  • We report a new distribution of Sedum kiangnanense D. Q. Wang & Z. F. Wu on the Korean Peninsula. This species was first reported in China and is distributed in Anhui and Zhejiang provinces. We found this species on Hongdo Island in Heuksan-myeon, Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do in the Republic of Korea. S. kiangnanense is well distinguished from other species in Korea by 4- or 5-verticillate leaves on the sterile stems and a spatulate leaf shape. We provide its morphological description, detailed illustrations, and a key to related taxa. We have given this species a new Korean name, Ip-kkot-dol-na-mul, which means flower-like leaved sedum.

  • This paper analyzed the collections of Dries Van Noten and found the influences of oriental ethnic costumes. The oriental looks which he had shown in his collections are followings : Largely, the menswear designs of Van Noten took the concept of an easy and loose style which is a common shape in oriental ethnic costumes. Especially various transformations of layered look were found in his collections. Design ideas of Van Noten's womenswear style included variations of a sarong style, a kimono style, and etc. Also in his womenswear collections, various styles of layered look were shown. He often used lustrous fabrics like satin, brocade, and damask which are driven from the oriental region. His collections had Chinese dragon-or flower-pattern, Japanese geometric pattern, and Indian henna pattern. The patterns were embroidered or gilded.

  • A leaf spot of cotton rose(Hibiscus mutabilis) occurred severely in the flower beds of cotton rose around Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongnam Province in Korea. The causal fungus was identified as Corynespora cassiicola on the basis of cultural and morphological characteristics of the fungus. The fungus grew well on potato dextrose agar and the colony color was gray to brown. Conidia were solitary or catenate, obclavate to cylindrical in shape, and pale olivaceous brown or brown in color. They had 420 pseudosepta, and measured $35.2{\sim}173.6{\times}8.8{\sim}19.9{\mu}m$. Conidia germinated as a bipolar type. Conidiophores were pale to mid brown in color, and measured $74.2{\sim}275.6{\times}3.8{\sim}10.8{\mu}m$. Optimal temperature for mycelial growth was $30^{\circ}C$. The fungal isolate grown on PDA showed strong pathogenicity to cotton rose plant. This is the first report on the corynespora leaf spot of cotton rose(Hibiscus mutabilis) caused by Corynespora cassiicola in Korea.

  • In spatial structures with large spaces, one important issue in structures with large spaces is how to carry the weight of the roof. A tensegrity cable dome structure is a kind of soft structural system using the tension cable and compression column as a main element. The tensegrity cable dome is built into a variety of shape around the world but then a collapse accident is increasing. Owing to a collapse accident we must grip of the collapse mechanism to prevent an accident and construct the structure with safety and economy. In this study, I investigated the unstable characteristics of the Geiger-type and Flower-type tcnsegrity cable dome structures, which is the lightweight hybrid structures using compression and tension elements continuously, according to the difference of loading conditions.

  • Mesophyll protoplasts derived from young leaves of Nicotiana rustica and N. tabacum cv Burley 21 were fused with the aid of polyethylene glycol(PEG). Cytological examination of protoplasts after PEG treatment revealed 12.8 % heterokaryocytes. After 7 weeks culture, the hybrid calli showing greenish white with a compact appearance were selected in contrast to parental type calli tinged with white or green color. The somatic hybrid plants were verified by morphological, biochemical and cyclological analysis. A heterosis effect for plant vigor and height was observed but the shape of leaves and flower characteristics were intermediate between N. tabacum and N. rutstica. The isozyme banding patterns for peroxidase of somatic hybrid lines were compared with the parent species. A number of isozyme bands derived from both parental species were found in the hybrids. Somatic hybrid plants have been successfully backcrossed to the parental N. tabacum particularly with somatic hybrid plants as female parents. These hybrid plants yielded small seeds, only few which were germinable.

  • Two modifications of the ${\alpha}\;and\;{\beta}$ forms of propyl mercaptan nickel(II) cluster, [$Ni_6(SCH_2CH_2CH_3)_{12}$], have been synthesized and their crystal structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The alkyl groups are away from $Ni_6$ ring in $\alpha$ form whereas they are near to the Ni atom in $\beta$ form. The distance of Ni-H in $\beta$ form [2.576(5) $\AA$] is much shorter than that in $\alpha$ form [3.101(2) $\AA$]. In the crystal lattice of $\beta$ form, the whole structure forms a flower shape.

  • A taxonomic revision of Deutzia in Korea was conducted based on critical observations of wild populations and herbarium specimens. Species delimitations were re-evaluated on the basis of morphological characters and distributions resulting in the recognition of five taxa. The texture of leaf, flower disk and capsules, the shape of leaf, inflorescence and capsules are useful diagnostic traits at the specific level. The five taxa are well distinguished from each other. Deutzia grandiflora var. baroniana can be distinguished by its distribution and calyx from Deutzia uniflora, which are morphologically similar. Deutzia paniculata Nakai, a rare and endemic plant, is characterized by having panicle in inflorescences. On the other hand, Deutzia glabrata Kom. is occasionally confused with Deutzia parviflora, but the most distinctive characters include the surface of leaves, the surface and size of capsules. Photographs and a key to five species of Deutzia were provided in addition to distribution.

  • In April of 2002, the gray mold disease occurred severely on kalanchoe (Kalanch oe blossfeldiana) grown in a nursery in Daesan-myon, Changwon City, Korea. The lesions were started with water-soaked spot and the leaves discolored from the tip and became gray or dark and gradully expanded to whole leaf. The conidia and mycelia of pathogen appearedd on flower, flower stalk and stem. Conidia were gray, 1-celled, mostly ellipsoid or ovoid in shape and were 8~17 ${\times}$5~12${\mu}m$ in size. Conidiophores were 13~34${\mu}m$ in size. The sclerotia were formed abundantly on potato-dextrose agar. The optimum temperature for sclerotial formation was $20^{\circ}C$. Pathogenicity of the causal organism was proved on Kalanchoe blossfeldiana according to Koch,s postulate. The causal organism was identified as Botrytis cinerea based on mycological characteristics. This is the first report on gray mold of Kalanchoe(Kalanchoe blossfeldiana) caused by Botrytis cinerea in Korea.
