Fish respond sensitively to light, so it is possible to develop fish management technology using this feature. In this study, we developed a light-based fish barrier and analyzed itsblocking effect using the difference in illuminance for the major fish species in Korea, bass and bluegill. The light was generated by a light emitting diode and the facility was installed vertically from the bottom. Considering the fish's ability to travel upstream, the flow rate was divided into three stages (0.2, 0.1, and 0.05 m/s). To prevent the learning effect, an experiment was carried out with fish that had rested for more than one day in a rearing tank. The experiment was carried out in such a way as tocompare the number of fish which travelled upstream after the introductionof the fish barrier and that of the fish which travelled upstream after itsremoval. It was also carried out after sunset to increase the effectiveness of the barrier. According to the results of the experiment, the fish blocking effect depending on the difference in illuminance was high and, overall, the blocking rate for bass was lower than that for bluegill. Based on the total size of the experimental population, the blocking rates for bass and bluegill were 96.33% and 99.00%, respectively. Based on the number of fish that travelled upstream, the blocking rates for bass and bluegill were 91.73% and 98.73%, respectively.
The ability of nematodes to manipulate the immune system of their host towards a Th2 and T regulatory responses has been proposed to suppress the inflammatory response. Clinical trials have proposed a useful effect of helminth infections on improvement of inflammatory disorders. In this study, we investigated the immunomodulatory effect of Syphacia obvelata infection to induce intestinal tolerance in C57BL/6 mice. Mice were infected through the cagemates with self-infected BALB/c mice. Four weeks post-infection, expression levels of $IFN-{\gamma}$, $TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-17, and IL-10 were assessed in the supernatant of mesenteric lymph node (MLN) culture. $Foxp3^+Treg$ were measured in MLN cells by flow cytometry. In the S. obvelata-infected group, the percentage of Tregs ($5.2{\pm}0.4$) was significantly higher than the control ($3.6{\pm}0.5$) (P<0.05). The levels of IL-10 ($55.3{\pm}2.2$ vs $35.2{\pm}3.2$), IL-17 ($52.9{\pm}3.8$ vs $41{\pm}1.8$), $IFN-{\gamma}$ ($44.8{\pm}4.8$ vs $22.3{\pm}2.3$) and $TNF-{\alpha}$ ($71.1{\pm}5.8$ vs $60.1{\pm}3.3$) were significantly increased in infected mice compared to the control group (P<0.05). The above results showed the potential effects of S. obvelata to induce intestinal tolerance. Therefore, it seems that S. obvelata may increase the immunological suppressive function in the intestinal tract.
Fuel oxygenates, such as Methyl tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) is additive in gasoline used to reduce air pollution. Gasoline components and fuel additives can leak: form underground storage tanks. MTBE is far more water soluble than gasoline hydrocarbons like BTEX then it travels at essentially the same velocity as groundwater. MTBE in drinking water causes taste and odor problems. Therefore, the purpose of the this study is to examine the ability of ground tire to sorb MTBE in water. The study consisted of running both batch and column tests to determine the sorption capacity, the required sorption equilibration time, and the flow through utilization efficiency of ground tire. The batch test result indicated that ground tire can attain equilibrium sorption capacities about 0.5 mg of MTBE. The result of column test indicate that ground tire has on the 36% utilization rate. Finally, it is clear that ground tire represented an attractive and relatively inexpensive sorption medium for a MTBE. Authors thought that to determine the economic costs of ground tire utilization, the cost to sorb a given mass of contaminant by ground tire will have to be compared to currently accepted sorption media. The cost comparison will also have to include regeneration and disposal cost.

The mushroom Inonotus obliquue (IO) has been traditionally used for the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer in Russia, Poland, and most of Baltic countries. To explore the possibility that IO has chemoprevention effects, we examined whether or not the aqueous extract of IO inhibits HT-29 cell growth and investigated tile mechanism for this effect. Cells were incubated in the presence of increasing concentrations of the aqueous extract of IO. The extract substantially inhibited the viable HT-29 cell number in a dose-dependent manner and inhibited 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine incorporation into DNA of HT-29 cells. Annexin-V staining followed by flow cytometry revealed that the extract induced apoptosis of HT-29 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Western blot analysis of total cell lysates revealed that the extract induced cleavage of caspase-8, -9 and -3 and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase, but did not affect the protein levels of Bax and Bcl-2. In addition, the extract dose-dependently increased the activity of caspase-8, -9 and -3. We have demonstrated that the aqueous extract of IO inhibits cell proliferation and induces apoptosis in HT-29 cells, which may be mediated by its ability to activate the caspase pathway.

Infection of free-living dinoflagellates by endoparasitic dinoflagellates of the genus Amoebophrya are thought to have significant impacts on host population dynamics and have long been proposed to be a potential biological agent for controlling harmful algal bloom (HAB). To understand the impact of Amoebophrya on particular host species, however, it is necessary to quantify aspects the parasites life cycle. Here we used cultures of Amoebophryahost systems from Jinhae Bay, Korea to determine, parasite generation time, and dinospore survival and infectivity. The proportion of host cells infected by Amoebophrya sp. changed sharply from 5% to 87% with increasing dinospore:host inoculation ratios. In the absence of H. triquetra, most free-living dinospores died within 72 hours and their ability to infect host cells decreased remarkably in a day. The relatively short free-living phase of Amoebophrya suggests that the spread of infections is most likely to occur during seasons of high host abundance, as that is when dinospores have the greatest chance of encountering host cells. Infection of host cells inoculated with dinospores during the day was higher than when inoculated during the night, suggesting that infection rates might be related to environmental light conditions and/or diurnal biological rhythm of host species. Total generation times of parasite strains from a thecate dinoflagellate Heterocapsa triquetra were nearly the same regardless of dinospore:host inoculation ratios, representing 54 ± 0.5 h in a 1:1 ratio and 55 ± 1.2 h in a 20:1 ratio. Dinospore production of Amoebophrya sp. infecting Heterocapsa triquetra was estimated to be 125 dinospores per a strain of Amoebophrya sp. There is a growing need to maintain a variety of host-parasite systems in culture and to examine their autecology under various environmental conditions. Such studies would be very helpful in understanding ecological role of these parasites, their overlooked importance in the flow of material and energy in marine ecosystem, and their practical use as biological control agents applied directly to areas affected by HAB.

In this study, wave pressure of short-period gravity waves and tsunami acting on the upright section of the horizontal-slit type caisson placed on the impermeable or permeable seabed, which is a well-known permeable breakwater with a good wave controlling ability, are investigated via numerical simulations. Further, the permeable seabed was modeled as the porous media with porosity of 0.4. Using the numerical results, the effects of the seabed conditions on the wave pressure on the front wall and inside wall of the chamber have been studied. In the numerical simulations, short-period gravity waves and tsunami(solitary wave or bore) with the same amplitude to the gravity wave are considered. A numerical wave tank is used, which is able to consider a gas-liquid two-phase flow in the same calculation zone. Numerical results show that the wave pressure of the tsunami was 3~5 times higher than the short-period gravity waves acting on the front wall and it was 2~4 times higher than the short-period gravity waves acting on the inner wall.
When a hydrofoil ship plies at high speed, there exist possibilities of collision with ocean mammals dwelling near the surface. An active sonar located within the immersed hydrofoil structure that provides the lift for the vessel, can be used for early warning of their presence. The proper functioning of the active sonar system depends on its ability to reject noise and pick up the target signal. In this article, we measured the noise on a hydrofoil of an operating ship with two flush-mounted hydrophones. The measurements were conducted for the purpose of (1) identifying the effect of operating state of machinery likes engine, cooler and generator (2) observing the change of noise depending on the measuring position (3) observing the change of noise with increasing ship speed. To verify our experiment, experiments were performed three times and the measured results are compared with other investigations and they show similarity to each other. The results are analyzed with frequency domain in order to apply to operating active sonar detecting system and focus on high frequency band within sonar's operating frequency region. Through these experiments and analysis, it is expected that we can identify the generated noise around hydrofoil where active sonar is installed and these results lead us to design active sonar that could distinguish target signal from noise more effectively.

In this study, a 2D finite-element analysis, using the SEEP/W program, was carried out to estimate the amount of groundwater flawing into a tunnel, as well as the groundwater tables around wetland areas during and after a tunnel excavation through rock mass. Four sites along the Wonhyo-tunnel in Cheonseong Mountain (Gyeongnam, Korea) were analysed, where the model damain of the tunnel included both wetland and fault zone. The anisotropy of the hydraulic conductivities of the rock mass was calculated using the DFN model, and then used as an input parameter for the cantinuum model. Parametric study on the influencing factors was perofrmed to minimize uncertainties in the hydraulic properties. Moreover, the volumetric water content and hydraulic conductivity functions were applied ta the model to reflect the ability of a medium ta store and transport water under both saturated and unsaturated conditions. The conductivity of fault zone was assumed ta be $10^{-5}m/sec\;or\;10^{-6}m/sec$ and the conductivity of grouting zone was assumed as 1/10, 1/50 or 1/100 of the conductivity of rock mass. Totally $6{\sim}8$ cases of transient flow simulation were peformed at each site. The hydraulic conductivities of fault zone showed a significant influence on groundwater inflow when the fault zone crossed the tunnel. Also, groundwater table around wetland maintained in case that the hydraulic conductivity of grouting zone was reduced ta be less than 1/50 of the hydraulic conductivity of rock mass.
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infects more than 90% of the world's population and has a potential oncogenic nature. A histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, trichostatin A (TSA), has shown potential ability in cancer chemoprevention and treatment, but its effect on EBV-infected Akata cells has not been examined. This study investigated the effect of TSA on the proliferation and apoptosis of the cells. TSA inhibited cell growth and induced cytotoxicity in the EBV infected Akata cells. TSA treatment sensitively induced apoptosis in the cell, which was demonstrated by the increased number of positively stained cells in the TUNEL assay, the migration of many cells to the sub-$G_0/G_1$ phase in flow cytometric analysis, and the ladder formation of genomic DNA. Western blot analysis showed that caspase-dependent pathways are involved in the TSA-induced apoptosis of EBV-infected Akata cells. Overall, this study shows that EBV-infected B lymphomas are quite sensitive to TSA-provoked apoptosis.

When the flood occurs in the alluvial rivers, the rivers adjust to the flood by means of the mechanism of the river bed variations and its morphological changes to pass that safely, the numerical model was developed to simulate the process of the alluvial river bed variation due to flood wave and carried out by the flood routing for flood wave and the sediment routing for river bed variation. The flood wave, river bed variation, and bed material size distribution may be analysed and predicted by this model. The ability of this model to predict the process of river bed response was proved by the application to the reach from Paldang dam to Indogyo site. In view of the flood analysis considering the sediment process, the effects of river bed variation for the flood routing may be negligible because the river bed variation is smaller than the unsteady flow variation during the same period. By the application of this model, it is shown that, in occurring of sequential flood events, the variation of the river bed and bed material size distribution due to flood wave is more dependent on the first flood event than the latter flood events, and that the river bed variation in this reach of the downstream Han river is dependent on the degradation and the coarsening of bed materials.
