118) was faster than fructose, so that the ratio of fructose/glucose was increased. During fermentation for 30 days, pH and viable yeast count was changed rapidly between 0 to 5 days, while $^{\circ}Brix$(%) decreased gradually for 30 days. Final total titratable acidity, pH, $^{\circ}Brix$(%) and ethanol content of flowering cherry-honey wine were 0.43%, pH 3.5, $9.7^{\circ}Brix$(%) and 14%, respectively. Our finding demonstrate that flowering cherry-honey could be benefical supplements for wine production.

  • A medicinal legume crop, Cassia tora L., was grown with four different seeding dates in 1986 field condition to find the flowering and pod setting characteristics. Initial flowering date and flowering duration were almost same between plants sown from April 20 to May 30, but those of plants seeded at June 20 were significantly delayed and shortened. Last flowering date, however, was not different between plants sown from April 20 to June 20. C. tora plants showed indeterminate flowering habit, and bloomed vigorously from fourth date after initial flowering. Numbers of flowers, ovules and pods per plant were decreased along with delaying seeding date, and ovule to flower ratio and pod to flower ratio were greatly decreased in June 20 seeding plot. Flowers bloomed on second week from initial flowering showed the highest number of ovules and pods, and flowers bloomed after early September did not develop to matured pods. Maximum values of pod length, number of seeds per pod and 1000-grain weight were obtained from flowers bloomed on second week from initial flowering of plants sown from April 20 to May 30, and first week in June 20 seeding plot.

  • The need to synchronize flowering in two lines of different maturities is frequently encountered in hybrid com (Zea mays L.) seed production. To establish the methods for synchrony of flowering in parent lines of different maturities be effects of clipping at 4 and 6-leaf stages of growth and two levels, clear polyethylene mulching and five different planting dates on flowering date growth and seed yield of two dent com inbred lines of different maturities were evaluated Clipping just above the shoot-apex delayed pollen sheeding 6 to 9days and silking 5 to 13 days but reduced stand and seed yield 30 to 70% and 67 to 81%. respectively. Clipping 5cm above the shoot apex delayed flowering 1 to 4 days without stand reduction but reduced yield 3 to 29%. Laterclipping was slightly more effective for delaying flowering than earlier clipping but reduced stand more severely when clipped just above the shoot apex. Under clear polyethylene film mulching, flowering of two lines was 13 to 15 days earlier and seed yield of B68 (late line) was significantly increased. As planting was delayed from April 18 to June 13, the number of days from planting to flowering of two lines decreased due to increase in air temperature. However, growing degree days (GDD) from planting to flowering of each lines was similar regardless planting dates indicating that GDD can be satisfactoryly used for choosing the planting dates of parent lines of different maturities. Seed yields of two lines were decreased with delaying planting dates.

  • The inhibiotory effect of ethphon on the flowering in Lemna perpusilla 6746 was shown to be related to sucrose concentrations and dilution factors of Hutner's medium. When grown in 1/10-strength Hutner's medium under 10(14) cycles, the plants have been completely inhibited in the floral induction by ethephon (>5ppm) in the presence of sucrose (>20 mM) in the meduim. However, in a less diluted Hutner's medium (1/2-strength), the inhibition of flowering by ethephon was observed to be partially diminished by sucrose at a high concentration (30mM), while a low concentration of sucrose enhanced the inhibitory effect of ethephon in flowering. As inductive dark periodswere extended, the effects of both compounds were partially nullified. Since no significant amount of ethylene possibly released in ethephon decomposition in the medium was detected, the inhibitory effect of ethephon in flowering was postulated to be exerted only through ethylene production within the plants. Plants were incubated in 10 ppm ethephon-containing medium during either dark or light periods, singly or periodically. The most effective single treatment with ethephon was observed during the 4th dark period, when formation of floral stimulus was assumed to be completed beyond a critical level. This postulation can be partially supported by a fact that the plants should be exposed to at least more than four consecutive 10(14) cycles for flowering.

  • Several growth characteristics of two ornamental tobacco species, Nicotiana sanderae and N. affinis, were investigated in this study. Also effect of temperature and daylength on the flowering of the tobacco plants were evaluated to obtain basic information on breeding and cultivation. 1. The plants were great in high temperature-long day at the early stage and in low temperature-short day at the late stage of plant growth, for both Nicotana species. At the early growth stage the leaf length N. sanderae was great in high temperature-long day, and that of N. affinis was great in high temperature-short day period, while at the late stage of the plant growth the leaf lengths were more significantly effected by the temperature rather than daylength. Leaf width and leaf shape index were less sensitive to the conditions. 2. For both of the species, the total number of tobacco leaves not much influenced by the temperature and daylength. 3. There were no significant differences for budding and flowering period between the two species, both of which were sensitive to temperature and daylength with more influence by daylength than temperature. 4. Number of floral stalks, number of flower and flowering period were not much influenced by temperature and daylength; however, N. affinis had 2 more floral stalks, 31 more flowers, and 6 day longer flowering period than N. sanderae.
